Dislocation dipoles and the nucleation of cracks in silicon nanopillars
To understand the brittle to ductile transtion at small scale in silicon nanopillars, plastic deformation of silicon nanopillars was investigated by atomistic simulations. Perfect dislocations were found to be nucleated from surfaces and nano cavities were evidenced resulting from dislocation dipoles annihilation. The formation of such cavities is consistent with previous atomistic calculations showing that the annihilation of dislocation vacancy dipole of perfect shuffle dislocations is associated to the formation of vacancy clusters in silicon and diamond [1]. In nanopillars such cavities contribute to the nucleation of cracks [2]. This mechanism of crack nucleation is relevant to single slip deformation and does not require any interactions between dislocations issued from intersecting glide planes as usually postulated for crack nucleation [3].
Incipient dipoles were also found nucleated on the glide plane swept by dislocations. These incipient dipoles result from bond flips and are similar to the StoneâWales defects in graphene [4]. These defects could be similar and related to the âdislocations trailsâ found in the glide plane of dislocations in other deformation conditions, a long time and rather unsolved problem in silicon (see for example [5]). Under the applied stress those incipient dipoles appear to act as new nucleation centers for dislocations located in the glide plane. Those dislocations contribute to dislocation interactions in parallel slip planes and to the formation of nano cracks following the described above mechanism
Evidence supporting the use of peptides and peptidomimetics as potential SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) therapeutics
© 2020 Newlands Press. During a disease outbreak/pandemic situation such as COVID-19, researchers are in a prime position to identify and develop peptide-based therapies, which could be more rapidly and cost-effectively advanced into a clinical setting. One drawback of natural peptide drugs, however, is their proteolytic instability; peptidomimetics can help to overcome this caveat. In this review, we summarize peptide and peptide-based therapeutics that target one main entry pathway of SARS-CoV-2, which involves the host ACE2 receptor and viral spike (S) protein interaction. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages of peptidomimetics and other potential targets that have been studied using peptide-based therapeutics for COVID-19
Concurrent -vector fields and energy beta-change
The present paper deals with an \emph{intrinsic} investigation of the notion
of a concurrent -vector field on the pullback bundle of a Finsler manifold
. The effect of the existence of a concurrent -vector field on some
important special Finsler spaces is studied. An intrinsic investigation of a
particular -change, namely the energy -change
($\widetilde{L}^{2}(x,y)=L^{2}(x,y)+ B^{2}(x,y) with \
B:=g(\bar{\zeta},\bar{\eta})\bar{\zeta} \pi\Gamma\widetilde{\Gamma}\beta$-change of the fundamental linear connection in Finsler geometry: the
Cartan connection, the Berwald connection, the Chern connection and the
Hashiguchi connection. Moreover, the change of their curvature tensors is
concluded.
It should be pointed out that the present work is formulated in a prospective
modern coordinate-free form.Comment: 27 pages, LaTex file, Some typographical errors corrected, Some

Designing cost-sharing methods for Bayesian games
We study the design of cost-sharing protocols for two fundamental resource allocation problems, the Set Cover and the Steiner Tree Problem, under environments of incomplete information (Bayesian model). Our objective is to design protocols where the worst-case Bayesian Nash equilibria, have low cost, i.e. the Bayesian Price of Anarchy (PoA) is minimized. Although budget balance is a very natural requirement, it puts considerable restrictions on the design space, resulting in high PoA. We propose an alternative, relaxed requirement called budget balance in the equilibrium (BBiE).We show an interesting connection between algorithms for Oblivious Stochastic optimization problems and cost-sharing design with low PoA. We exploit this connection for both problems and we enforce approximate solutions of the stochastic problem, as Bayesian Nash equilibria, with the same guarantees on the PoA. More interestingly, we show how to obtain the same bounds on the PoA, by using anonymous posted prices which are desirable because they are easy to implement and, as we show, induce dominant strategies for the players
Height Fluctuations and Intermittency of Films by Atomic Force Microscopy
The spatial scaling law and intermittency of the surface roughness
by atomic force microscopy has been investigated. The intermittency of the
height fluctuations has been checked by two different methods, first, by
measuring scaling exponent of q-th moment of height-difference fluctuations
i.e. and the second, by defining generating
function and generalized multi-fractal dimension . These methods
predict that there is no intermittency in the height fluctuations. The observed
roughness and dynamical exponents can be explained by the numerical simulation
on the basis of forced Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation.Comment: 6 pages (two columns), 11 eps. figures, late
Self-assembly in solution of a reversible comb-shaped supramolecular polymer
We report a single step synthesis of a polyisobutene with a bis-urea moiety
in the middle of the chain. In low polarity solvents, this polymer
self-assembles by hydrogen bonding to form a combshaped polymer with a central
hydrogen bonded backbone and polyisobutene arms. The comb backbone can be
reversibly broken, and consequently, its length can be tuned by changing the
solvent, the concentration or the temperature. Moreover, we have proved that
the bulkiness of the side-chains have a strong influence on both the
self-assembly pattern and the length of the backbone. Finally, the density of
arms can be reduced, by simply mixing with a low molar mass bis-urea
Assessing L2 Argumentation in the UAE Context
In this rapidly changing world, argumentation and critical thinking skills are undeniably crucial for new generations of Emirati students. These skills lay the groundwork for a competitive economy, which is a priority for the UAE in its Vision 2021. Specifically, todayâs modern workplaces require workers to evaluate different propositions and develop their own after weighing up these various ideas, and thus the ability to defend arguments in English has become increasingly important for UAE university students in English-medium universities as well as their future professional contexts. Despite this importance, research regarding argumentation and the related critical thinking skills is sorely lacking in the UAE. This chapter delineates how written argumentation was assessed in a timed essay in a mandatory argumentative writing course taken by university freshmen in a government university in the UAE, and how the feedback gleaned from this common assessment was mapped to the teaching curriculum to shed light on the teaching effectiveness and to provide directions for future teaching
A brief comparison of Simon and Simeck
Abstract. Simeck is a new lightweight block cipher design based on combining the Simon and Speck block cipher. While the design allows a smaller and more efficient hardware implementation, its security margins are not well understood. The lack of design rationals of its predecessors further leaves some uncertainty on the security of Simeck. In this work we give a short analysis of the impact of the design changes by comparing the lower bounds for differential and linear characteristics with Simon. We also give a comparison of the effort of finding those bounds, which surprisingly is significant less for Simeck while covering a larger number of rounds. Furthermore, we provide new differentials for Simeck which can cover more rounds compared to previous results on Simon. Based on this we mount key recovery attacks on 19/26/33 rounds of Simeck32/48/64, which also give insights on the reduced key guessing effort due to the different set of rotation constants
Anodal block permits directional vagus nerve stimulation
© 2020, The Author(s). Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a bioelectronic therapy for disorders of the brain and peripheral organs, and a tool to study the physiology of autonomic circuits. Selective activation of afferent or efferent vagal fibers can maximize efficacy and minimize off-target effects of VNS. Anodal block (ABL) has been used to achieve directional fiber activation in nerve stimulation. However, evidence for directional VNS with ABL has been scarce and inconsistent, and it is unknown whether ABL permits directional fiber activation with respect to functional effects of VNS. Through a series of vagotomies, we established physiological markers for afferent and efferent fiber activation by VNS: stimulus-elicited change in breathing rate (ÎBR) and heart rate (ÎHR), respectively. Bipolar VNS trains of both polarities elicited mixed ÎHR and ÎBR responses. Cathode cephalad polarity caused an afferent pattern of responses (relatively stronger ÎBR) whereas cathode caudad caused an efferent pattern (stronger ÎHR). Additionally, left VNS elicited a greater afferent and right VNS a greater efferent response. By analyzing stimulus-evoked compound nerve potentials, we confirmed that such polarity differences in functional responses to VNS can be explained by ABL of A- and B-fiber activation. We conclude that ABL is a mechanism that can be leveraged for directional VNS
Natural Products Chemistry and Taxonomy of the Marine Cyanobacterium Blennothrix cantharidosmum
A Papua New Guinea field collection of the marine cyanobacterium Blennothrix cantharidosmum was investigated for its cytotoxic constituents. Bioassay-guided isolation defined the cytotoxic components as the known compounds lyngbyastatins 1 and 3. However, six new acyl proline derivatives, tumonoic acids DâI, plus the known tumonoic acid A were also isolated. Their planar structures were defined from NMR and MS data, while their stereostructures followed from a series of chiral chromatographies, degradation sequences, and synthetic approaches. The new compounds were tested in an array of assays, but showed only modest antimalarial and inhibition of quorum sensing activities. Nevertheless, these are the first natural products to be reported from this genus, and this inspired a detailed morphologic and 16S rDNA-based phylogenetic analysis of the producing organism
