    Automated, objective texture segmentation of multibeam echosounder data - Seafloor survey and substrate maps from James Island to Ozette Lake, Washington Outer Coast

    Without knowledge of basic seafloor characteristics, the ability to address any number of critical marine and/or coastal management issues is diminished. For example, management and conservation of essential fish habitat (EFH), a requirement mandated by federally guided fishery management plans (FMPs), requires among other things a description of habitats for federally managed species. Although the list of attributes important to habitat are numerous, the ability to efficiently and effectively describe many, and especially at the scales required, does not exist with the tools currently available. However, several characteristics of seafloor morphology are readily obtainable at multiple scales and can serve as useful descriptors of habitat. Recent advancements in acoustic technology, such as multibeam echosounding (MBES), can provide remote indication of surficial sediment properties such as texture, hardness, or roughness, and further permit highly detailed renderings of seafloor morphology. With acoustic-based surveys providing a relatively efficient method for data acquisition, there exists a need for efficient and reproducible automated segmentation routines to process the data. Using MBES data collected by the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS), and through a contracted seafloor survey, we expanded on the techniques of Cutter et al. (2003) to describe an objective repeatable process that uses parameterized local Fourier histogram (LFH) texture features to automate segmentation of surficial sediments from acoustic imagery using a maximum likelihood decision rule. Sonar signatures and classification performance were evaluated using video imagery obtained from a towed camera sled. Segmented raster images were converted to polygon features and attributed using a hierarchical deep-water marine benthic classification scheme (Greene et al. 1999) for use in a geographical information system (GIS).     Spatiotemporal chaos induces extreme events in an extended microcavity laser

    Extreme events such as rogue wave in optics and fluids are often associated with the merging dynamics of coherent structures. We present experimental and numerical results on the physics of extreme events appearance in a spatially extended semiconductor microcavity laser with intracavity saturable absorber. This system can display deterministic irregular dynamics only thanks to spatial coupling through diffraction of light. We have identified parameter regions where extreme events are encountered and established the origin of this dynamics in the emergence of deterministic spatiotemporal chaos, through the correspondence between the proportion of extreme events and the dimension of the strange attractor

    Storage and recall of weak coherent optical pulses with an efficiency of 25%

    We demonstrate experimentally a quantum memory scheme for the storage of weak coherent light pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition in a Pr^{3+}: YSO crystal at 2.1 K. Precise optical pumping using a frequency stable (about 1kHz linewidth) laser is employed to create a highly controllable Atomic Frequency Comb (AFC) structure. We report single photon storage and retrieval efficiencies of 25%, based on coherent photon echo type re-emission in the forward direction. The coherence property of the quantum memory is proved through interference between a super Gaussian pulse and the emitted echo. Backward retrieval of the photon echo emission has potential for increasing storage and recall efficiency.Comment: 5,

    Improving Structural Lumber Quality in a Sample of Picea Mariana Logs Sawn According to the Knots

    This paper examines the effect of knots on the strength recovery of black spruce lumber. A model was developed and used to simulate sawing and grading of boards from knotty logs. Since a log internal defect scanner was unavailable, the internal knot morphology was modeled from external measurements. A standard cant and flitch sawing pattern was used in the simulations and rotated about the log axis. for each 30° of log rotation, the theoretical lumber grades were obtained based on knot sizes and positions within the boards. A best and worst sawing rotation angle based on the potential lumber grade yield was retained for each of 54 logs simulated Half of the logs were sawn into 2 X 4 nominal lumber according to the best rotation angle and the other half according to the worst rotation angle. The resulting pieces of lumber were first visually graded according to the knots and then according to all defects, followed by dynamic MOE testing and finally tested to destruction using a third-point standard bending procedure. The results demonstrate that there was little difference in visual grades between the "best" and "worst" groups and that knots played a minimal role in grade determination of the boards. However, there was significant difference in terms of MOE values, where the group of "best" boards showed an overall 15% increase over the "worst" boards. This result significantly impacts the potential MSR yield of the sample pieces of lumber. Bending tests showed a lurther 25% difference in average MOR between the two groups. These results suggest that there is potential for black spruce to yield higher strength lumber when knots are considered during breakdown. Further refinements should include a model that determines quality in terms of knot position within the board section rather than one that determines quality in terms of potential visual grades

    Lawyers and Sawyers: Venetian Forest Law and the Conquest of Terraferma (1350-1476)

    Throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Venice played a direct role in shaping the future of Northeastern Italy. The standing scholarship views Venetian involvement on the mainland as either an abandonment of the city’s maritime tradition or as a buffer zone against rival powers, like Milan. Venice’s western mainland empire, Terraferma, provided Venice with many commercial products that the Eastern Mediterranean did not. One mainland product, timber, was a central focus of Venetian expansion into Terraferma and has thus far been neglected by historians. This thesis argues that the Venetian Republic manipulated mainland legal traditions in order to obtain direct control over the forest resources of Terraferma. The pressures placed upon Venice by timber shortages and rival powers in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries instigated a departure from Venice’s passive management of mainland cities and encouraged the city to strengthen its defenses through territorial expansion and forest conservation policies. Timber acquired from Terraferma was one of the vital sinews that bound the Venetian military and mercantile machine together. In order to directly control the mainland’s timber resources, the Venetians inserted their usufructory claims into the legal traditions of mainland communities. Archival sources and primary histories illustrate that Venetian forest policy evolved from cordial requests for timber into legal statutes that controlled local communities’ access to timber stands. The fall of Constantinople in 1453 and Negroponte in 1471 opened a window of opportunity, into which the Venetians inserted the mainland legal concept of “right to reserve,” diritto di reserva, in order expand and formalize their legal claims to Terraferma common forestland. The promulgation of six forest laws in 1476 punctuated the development of Venetian forest law in the fifteenth century. The laws governed the usage of forest resources and placed the Venetians in direct control of all of Terraferma’s community forests. The Venetians answered the question “Who owns the forest?” through the development of forest laws that placed timber ownership directly with a centralized government. The question easily expands into “Who owns the land, and all of its natural resources?” American natural resource managers and NGO’s continue to develop the American answer to the question. The Venetian forest narrative provides us with one possible answer to the question that elicits further conversations. Understanding Venice’s domination of mainland cities for ship-timber may also elicit further insight into how and why modern states dominate their neighbors for natural resources

    Growth Of AlN Crystals On AlN/SiC Seeds By AlN Powder Sublimation In Nitrogen Atmosphere

    AlN single crystals were grown on AlN/SiC seeds by sublimation of AlN powder in TaC crucibles in a nitrogen atmosphere. The seeds were produced by metallorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of AlN on SiC crystals. The influence of growth temperature, growth time and source-toseed distance on the crystallinity and the crystal growth rate were investigated. Crystals were grown in an RF heated sublimation reactor at growth temperatures ranging from 1800-2000 °C, at a pressure of 600 Torr, nitrogen flow-rate of 100 sccm and source-to-seed distances of 10 and 35 mm. At 1870 °C and a source-to-seed distance of 35 mm, isolated crystals were observed with few instances of coalescence. At 1930 °C, a source-to-seed distance of 10 mm and longer growth times (~30 hrs), crystal coalescence was achieved. Above 1930 °C, the decomposition of SiC was evidently affecting the growth morphology and resulted in growth of polycrystalline AlN. After an initial nucleation period, the observed growth rates (10-30 μm/hr) were in close agreement with predictions of a growth model that assumed gas-phase diffusion controlled growth. Optical and electron microscope observations revealed step-flow growth, while X-ray diffraction results showed the single crystal nature of the grown material. Single crystalline AlN was grown over surface areas of 200-300 mm2 and was transparent and essentially colorless

    Visualising the past – an evaluation of processes and sequences for fingermark recovery from old documents

    This study aimed to collect data on the effectiveness of most of the fingermark visualisation reagents currently used on porous surfaces on fingermarks aged for up to 90 years, significantly extending the timescales for which such information exists. A limited subset of the variables associated with processing of old fingermarks was explored, with a focus on the use of 1,8 diazafluoren-9-one (DFO), 1,2-indandione, ninhydrin, and physical developer. These techniques were used in sequence on batches of cheques between 11 and 32 years old, and on documents dating from the 1920s and 1940s. The potential for applying a physical developer enhancement process (blue toning) as the final step in the sequence was also explored. The benefits of using processing sequences on porous items were clearly demonstrated, with all processes in the sequence adding value in terms of additional marks found on the cheques up to 32 years old. In addition, physical developer was found to be capable of developing fingermarks up to 90 years old, whereas the amino acid reagents appear less effective on documents of 70 years and older. An experimental physical developer formulation with reduced environmental impact was found to be as effective as the existing process in these experiments. Blue toning was found to visualise an additional 10-25% of marks, and its wider use after silver-based deposition processes is recommended based on the evidence from this study.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
