Bimodality in low-luminosity E and S0 galaxies
Stellar population characteristics are presented for a sample of low-luminosity early-type galaxies (LLEs) in order to compare them with their more luminous counterparts. Long-slit spectra of a sample of 10 LLEs were taken with the ESO New Technology Telescope, selected for their low luminosities. Line strengths were measured on the Lick standard system. Lick indices for these LLEs were correlated with velocity dispersion (σ), alongside published data for a variety of Hubble types. The LLEs were found to fall below an extrapolation of the correlation for luminous ellipticals and were consistent with the locations of spiral bulges in plots of line strengths versus σ. Luminosity weighted average ages, metallicities and abundance ratios were estimated from χ2 fitting of 19 Lick indices to predictions from simple stellar population models. The LLEs appear younger than luminous ellipticals and of comparable ages to spiral bulges. These LLEs show a bimodal metallicity distribution, consisting of a low-metallicity group (possibly misclassified dwarf spheroidal galaxies) and a high-metallicity group (similar to spiral bulges). Finally, they have low α-element to iron peak abundance ratios indicative of slow, extended star formation
A single cell but many different transcripts: A journey into the world of long non-coding RNAs
In late 2012 it was evidenced that most of the human genome is transcribed but only a small percentage of the transcripts are translated. This observation supported the importance of non-coding RNAs and it was confirmed in several organisms. The most abundant non-translated transcripts are long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). In contrast to protein-coding RNAs, they show a more cell-specific expression. To understand the function of lncRNAs, it is fundamental to investigate in which cells they are preferentially expressed and to detect their subcellular localization. Recent improvements of techniques that localize single RNA molecules in tissues like single-cell RNA sequencing and fluorescence amplification methods have given a considerable boost in the knowledge of the lncRNA functions. In recent years, single-cell transcription variability was associated with non-coding RNA expression, revealing this class of RNAs as important transcripts in the cell lineage specification. The purpose of this review is to collect updated information about lncRNA classification and new findings on their function derived from singlecell analysis. We also retained useful for all researchers to describe the methods available for singlecell analysis and the databases collecting single-cell and lncRNA data. Tables are included to schematize, describe, and compare exposed concepts
Systematic search for gamma-ray periodicity in active galactic nuclei detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope
We use nine years of gamma-ray data provided by the Fermi Large Area
Telescope (LAT) to systematically study the light curves of more than two
thousand active galactic nuclei (AGN) included in recent Fermi-LAT catalogs.
Ten different techniques are used, which are organized in an automatic
periodicity-search pipeline, in order to search for evidence of periodic
emission in gamma rays. Understanding the processes behind this puzzling
phenomenon will provide a better view about the astrophysical nature of these
extragalactic sources. However, the observation of temporal patterns in
gamma-ray light curves of AGN is still challenging. Despite the fact that there
have been efforts on characterizing the temporal emission of some individual
sources, a systematic search for periodicities by means of a full likelihood
analysis applied to large samples of sources was missing. Our analysis finds 11
AGN, of which 9 are identified for the first time, showing periodicity at more
than 4sigma in at least four algorithms. These findings will help in solving

The Line Emission Region in III Zw 2: Kinematics and Variability
We have studied the Ly-al, Hbeta, Halpha and Mg II2798 line profiles of the
Seyfert 1 galaxy III Zw 2. The shapes of these broad emission lines show
evidence of a multicomponent origin and also features which may be identified
as the peaks due to a rotating disk. We have proposed a two-component Broad
Line Region (BLR) model consisting of an inner Keplerian relativistic disk and
an outer structure surrounding the disk. The results of the fitting of the four
Broad Emission Lines (BELs) here considered, are highly consistent in both the
inner and outer component parameters. Adopting a mass of approx. 2 E8 sollar
masses for the central object we found that the outer radius of the disk is
approximately equal for the four considered lines (approx 0.01 pc). However,
the inner radius of the disk is not the same: 0.0018 pc for Ly-alpha, 0.0027 pc
for Mg II, and 0.0038 pc for the Balmer lines. This as well as the relatively
broad component present in the blue wings of the narrow [OIII] lines indicate
stratification in the emission-line region. Using long-term Hbeta observations
(1972-1990, 1998) we found a flux variation of the BEL with respect to the

UV Imaging of the Galaxy Cluster CL0939+4713 (Abell 851) at z=0.41
The first UV F300W and F218W WFPC2 observations of the rich galaxy cluster
CL0939+4713 at z=0.41 are presented and discussed. UV/optical two-color and c-m
diagrams of the sources detected in the F300W waveband are constructed. Thanks
to pre-existing HST optical images of the same field a morphological
classification for the majority of these objects is also provided. Moreover,
taking advantage of recent redshift surveys along CL0939+4713 line of sight,
separate diagrams comparing the properties of galaxies belonging to the cluster
and to its close projected field are presented. Possible evolutionary effects
in the UV from z~0.4 to present time are investigated by comparing the
restframe [mid-UV-Optical] colors of galaxies in CL0939+4713 with balloon-borne
data of the Coma cluster, as well as by resorting to suitable galaxy evolution
models. Finally, current attempts to constrain the epoch of the UV-upturn onset
