    The Globular Cluster System of the Virgo Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy VCC 1087

    We have analysed the globular cluster (GC) system of the nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy VCC 1087 in the Virgo cluster, based on Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and archival HST/ACS imaging. We estimate VCC 1087 hosts a total population of 77+/-19 GCs, which corresponds to a relatively high V-band specific frequency of 5.8+/-1.4. The g-z color distribution of the GCs shows a blue (metal-poor) peak with a tail of redder (metal-rich) clusters similar in color to those seen in luminous ellipticals. Spectroscopy of a subsample of 12 GCs suggests that the GC system is old and coeval (~10 Gyr), with a fairly broad metallicity distribution (-1.8<[m/H]<-0.8). In contrast, an integrated spectrum of the underlying galaxy starlight reveals that its optical luminosity is dominated by metal-rich, intermediate-aged stars. Radial velocities of the GCs suggest rotation close to the major axis of the galaxy, and this rotation is dynamically significant with (v/sigma)^* >1. A compilation of the kinematics of the GC systems of 9 early-type galaxies shows surprising diversity in the v/sigma parameter for GC systems. In this context, the GC system of VCC 1087 exhibits the most significant rotation to velocity dispersion signature. Modeling the velocity dispersion profile of the GCs and galaxy stars suggest fairly constant mass-to-light ratios of ~3 out to 6.5 kpc. The present observations can entertain both baryonic and non-baryonic solutions, and GC velocities at larger radii would be most valuable with regard to this issue. We discuss the evolution of VCC 1087 in terms of the galaxy ``harassment'' scenario, and conclude that this galaxy may well be the remains of a faded, tidally perturbed Sc spiral [abridged].Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, to appear in the A

    Galaxy properties from J-PAS narrow-band photometry

    We study the consistency of the physical properties of galaxies retrieved from SED-fitting as a function of spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Using a selection of physically motivated star formation histories, we set up a control sample of mock galaxy spectra representing observations of the local universe in high-resolution spectroscopy, and in 56 narrow-band and 5 broad-band photometry. We fit the SEDs at these spectral resolutions and compute their corresponding the stellar mass, the mass- and luminosity-weighted age and metallicity, and the dust extinction. We study the biases, correlations, and degeneracies affecting the retrieved parameters and explore the r\^ole of the spectral resolution and the SNR in regulating these degeneracies. We find that narrow-band photometry and spectroscopy yield similar trends in the physical properties derived, the former being considerably more precise. Using a galaxy sample from the SDSS, we compare more realistically the results obtained from high-resolution and narrow-band SEDs (synthesized from the same SDSS spectra) following the same spectral fitting procedures. We use results from the literature as a benchmark to our spectroscopic estimates and show that the prior PDFs, commonly adopted in parametric methods, may introduce biases not accounted for in a Bayesian framework. We conclude that narrow-band photometry yields the same trend in the age-metallicity relation in the literature, provided it is affected by the same biases as spectroscopy; albeit the precision achieved with the latter is generally twice as large as with the narrow-band, at SNR values typical of the different kinds of data.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures.     Evidence for intermediate-age stellar populations in early-type galaxies from K-band spectroscopy

    The study of stellar populations in early-type galaxies in different environments is a powerful tool for constraining their star formation histories. This study has been traditionally restricted to the optical range, where dwarfs around the turn-off and stars at the base of the RGB dominate the integrated light at all ages. The near-infrared spectral range is especially interesting since in the presence of an intermediate-age population, AGB stars are the main contributors. In this letter, we measure the near-infrared indices NaI and DCO_{\rm CO} for a sample of 12 early-type galaxies in low density environments and compare them with the Fornax galaxy sample presented by Silva et al. (2008). The analysis of these indices in combination with Lick/IDS indices in the optical range reveals i) the NaI index is a metallicity indicator as good as C4668 in the optical range, and ii) DCO_{\rm CO} is a tracer of intermediate-age stellar populations. We find that low-mass galaxies in low density environments show higher NaI and DCO_{\rm CO} than those located in Fornax cluster, which points towards a late stage of star formation for the galaxies in less dense environments, in agreement with results from other studies using independent methods.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

    Using spectroscopic data to disentangle stellar population properties

    It is well known that, when analyzed in the light of current synthesis model predictions, variations in the physical properties of single stellar populations (e.g. age, metallicity, initial mass function, element abundance ratios) may have a similar effect in their integrated spectral energy distributions. The confusion is even worsened when more realistic scenarios, i.e. composite star formation histories, are considered. This is, in fact, one of the major problems when facing the study of stellar populations in star clusters and galaxies. Typically, the observational efforts have aimed to find the most appropriate spectroscopic indicators in order to avoid, as far as possible, degeneracies in the parameter space. However, from a practical point of view, the most suited observables are not, necessarily, those that provide more orthogonality in that parameter space, but those that give the best balance between parameter degeneracy and sensitivity to signal-to-noise ratio per Angstrom, S/N(Angstrom). In order to achieve the minimum combined total error in the derived physical parameters, this work discusses how the functional dependence of typical line-strength indices and colors on S/N(Angstrom) allows to define a suitability parameter which helps to obtain more realistic combinations of spectroscopic data. As an example, we discuss in more detail the problem of breaking the well known age-metallicity degeneracy in relatively old stellar populations, comparing the suitability of different spectroscopic diagrams for a simple stellar population of solar metallicity and of 12 Gyr in age

    Old Globular Clusters Masquerading as Young in NGC 4365?

    High signal-to-noise, low-resolution spectra have been obtained for 22 globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 4365. Some of these were selected as probable representatives of an intermediate-age (2-5 Gyr), extremely metal-rich GC subpopulation. The presence of such a subpopulation had been inferred from the unusual optical and near-IR color distributions of GCs in this otherwise typical Virgo elliptical galaxy. However, ages derived from Lick indices are consistent with uniformly old mean ages for all GCs in our sample. The metallicities of the clusters show some evidence for a trimodal distribution. The most metal-poor and metal-rich peaks are consistent with the values expected for an elliptical galaxy of this luminosity, but there appears to be an additional, intermediate-metallicity peak lying between them. New Hubble Space Telescope photometry is consistent with this result. A plausible scenario is that in earlier data these three peaks merged into a single broad distribution. Our results suggest that it is difficult to identify intermediate-age GC subpopulations solely with photometry, even when both optical and near-infrared colors are used.Comment: 30 pages, including 11 figures.     A new stellar library in the region of the CO index at 2.3 μ\mum. New index definition and empirical fitting functions

    Context: The analysis of unresolved stellar populations demands evolutionary synthesis models with realistic physical ingredients and extended wavelength coverage. Aims: To obtain a quantitative description of the first CO bandhead at 2.3 μ\mum, to allow stellar population models to provide improved predictions in this wavelength range. Methods: We have observed a new stellar library with a better coverage of the stellar atmospheric parameter space than preceding works. We have performed a detailed analysis of the robustness of previous CO index definitions with spectral resolution, wavelength calibration, signal-to-noise ratio, and flux calibration. Results: We define a new line-strength index for the first CO bandhead at 2.3 μ\mum, DCO_{\rm CO}, better suited for stellar population studies than previous index definitions. We compute empirical fitting functions for the CO feature as a function of the stellar parameters (Teff_{\rm eff}, logg\log g and [Fe/H]), showing a detailed quantitative metallicity dependence.Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A.     JPCam: A 1.2Gpixel camera for the J-PAS survey

    JPCam is a 14-CCD mosaic camera, using the new e2v 9k-by-9k 10microm-pixel 16-channel detectors, to be deployed on a dedicated 2.55m wide-field telescope at the OAJ (Observatorio Astrofisico de Javalambre) in Aragon, Spain. The camera is designed to perform a Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) survey of the northern sky. The J-PAS survey strategy will use 54 relatively narrow-band (~13.8nm) filters equi-spaced between 370 and 920nm plus 3 broad-band filters to achieve unprecedented photometric red-shift accuracies for faint galaxies over ~8000 square degrees of sky. The cryostat, detector mosaic and read electronics is being supplied by e2v under contract to J-PAS while the mechanical structure, housing the shutter and filter assembly, is being designed and constructed by a Brazilian consortium led by INPE (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais). Four sets of 14 filters are placed in the ambient environment, just above the dewar window but directly in line with the detectors, leading to a mosaic having ~10mm gaps between each CCD. The massive 500mm aperture shutter is expected to be supplied by the Argelander-Institut fur Astronomie, Bonn. We will present an overview of JPCam, from the filter configuration through to the CCD mosaic camera.     Bile acid synthesis precursors in subjects with genetic hypercholesterolemia negative for LDLR/APOB/PCSK9/APOE mutations. Association with lipids and carotid atherosclerosis

    Some oxysterols are precursors of bile acid synthesis and play an important role in cholesterol homeostasis. However, if they are involved in the pathogeny of genetic hypercholesterolemia has not been previously explored. We have studied non-cholesterol sterol markers of cholesterol synthesis (lanosterol and desmosterol) and oxysterols (7a-hydroxy-4-cholesten-3-one, 24S-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol) in 200 affected subjects with primary hypercholesterolemia of genetic origin, negative for mutations in LDLR, APOB, PCSK9 and APOE genes (non-FH GH) and 100 normolipemic controls. All studied oxysterols and cholesterol synthesis markers were significantly higher in affected subjects than controls (P < 0.001). Ratios of oxysterols to total cholesterol were higher in non-FH GH than in controls, although only 24S-hydroxycholesterol showed statistical significance (P < 0.001). Cholesterol synthesis markers had a positive correlation with BMI, triglycerides, cholesterol and apoB in control population. However, these correlations disappeared in non-FH GH with the exception of a weak positive correlation for non-HDL cholesterol and apoB. The same pattern was observed for oxysterols with high positive correlation in controls and absence of correlation for non-FH GH, except non-HDL cholesterol for 24S-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol and apoB for 27-hydroxycholesterol. All non-cholesterol sterols had positive correlation among them in patients and in controls. A total of 65 (32.5%) and 35 (17.5%) affected subjects presented values of oxysterols ratios to total cholesterol above the 95th percentile of the normal distribution (24S-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol, respectively). Those patients with the highest levels of 24S-hydroxycholesterol associated an increase in the carotid intima media thickness. These results suggest that bile acid metabolism is affected in some patients with primary hypercholesterolemia of genetic origin, negative for mutations in the candidate genes, and may confer a higher cardiovascular risk. Our results confirm that cholesterol synthesis overproduction is a primary defect in non-HF GH and suggest that subjects with non-FH GH show high levels of oxysterols in response to hepatic overproduction of cholesterol
