    Potential Activity of Albino Grifola frondosa Mushroom Extract against Biofilm of Meticillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus

    Mushroom extracts are a rich source of natural compounds with antimicrobial properties, which are able to prevent, to some extent, the growth of foodborne pathogens. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of extracts from albino Grifola frondosa (GF), commonly known as maitake, to inhibit the growth of some bacteria and the biofilm production by Staphylococcus aureus. We obtained not only a significant reduction of OD score between biofilm and biofilm plus albino G. frondosa extract group, but also a reduction of category of biofilm. In addition, we observed a significant presence of isolates with strong category for the biofilm group and a significant presence of isolates with absent category for the biofilm plus albino G. frondosa extract group. These results confirm that the use of albino G. frondosa extract reduces in significant way the presence of biofilm. Our results suggest and confirm that albino G. frondosa extracts could be employed as functional food and could be used as a natural additive for food process control and food safety

    Pre-Stimulus Activity Predicts the Winner of Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up Attentional Selection

    Our ability to process visual information is fundamentally limited. This leads to competition between sensory information that is relevant for top-down goals and sensory information that is perceptually salient, but task-irrelevant. The aim of the present study was to identify, from EEG recordings, pre-stimulus and pre-saccadic neural activity that could predict whether top-down or bottom-up processes would win the competition for attention on a trial-by-trial basis. We employed a visual search paradigm in which a lateralized low contrast target appeared alone, or with a low (i.e., non-salient) or high contrast (i.e., salient) distractor. Trials with a salient distractor were of primary interest due to the strong competition between top-down knowledge and bottom-up attentional capture. Our results demonstrated that 1) in the 1-sec pre-stimulus interval, frontal alpha (8–12 Hz) activity was higher on trials where the salient distractor captured attention and the first saccade (bottom-up win); and 2) there was a transient pre-saccadic increase in posterior-parietal alpha (7–8 Hz) activity on trials where the first saccade went to the target (top-down win). We propose that the high frontal alpha reflects a disengagement of attentional control whereas the transient posterior alpha time-locked to the saccade indicates sensory inhibition of the salient distractor and suppression of bottom-up oculomotor capture

    Chronological Changes in Sagittal Femoral Bowing after Primary Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Comparative 3D CT Study

    Little is known about dynamic changes of femoral anatomy after total hip arthroplasty (THA), in particular about sagittal femoral bowing (SFB). A 3D CT study was designed to evaluate the chronological changes of SFB after cementless femoral stem implantation for primary THA. Ten patients who underwent unilateral primary THA with a cementless femoral stem, with 2 consecutive CT scans (extending from the fourth lumbar vertebra to the tibial plateaus), performed before THA and at least 3 years after THA, were enrolled. The 3D models of femurs were created using image segmentation software. Using the two CT scans, SFB values of the proximal and middle thirds were calculated on the replaced and untreated sides by two different observers. Eight anatomical stems and two conical stems were involved. The post-operative CT was performed at an average follow-up of 6.5 years after THA (range: 3-12.5). The measurements performed by the two observers did not differ in the proximal and middle regions. A significant difference between the pre-operative and post-operative SFB compared to the untreated side was found in the proximal femur segment (p = 0.004).     Mobility and potential bioavailability of antimony in contaminated soils: Short-term impact on microbial community and soil biochemical functioning

    Antimony (Sb) and its compounds are emerging priority pollutants which pose a serious threat to the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term fate of antimonate added to different soils (S1 and S2) with respect to its mobility and impact on soil microbial communities and soil biochemical functioning. To this end, S1 (sandy clay loam, pH 8.2) and S2 (loamy coarse sand, pH 4.9) soils were spiked with 100 and 1000 mg Sb(V) kg−1 soil and left in contact for three months. Sequential extractions carried out after this contact time indicated a higher percentage of labile antimony in the Sb-spiked S1 soils than S2 (e.g. ~13 and 4% in S1 and S2 treated with 1000 mg Sb(V) kg−1 respectively), while the opposite was found for residual (hardly bioavailable) Sb. Also, a reduced number of culturable heterotrophic bacteria was recorded in Sb-spiked S1 soil (compared to the unpolluted S1), while an increased one was found in S2. Heterotrophic fungi followed the opposite trend. Actinomycetes and heat-resistant aerobic bacterial spores showed a variable trend depending on the soil type and Sb(V) treatment. The Biolog community level physiological profile indicated a reduced metabolic activity potential of microbial communities from the Sb-spiked S1 soils (e.g. <50% for Sb-1000 compared to the unpolluted S1), while an increase was recorded for those extracted from the Sb-spiked S2 soils (e.g. >2-fold for Sb-1000). The soil dehydrogenase activity followed the same trend. High-throughput 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing analysis revealed that Sb did not influence the bacterial α-diversity in both soils, while significantly affected the composition of the respective soil bacterial communities. Several phyla (e.g. Nitrosospira Nitrososphaeraceae, Adheribacter) were found positively correlated with the concentration of water-soluble Sb in soil. Overall, the results obtained suggest that the risk assessment in soils polluted with antimony should be a priority especially for alkaline soils where the high mobility of the anionic Sb(OH)6ˉ species can pose, at least in the short-term, a serious threat for soil microbial abundance, diversity and functionality, soil fertility and eventually human health. © 2020 Elsevier Inc
