Dynamical experiments on models of colliding disk galaxies
Collisions between galaxies can induce large morphological changes in the participants and, in the case of colliding disk galaxies, bridges and tails are often formed. Observations of such systems indicate a wide variation in color (see Larson and Tinsley, 1978) and that some of the particpants are experiencing enhanced rates of star formation, especially in their central regions (Bushouse 1986, 1987; Kennicutt et al., 1987, Bushouse, Lamb, and Werner, 1988). Here the authors describe progress made in understanding some of the dynamics of interacting galaxies using N-body stellar dynamical computer experiments, with the goal of extending these models to include a hydrodynamical treatment of the gas so that a better understanding of globally enhanced star formation will eventually be forthcoming. It was concluded that close interactions between galaxies can produce large perturbations in both density and velocity fields. The authors measured, via computational experiments that represent a galaxy's stars, average radial velocity flows as large as 100 km/sec and 400 percent density increases. These can occur in rings that move outwards through the disk of a galaxy, in roughly homologous inflows toward the nucleus, and in off center, non-axisymmetric regions. Here the authors illustrate where the gas is likely to flow during the early stages of interaction and in future work they plan to investigate the fate of the gas more realistically by using an N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics code to model both the stellar and gaseous components of a disk galaxy during a collision. Specifically, they will determine the locations of enhanced gas density and the strength and location of shock fronts that form during the interaction
Detection of hydrogen by the extraordinary Hall effect in CoPd alloys
Effect of hydrogen adsorption on the extraordinary Hall phenomenon (EHE) in
ferromagnetic CoPd films is studied as a function of composition, thickness,
substrate and hydrogen concentration in atmosphere. Adsorption of hydrogen adds
a positive term in the extraordinary Hall effect coefficient and modifies the
perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with the respective changes in coercivity and
remanence of hysteresis loops. Hydrogen sensitive compositions are within the
Co concentration range 20% < x < 50% with the strongest response near the EHE
polarity reversal point x_0 ~ 38%. Depending on the film composition and field
of operation the EHE response of CoPd to low concentration hydrogen can reach
hundreds percent, which makes the method and the material attractive for
hydrogen sensing.Comment: 11 figure
Electromagnetically Induced Transparency from a Single Atom in Free Space
We report an absorption spectroscopy experiment and the observation of
electromagnetically induced transparency from a single trapped atom. We focus a
weak and narrowband Gaussian light beam onto an optically cooled Barium ion
using a high numerical aperture lens. Extinction of this beam is observed with
measured values of up to 1.3 %. We demonstrate electromagnetically induced
transparency of the ion by tuning a strong control beam over a two-photon
resonance in a three-level lambda-type system. The probe beam extinction is
inhibited by more than 75 % due to population trapping.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Quantum interference and non-locality of independent photons from disparate sources
We quantitatively investigate the non-classicality and non-locality of a
whole new class of mixed disparate quantum and semiquantum photon sources at
the quantum-classical boundary. The latter include photon added thermal and
photon added coherent sources, experimentally investigated recently by Zavatta
et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 140406 (2009)]. The key quantity in our
investigations is the visibility of the corresponding photon-photon correlation
function. We present explicit results on the violations of the Cauchy-Schwarz
inequality - which is a measure of nonclassicality - as well as of Bell-type

Development of thermally stable phosphonitrile elastomers for advanced aerospace structures
Both high and low molecular weight, curable poly(fluoroalkoxy phosphazene) terpolymers were prepared. These terpolymers resulted from reaction of (Cl2PNn) polymer with alkoxides derived from CF3CH2OH and C3F7CH2OH, and an alkoxide derived from CH3CH(OH)C2H4OH. The terpolymers were crosslinked with polyisocyanates at room temperature. High molecular weight materials were converted into isocyanate prepolymers which as films underwent moisture cures at room temperature. Prepolymer solutions were stable for several days, and showed good adhesion. Also the effects of polymerization of (Cl2PN)3 were studied. Purified octachlorophosphazene, thiocyanate salts, or hydrogen chloride were employed in attempts to decrease molecular weight. Hydrogen chloride was found to be a good agent for preparation of low molecular weight poly(dichloro phosphazene)
The MUCHFUSS photometric campaign
Hot subdwarfs (sdO/Bs) are the helium-burning cores of red giants, which lost
almost all of their hydrogen envelopes. This mass loss is often triggered by
common envelope interactions with close stellar or even substellar companions.
Cool companions like late-type stars or brown dwarfs are detectable via
characteristic light curve variations like reflection effects and often also
eclipses. To search for such objects we obtained multi-band light curves of 26
close sdO/B binary candidates from the MUCHFUSS project with the BUSCA
instrument. We discovered a new eclipsing reflection effect system
(~d) with a low-mass M dwarf companion ().
Three more reflection effect binaries found in the course of the campaign were
already published, two of them are eclipsing systems, in one system only
showing the reflection effect but no eclipses the sdB primary is found to be
pulsating. Amongst the targets without reflection effect a new long-period sdB
pulsator was discovered and irregular light variations were found in two sdO
stars. The found light variations allowed us to constrain the fraction of
reflection effect binaries and the substellar companion fraction around sdB
stars. The minimum fraction of reflection effect systems amongst the close sdB
binaries might be greater than 15\% and the fraction of close substellar
companions in sdB binaries might be as high as . This would result in a
close substellar companion fraction to sdB stars of about 3\%. This fraction is
much higher than the fraction of brown dwarfs around possible progenitor
systems, which are solar-type stars with substellar companions around 1 AU, as
well as close binary white dwarfs with brown dwarf companions. This might be a
hint that common envelope interactions with substellar objects are
preferentially followed by a hot subdwarf phase.Comment: accepted for A&

The continually increasing number of documents produced each year
necessitates ever improving information processing methods for searching,
retrieving, and organizing text. Central to these information processing
methods is document classification, which has become an important application
for supervised learning. Recently the performance of these traditional
classifiers has degraded as the number of documents has increased. This is
because along with this growth in the number of documents has come an increase
in the number of categories. This paper approaches this problem differently
from current document classification methods that view the problem as
multi-class classification. Instead we perform hierarchical classification
using an approach we call Hierarchical Deep Learning for Text classification
(HDLTex). HDLTex employs stacks of deep learning architectures to provide
specialized understanding at each level of the document hierarchy.Comment: ICMLA 201
Current state of antimicrobial stewardship in children’s hospital emergency departments
BACKGROUND Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) effectively optimize antibiotic use for inpatients; however, the extent of emergency department (ED) involvement in ASPs has not been described. OBJECTIVE To determine current ED involvement in children's hospital ASPs and to assess beliefs and preferred methods of implementation for ED-based ASPs. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 37 children's hospitals participating in the Sharing Antimicrobial Resistance Practices collaboration was conducted. Surveys were distributed to ASP leaders and ED medical directors at each institution. Items assessed included beliefs regarding ED antibiotic prescribing, ED prescribing resources, ASP methods used in the ED such as clinical decision support and clinical care guidelines, ED participation in ASP activities, and preferred methods for ED-based ASP implementation. RESULTS A total of 36 ASP leaders (97.3%) and 32 ED directors (86.5%) responded; the overall response rate was 91.9%. Most ASP leaders (97.8%) and ED directors (93.7%) agreed that creation of ED-based ASPs was necessary. ED resources for antibiotic prescribing were obtained via the Internet or electronic health records (EHRs) for 29 hospitals (81.3%). The main ASP activities for the ED included production of antibiograms (77.8%) and creation of clinical care guidelines for pneumonia (83.3%). The ED was represented on 3 hospital ASP committees (8.3%). No hospital ASPs actively monitored outpatient ED prescribing. Most ASP leaders (77.8%) and ED directors (81.3%) preferred implementation of ED-based ASPs using clinical decision support integrated into the EHR. CONCLUSIONS Although ED involvement in ASPs is limited, both ASP and ED leaders believe that ED-based ASPs are necessary. Development and application of an antibiotic spectrum index for benchmarking antibiotic selection patterns across hospitals
Standard metrics for antimicrobial use consider volume but not spectrum of antimicrobial prescribing. We developed an antibiotic spectrum index (ASI) to classify commonly used antibiotics based on activity against important pathogens. Variability in antifungal and antiviral use in hospitalized children
We analyzed antifungal and antiviral prescribing among high-risk children across freestanding children’s hospitals. Antifungal and antiviral days of therapy varied across hospitals.
