    High level of 3^3He polarization of 81\% Maintained in an on-beam 3^3He spin filter using SEOP

    Maintaining high levels of 3He polarization over long periods of time is important to many areas of fundamental and particle beam physics. Long measurement times are often required in such experiments and the data quality is a function of the 3He polarization. This is the case for neutron scattering where the 3He can be used to analyze the spin of a scattered neutron beam and relatively small fluxes of polarized neutrons leads to experiment times longer than several days. Consequently the J\"ulich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) is developing spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) systems capable of polarizing the 3He gas in place on a typical neutron instrument. Using a polarizer device we constructed a high level of 3He polarization of 81 % \pm2% was maintained with good time stability. Such levels of polarization maintained over time will be able to reduce the measurement times for such experiments and eliminate time dependent data corrections.Comment: 4 pages 2 figure

    Dynamic Considerations for Control of Closed Life Support Systems

    Reliability of closed life support systems depend on their ability to continue supplying the crew's needs during perturbations and equipment failures. The dynamic considerations interact with the basic static design through the sizing of storages, the specification of excess capacities in processors, and the choice of system initial state. A very simple system flow model was used to examine the possibilities for system failures even when there is sufficient storage to buffer the immediate effects of the perturbation. Two control schemes are shown which have different dynamic consequences in response to component failures

    Welding monitoring system

    This invention relates to systems for remotely monitoring automatic welding operations, and more particularly to a system wherein the welder is readily positionable, while components of the optical system remain fixed. A welder having an electrode is mounted in an enclosure containing a pair of mirrors. The electrode passes through an opening in the first mirror and a gas cup. The mirror reflects an image of a welding operation taken through the opening of the gas cup to the second mirror. The second mirror then reflects the image through a rotary coupling to a third mirror which, in turn, reflects the image to a receiving lense mounted to a second rotatable coupling. The image is then projected via a fiber optic bundle to a filter unit where selected wavelengths of light are filtered from the welding image. The filter unit is coupled to an enlarger which enlarges the image and passes it to a camera. The camera is connected to an electronic eclipser which selectively darkens the brightest portions of the image. Finally, the image is recorded by a video tape recorder and displayed by a monitor

    A combined numerical and experimental study is carried out for the postbuckling behavior of a stiffened composite panel. The panel is rectangular and is subjected to static in-plane compression on two opposite edges to the collapse level. Nonlinear (large deflection) plate theory is employed, together with an experimentally based failure criterion. It is found that the stiffened composite panel can exhibit significant postbuckling strength

    An investigation of personalities of superintendents from selected public school districts within the western United States

    The purpose of this study was to establish 16PF personality profiles for superintendents of large and small public school districts from eleven western states, and to determine the significant differences, if any, between the profiles; Sixteen null hypotheses were formulated based on the sixteen primary personality factors of the 16PF. The first of these hypotheses was: There was no significant difference between the mean score of superintendents from large public school districts and the mean score of superintendents from small public school districts on Factor A, Social Orientation, of the 16PF a significance level of.05. The remaining fifteen hypotheses were stated similarly utilizing the other fifteen personality factors; Data was gathered, using the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire, from sixty superintendents, thirty from large school districts and thirty from small school districts, selected from the states of Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico; Conclusions. Several conclusions were evident from the analysis of the data in the study. (1) There was a significant difference between the mean scores of superintendents on Factor B, Ability to Discern Relationships, of the 16PF. This implied that superintendents from large school districts were more abstract thinking, more intelligent, and showed better judgment than superintendents from small school districts. (2) There was a significant difference between the mean scores of superintendents on Factor C, Adaptation to the Environment, of the 16PF. This indicated that superintendents from large school districts were more calm, more emotionally stable and mature, and less affected by feelings than superintendents from small school districts. (3) There was a significant difference between the mean scores of superintendents on Factor I, Emotional Sensitivity, of the 16PF. This suggested that superintendents from large school districts were more tender-minded, more sensitive, and more sentimental than superintendents from small school districts. (4) There was a significant difference between the mean scores of superintendents on Factor Q1, Orientation Toward Change, of the 16PF. This indicated that superintendents from large school districts were more experimenting and more open to change, less conservative, and less tradition bound than superintendents from small school districts

    Traditionally globular clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies have been distinguished by using one or more of the following criteria: (1) mass, (2) luminosity, (3) size, (4) mass-to-light ratio and (5) spread in metallicity. However, a few recently discovered objects show some overlap between the domains in parameter space that are occupied by galaxies and clusters.     Semi-Markov adjunction to the Computer-Aided Markov Evaluator (CAME)

    The rule-based Computer-Aided Markov Evaluator (CAME) program was expanded in its ability to incorporate the effect of fault-handling processes into the construction of a reliability model. The fault-handling processes are modeled as semi-Markov events and CAME constructs and appropriate semi-Markov model. To solve the model, the program outputs it in a form which can be directly solved with the Semi-Markov Unreliability Range Evaluator (SURE) program. As a means of evaluating the alterations made to the CAME program, the program is used to model the reliability of portions of the Integrated Airframe/Propulsion Control System Architecture (IAPSA 2) reference configuration. The reliability predictions are compared with a previous analysis. The results bear out the feasibility of utilizing CAME to generate appropriate semi-Markov models to model fault-handling processes

    Nonlinear system controller design based on domain of attaction: An application to CELSS analysis and control

    Nonlinear system controller design based on the domain of attraction is presented. This is particularly suited to investigating Closed Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS) models. In particular, the dynamic consequences of changes in the waste storage capacity and system mass, and how information is used for control in CELSS models are examined. The models' high dimensionality and nonlinear state equations make them difficult to analyze by any other technique. The domain of attraction is the region in initial conditions that tend toward an attractor and it is delineated by randomly selecting initial conditions from the region of state space being investigated. Error analysis is done by repeating the domain simulations with independent samples. A refinement of this region is the domain of performance which is the region of initial conditions meeting a performance criteria. In nonlinear systems, local stability does not insure stability over a larger region. The domain of attraction marks out this stability region; hence, it can be considered a measure of a nonlinear system's ability to recovery from state perturbations. Considering random perturbations, the minimum radius of the domain is a measure of the magnitude of perturbations for which recovery is guaranteed. Design of both linear and nonlinear controllers are shown. Three CELSS models, with 9 to 30 state variable, are presented. Measures of the domain of attraction are used to show the global behavior of these models under a variety of design and controller scenarios
