Placement of a temporary pacemaker electrode through a persistent left superior vena cava
Perioperative temporary pacing was needed in a patient with congenital skeletal malformations and a cardiac conduction disturbance with incomplete trifascicular block. We report the successful placement of the pacemaker electrode through a persistent left superior vena cava (SVC
Transport properties of single atoms
We present a systematic study of the ballistic electron conductance through
sp and 3d transition metal atoms attached to copper and palladium crystalline
electrodes. We employ the 'ab initio' screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker Green's
function method to calculate the electronic structure of nanocontacts while the
ballistic transmission and conductance eigenchannels were obtained by means of
the Kubo approach as formulated by Baranger and Stone. We demonstrate that the
conductance of the systems is mainly determined by the electronic properties of
the atom bridging the macroscopic leads. We classify the conducting
eigenchannels according to the atomic orbitals of the contact atom and the
irreducible representations of the symmetry point group of the system that
leads to the microscopic understanding of the conductance. We show that if
impurity resonances in the density of states of the contact atom appear at the
Fermi energy, additional channels of appropriate symmetry could open. On the
other hand the transmission of the existing channels could be blocked by
impurity scattering.Comment: RevTEX4, 9 pages, 9 figure
Dynamical Coulomb blockade of multiple Andreev reflections
We analyze the dynamical Coulomb blockade of multiple Andreev reflections
(MAR) in a superconducting quantum point contact coupled to a macroscopic
impedance. We find that at very low transmission the blockade scales as
with , where is the bias voltage and is the
superconducting gap, as it would correspond to the occurrence of "shots" of
charge . For higher transmission the blockade is reduced both due to Pauli
principle and to elastic renormalization of the MAR probability, and for
certain voltage regions it may even become an "antiblockade", i.e. the current
is enhanced due to the coupling with the electromagnetic environment.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Test report of the melt spreading tests ECOKATS-V1 and ECOKATS-1. Contract FIKS - CT1999 - 0003. Ex-vessel core melt stabilization research
Test and simulation results of LIVE-L4 + LIVE-L5L. (KIT Scientific Reports ; 7593)
The objective of the LIVE program is to study the core melt phenomena during the late phase of core melt progression in the RPV both experimentally in large-scale 3D geometry and with CFD simulation. LIVE-L4 and LIVE-L5L experiments investigate the transient and steady state behaviors of the molten pool and the crust at the melt/vessel wall interface influenced by the several melt relocation numbers and different heat generation rate during external cooling. The melt pool behaviour and crust thickness in L4 test are calculated by CONV-code
Results of the LIVE-L3A Experiment. (KIT Scientific Reports ; 7542)
The sequence of a postulated core melt down accident in the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) of a pressurised water reactor (PWR) involves a large number of complex physical and chemical phenomena. The main objective of the LIVE program is to study the core melt phe-nomena during the late phase of core melt progression in the RPV both experimentally in large-scale 3D geometry in supporting separate-effects tests and analytically using CFD codes in order to provide a reasonable estimate of the remaining uncertainty band under the aspect of safety assessment.
The main objective of the LIVE-L3A experiment was to investigate the behaviour of the mol-ten pool and the formation of the crust at the melt/vessel wall interface influenced by the melt relocation position and initial cooling conditions. The test conditions in the LIVE- L3A test were similar to the LIVE-L3 test except the initial cooling conditions. In both tests the melt was poured near to the vessel wall. In the LIVE-L3 test the vessel was initially cooled by air and then by water; in the LIVE-L3A test the vessel was cooled by water already at the start of the experiment.
The information obtained in the test includes horizontal and vertical heat flux distribution through the RPV wall, crust growth velocity and dependence of the crust properties on the crust growth velocity and cooling conditions. Supporting post-test analysis contributes to the characterization of solidification processes of binary non-eutectic melts. The results of the LIVE-L3 and LIVE-L3A tests are compared in order to characterize the impact of transient cooling condition on the crust solidification characteristics and melt pool behaviour including interface temperature, time to reach thermal hydraulic steady-state and the steady-state heat flux distribution.
The report summarizes the objectives of the LIVE program and presents the main results obtained in the LIVE-L3A test compared to the LIVE-L3 test
Inelastic Interaction Corrections and Universal Relations for Full Counting Statistics
We analyze in detail the interaction correction to Full Counting Statistics
(FCS) of electron transfer in a quantum contact originating from the
electromagnetic environment surrounding the contact. The correction can be
presented as a sum of two terms, corresponding to elastic/inelastic electron
transfer. Here we primarily focus on the inelastic correction.
For our analysis, it is important to understand more general -- universal --
relations imposed on FCS only by quantum mechanics and statistics with no
regard for a concrete realization of a contact. So we derive and analyze these
relations. We reveal that for FCS the universal relations can be presented in a
form of detailed balance. We also present several useful formulas for the
cumulants.
To facilitate the experimental observation of the effect, we evaluate
cumulants of FCS at finite voltage and temperature. Several analytical results
obtained are supplemented by numerical calculations for the first three
cumulants at various transmission eigenvalues.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
