    Monetary policy co-movement and spillover of shocks among BRICS economies

    The 2008 global financial crisis has revealed the possibility of cross-border spillover effects of domestic Monetary Policy (MP) on financial stability and capital flows around the world. Recognizing these facts, Central Banks in Advanced Economies (AE) have undertaken simultaneous Monetary Policy actions to minimize collateral damage and contain financial risks. In this paper, we investigate whether a similar spillover and co-movement of Monetary Policy exist among BRICS countries. Specifically, we study the transmission of monetary policy shocks among the member countries using monthly data. We use the method of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Vector Autoregression Model to identify possible dynamic relationships. Our results indicate possible co-movement in interest rates and significant cross-border transmission of monetary policy shocks among the BRICS countries

    Single gallstone associated with high fasting insulin level

    PubMedID: 27097712Gallstone (GS) formation is a multifactorial process and one of the associated factors is hyperinsulinemia. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the association between size and count of gallstones, and insulin levels and resistance. The study group composed of 84 patients who have ultrasonographically confirmed gallstone(s). Insulin level of all participants were measured and insulin resistance was calculated with the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index. All p-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. There were 28 patients with single stone and 56 with multiple stones. Mean insulin level was 12.54 ±11.66 ml/U (median 9.91 ml/U, IQR 6.33) and 56.3% of patients had insulin resistance. Mean stone size was 7.82 ±7.52 mm (median 6 mm and IQR 11.75). There was a non-significant association and correlation between insulin level and size of GS (p=0.129; r =0.16). There was significant difference between single stone group and multiple stones group, according to the insulin level

    Thermoplastics when they become thermally conductive, have a great potential to be used in thermal management applications due to their low cost, lightweight, and flexibility. Here, synthetic graphite and graphene are used as thermally conductive fillers to fabricate Polyphenylene Sulfide-(PPS) based composite materials with high thermal conductivity. Graphene and graphite added PPS composites were manufactured by using a twin-screw extruder and injection molding machine. Physical, thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the composites were investigated by several characterization methods including thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry. thermomechanical analysis, scanning electron microscopy. thermal diffusivity measurement, and tensile and flexural tests, The in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivity coefficient of graphene (5 wt. %) loaded synthetic graphite (40 wt. %)/PPS composites are greatly improved to 26.45 and 5.02 W/mK, respectively compared to that of neat PPS. The outstanding in-plane thermal conductivity of graphene loaded graphite/PPS composites is attributed to the formation of an effective thermal conductive pathway due to the alignment of the layered structure of graphene and graphite fillers in the flow direction.scientific and technological research council of Turkey [117M088]The authors are grateful for the funding from the scientific and technological research council of Turkey (Project no: 117M088)

    Apoptosis in the traumatic and degenerative tears of human meniscus

    PubMedID: 18446320The apoptotic bodies were observed aging in osteoarthritic cartilage and meniscus but there is still a lack of knowledge in the literature about the relationship between meniscal injury and apoptosis. The aim of this study is to investigate the apoptotic changes on meniscal tears caused by degeneration and trauma. Thirty-eight specimens of human meniscal tissues harvested from cadavers and patients were selected from groups below the age of 40. There were 14 normal meniscal tissues from cadavers in the control group. There were 24 meniscal tissues harvested from patients who had had arthroscopic operations for meniscal tear due to degeneration or trauma. The torn meniscal samples were divided into two groups according to their etiologies, either degenerative or traumatic. Apoptotic cells were investigated in each of the three groups in the histopathological examination. There was statistically significant difference among the groups according to apoptotic index (p 0.001).
