    Evaluating the Effects of a Brief Assertiveness and Help Seeking Skill Intervention

    Children in foster care lead their lives at an increased risk for mental health issues that are often complicated by the unstable and unpredictable nature of their living arrangements and interpersonal relationships. As such, there is substantial need to examine brief therapies and interventions for use with children in foster care and children who have experienced similar trauma and instability. Mental health care providers for children in foster care often may not have sufficient periods of time to implement treatment with fidelity. The present study investigated the efficacy of a summer camp based, brief behavioral intervention targeting help-seeking behavior and assertiveness to create meaningful skill improvement in a sample of children in foster care. Three, 30-min group sessions of a targeted assertiveness skill intervention were conducted on a sample of 13 children in foster care between the ages of 6 and 12 and compared to an assessment only control. Measures of general assertiveness, emotions towards seeking help, and assertiveness skill related to asking for help were used in a pretest-posttest format to assess the efficacy of the intervention. Results showed that participants in the intervention condition significantly improved on measures of general assertiveness and assertiveness skill, though not on the measure of emotions towards situations in which they would use these skills. These findings support the use of a brief intervention to teach assertive communication and help-seeking skill. Limitations and future directions are discussed

    The evolutionary time scale of Sakurai's object: A test of convection theory?

    Sakurai's object (V4334 Sgr) is a born again AGB star following a very late thermal pulse. So far no stellar evolution models have been able to explain the extremely fast evolution of this star, which has taken it from the pre-white dwarf stage to its current appearance as a giant within only a few years. A very high stellar mass can be ruled out as the cause of the fast evolution. Instead the evolution time scale is reproduced in stellar models by making the assumption that the efficiency for element mixing in the He-flash convection zone during the very late thermal pulse is smaller than predicted by the mixing-length theory. As a result the main energy generation from fast proton capture occurs closer to the surface and the expansion to the giant state is accelerated to a few years. Assuming a mass of V4334 Sgr of 0.604Msun -- which is consistent with a distance of 4kpc -- a reduction of the mixing length theory mixing efficiency by a factor of ~ 100 is required to match its evolutionary time scale. This value decreases if V4334 Sgr has a smaller mass and accordingly a smaller distance. However, the effect does not disappear for the smallest possible masses.     The Circumstellar Extinction of Planetary Nebulae

    We analyze the dependence of circumstellar extinction on core mass for the brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Magellanic Clouds and M31. We show that in all three galaxies, a statistically significant correlation exists between the two quantities, such that high core mass objects have greater extinction. We model this behavior, and show that the relation is a simple consequence of the greater mass loss and faster evolution times of high mass stars. The relation is important because it provides a natural explanation for the invariance of the [O III] 5007 planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) with population age: bright Population I PNe are extinguished below the cutoff of the PNLF. Approaches are often interdisciplinary, exploiting new types of sources such as material culture and oral history as well as exploring new uses of traditional documentary sources. These studies invite comparison among the experiences with alcohol of various societies and suggest the utility for social historians of examining international discourses over the use and governance of a set of substances persistently intertwined in human affairs.Les articles suivants ont été choisis parmi ceux qui ont été présentés à l'occasion du International Congress on the Social History of Alcohol, en 1993.     A Possible Hidden Population of Spherical Planetary Nebulae

    We argue that relative to non-spherical planetary nebulae (PNs), spherical PNs are about an order of magnitude less likely to be detected, at distances of several kiloparsecs. Noting the structure similarity of halos around non-spherical PNs to that of observed spherical PNs, we assume that most unobserved spherical PNs are also similar in structure to the spherical halos around non-spherical PNs. The fraction of non-spherical PNs with detected spherical halos around them, taken from a recent study, leads us to the claim of a large (relative to that of non-spherical PNs) hidden population of spherical PNs in the visible band. Building a toy model for the luminosity evolution of PNs, we show that the claimed detection fraction of spherical PNs based on halos around non-spherical PNs, is compatible with observational sensitivities. We use this result to update earlier studies on the different PN shaping routes in the binary model. We estimate that ~30% of all PNs are spherical, namely, their progenitors did not interact with any binary companion. This fraction is to be compared with the ~3% fraction of observed spherical PNs among all observed PNs. From all PNs, ~15% owe their moderate elliptical shape to the interaction of their progenitors with planets, while \~55% of all PNs owe their elliptical or bipolar shapes to the interaction of their progenitors with stellar companions.Comment: AJ, in pres

    On the Luminosities and Temperatures of Extended X-ray Emission from Planetary Nebulae

    We examine mechanisms that may explain the luminosities and relatively low temperatures of extended X-ray emission in planetary nebulae. By building a simple flow structure for the wind from the central star during the proto, and early, planetary nebulae phase, we estimate the temperature of the X-ray emitting gas and its total X-ray luminosity. We conclude that in order to account for the X-ray temperature and luminosity, both the evolution of the wind from the central star and the adiabatic cooling of the post-shocked wind's material must be considered. The X-ray emitting gas results mainly from shocked wind segments that were expelled during the early planetary nebulae phase, when the wind speed was moderate. Alternatively, the X-ray emitting gas may result from a collimated fast wind blown by a companion to the central star. Heat conduction and mixing between hot and cool regions are likely to occur in some cases and may determine the detailed X-ray morphology of a nebula, but are not required to explain the basic properties of the X-ray emitting gas.Comment: ApJ, submitted; 16 page

    Chemical Abundances of Planetary Nebulae in the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy

    Spectrophotometry and imaging of the two planetary nebulae He2-436 and Wray16-423, recently discovered to be in the Sagittarius dwarf elliptical galaxy, are presented. Wray16-423 is a high excitation planetary nebula (PN) with a hot central star. In contrast He2-436 is a high density PN with a cooler central star and evidence of local dust, the extinction exceeding that for Wray16-423 by E(B-V)=0.28. The extinction to Wray16-423, (E(B-V)=0.14), is consistent with the extinction to the Sagittarius (Sgr) Dwarf. Both PN show Wolf-Rayet features in their spectra, although the lines are weak in Wray16-423. Images in [O III] and H-alpha+[N II], although affected by poor seeing, yield a diameter of 1.2'' for Wray16-423 after deconvolution; He~2-436 was unresolved. He2-436 has a luminosity about twice that of Wray16-423 and its size and high density suggest a younger PN. In order to reconcile the differing luminosity and nebular properties of the two PN with similar age progenitor stars, it is suggested that they are on He burning tracks The abundance pattern is very similar in both nebulae and shows an oxygen depletion of -0.4 dex with respect to the mean O abundance of Galactic PN and [O/H] = -0.6. The Sgr PN progenitor stars are representative of the higher metallicity tail of the Sgr population. The pattern of abundance depletion is similar to that in the only other PN in a dwarf galaxy companion of the Milky Way, that in Fornax, for which new spectra are presented. However the abundances are larger than for Galactic halo PN suggesting a later formation age. The O abundance of the Sgr galaxy deduced from its PN, shows similarities with that of dwarf ellipticals around M31, suggesting that this galaxy was a dwarf elliptical before its interaction with the Milky Way.Comment: 24 pages, Latex (aas2pp4.sty) including 5 postscript figures.     Exploring Halo Substructure with Giant Stars. VI. Extended Distributions of Giant Stars Around the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy -- How Reliable Are They?

    The question of the existence of active tidal disruption around various dSph galaxies remains controversial. That debate often centers on the nature (bound vs. unbound) of extended populations of stars. However, the more fundamental issue of the very existence of the extended populations is still contentious. We present an evaluation of the debate centering on one particular dSph, Carina, for which claims both for and against the existence of stars beyond the King radius have been made. Our review includes an examination of all previous studies bearing on the Carina radial profile and shows that the survey method which achieves the highest detected dSph signal-to-background in the outer parts of the galaxy is the Washington M, T2 + DDO51 (MTD) filter approach from Paper II in this series. We then address statistical methods used to evaluate the reliability of MTD surveys in the presence of photometric errors and for which a new, a posteriori statistical analysis methodology is provided. Finally, these statistical methods are tested by new spectroscopy of stars in the MTD-selected Carina candidate sample. Of 74 candidate giants with follow-up spectroscopy, the MTD technique identified 61 new Carina members, including 8 stars outside the King radius. From a sample of 29 stars not initially identified as candidate Carina giants but that lie just outside of our selection criteria, 12 have radial velocities consistent with membership, including 5 extratidal stars. Carina is shown to have an extended population of giant stars extending to a major axis radius of 40' (1.44x the nominal King radius).Comment: 56 pages, 10 figures.
