Child development and success or failure in the youth labor market
Book description:
The economic status of young people has declined significantly over the past two decades, despite a variety of programs designed to aid new workers in the transition from the classroom to the job market. This ongoing problem has proved difficult to explain. Drawing on comparative data from Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, these papers go beyond examining only employment and wages and explore the effects of family background, education and training, social expectations, and crime on youth employment.
This volume brings together key studies, providing detailed analyses of the difficult economic situation plaguing young workers. Why have demographic changes and additional schooling failed to resolve youth unemployment? How effective have those economic policies been which aimed to improve the labor skills and marketability of young people? And how have youths themselves responded to the deteriorating job market confronting them? These questions form the empirical and organizational bases upon which these studies are founded
Manned Mars mission surface transportation elements
The necessity and advantage of surface transportation was well demonstrated by the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions. Baseline surface transportation elements for further studies are Lunar Rover, Elastic Loop Mobility System, Mobile Laboratory, Airplane, and Rocket Powered Flying Vehicles. These types of surface transportation are discussed. Starting points for further in-depth studies are identified
Coherent State Quantum Key Distribution with Entanglement Witnessing
An entanglement witness approach to quantum coherent state key distribution
and a system for its practical implementation are described. In this approach,
eavesdropping can be detected by a change in sign of either of two witness
functions, an entanglement witness S or an eavesdropping witness W. The effects
of loss and eavesdropping on system operation are evaluated as a function of
distance. Although the eavesdropping witness W does not directly witness
entanglement for the system, its behavior remains related to that of the true
entanglement witness S. Furthermore, W is easier to implement experimentally
than S. W crosses the axis at a finite distance, in a manner reminiscent of
entanglement sudden death. The distance at which this occurs changes measurably
when an eavesdropper is present. The distance dependance of the two witnesses
due to amplitude reduction and due to increased variance resulting from both
ordinary propagation losses and possible eavesdropping activity is provided.
Finally, the information content and secure key rate of a continuous variable
protocol using this witness approach are given
Upgrading of AMTRAN on the datacraft DC 6024
A number of new software extensions and modifications to the AMTRAN system were completed. These modifications include input/output alterations, one-dimensional and two-dimensional array improvements, and disk storage of data enhancements. In order to promote a better understanding of the AMTRAN system software structure, a general description of the AMTRAN modules and their interrelationships was provided. A few sample statements have also been traced through the compilation and execution stages in order to illustrate the flow of system logic. In addition, the previous documentation was updated to reflect these modifications
The why's the limit: curtailing self-enhancement with explanatory introspection
Self-enhancement is linked to psychological gains (e.g., subjective well-being, persistence in adversity) but also to intrapersonal and interpersonal costs (e.g., excessive risk taking, antisocial behavior). Thus, constraints on self-enhancement may sometimes afford intrapersonal and interpersonal advantages. We tested whether explanatory introspection (i.e., generating reasons for why one might or might not possess personality traits) constitutes one such constraint. Experiment 1 demonstrated that explanatory introspection curtails self-enhancement. Experiment 2 clarified that the underlying mechanism must (a) involve explanatory questioning rather than descriptive imagining, (b) invoke the self rather than another person, and (c) feature written expression rather than unaided contemplation. Finally, Experiment 3 obtained evidence that an increase in uncertainty about oneself mediates the effect
