    Capability driven development: an approach to designing digital enterprises

    The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s12599-014-0362-0[EN] The need for organizations to operate in changing environments is addressed by proposing an approach that integrates organizational development with information system (IS) development taking into account changes in the application context of the solution. This is referred to as Capability Driven Development (CDD). A meta-model representing business and IS designs consisting of goals, key performance indicators, capabilities, context and capability delivery patterns, is being proposed. The use of the meta-model is validated in three industrial case studies as part of an ongoing collaboration project, whereas one case is presented in the paper.     Part 8: Designing and Delivering Smart Services in the Digital AgeInternational audienceIn order to be successful in the market in the long term, enterprises must not only continuously optimize their operations but also constantly innovate. It is necessary to develop radically new digital services which disrupt their existing business model. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), it is a major challenge to put the generated solutions into practice. They have to cope with digitalization while having limited resources. The presented paper starts by examining the challenges for SMEs in the context of digitalization. Thus, an analysis of the approaches used in practice for implementing digital services in 36 SMEs is carried out. Essential differences between start-ups and established SMEs are identified. On this basis, a capability-based, agile methodology is presented which supports enterprises in advancing newly developed, digital services from prototype status to the customer’s environment.     Part 2: Short PapersInternational audienceEfficient value creation and service delivery processes are considered as key factor to competitiveness in a globalized market. The systematic management of the capabilities of an enterprise is emerging into a key activity for achieving efficiency. In capability management, the capability design and delivery approach (CDD) has been proposed and its utility was demonstrated in previous work. An essential activity in CDD is the analysis of the context of capability delivery in order to understand the cause of variations in delivery of capabilities. This paper builds on CDD and elaborates on the feature of CDD to combine local context information from individual clients with global context information from the capability provider when optimizing capability delivery. An additional method component for the CDD methodology is proposed and demonstrated using a case from business process outsourcing

    Part 4: Reviews and Analyses of Modeling MethodsInternational audienceIn this era of rapid change and major technology-enabled transformations, information systems design needs to take into account the specific context of the organizational setting and the strategic direction of the enterprise. To this end, researchers and practitioners have built on the concept of capability to analyze what a business can and should do to manage its strategic trajectories. This paper describes four categories of modeling and analysis requirements to deal with capability formation. The requirements are identified through a review of the origins of the capability concept in the strategic management literature. A set of guidelines is proposed as part of a modeling framework based on the i* language. Enterprise Capabilities are modeled as a specialized type of intentional actor so that their socio-technical characteristics can be specified and analyzed. This approach to modeling capabilities enables reasoning about (1) why a capability is needed, (2) how it is achieved, (3) how it fits within the organizational and social setting of the enterprise, and (4) what relationships are required for its success. The applicability of the guidelines and associated viewpoints are demonstrated on a chatbot example
