The empirical link between export dispersion and export performance: a contingency-based approach

Practitioners and scholars point out that firms are increasingly dispersing their capabilities across organizational functions. However, it is not clear whether all forms of dispersion, of any function, result in the same consequences. This study initiates investigation into the link between the cross-functional dispersion of influence on export marketing decisions (export dispersion) and export performance. Drawing on data from a sample of 225 UK exporters, the findings support the argument that active participation of non-export functions in export-marketing decisions affects export success. However, those performance consequences are dependent on internal and external contingencies. Export dispersion is beneficial for export performance when the export customer environment is more turbulent and, simultaneously, the export technological environment is more stable and the firm has lower levels of export information sharing. In all other scenarios examined in this study, greater levels of concentration of export decision-making (i.e. lower levels of export dispersion) appear to be more beneficial for export performance. Our findings imply that the management of the firm’s level of export dispersion is a complex task, whereby the degree of export dispersion pursued needs to match external environmental and internal firm factors

A DFT study on secondary reaction pathways in the acid-catalysed Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime in aprotic solvent

Non-availability of competent supervisory staff, a focus on improving performance indicators rather than clinical guidance, and lack of a functional referral system, collectively create an environment that is non-conducive for improving patient care while also contributing to the isolation of physicians. Applying a systems thinking approach and using measles and tuberculosis as case examples, the study examined human advice-seeking behavior of primary health care (PHC) physicians in a rural district of Pakistan including the degree to which the existing PHC system supports their access to human advice. Findings underscore the need for a functional information system comprising context-sensitive knowledge management

The AU/NEPAD Peace and Security Governance in Africa

Peace and security sustainability in Africa has become a vital tool for the developmental agenda of the Africa Union. Hence, the continent’s conflicting issues and fighting against various groups that emerged from militancy, insurgency and terrorism in Africa is the reason why the peace and security department of the African Union was established for the purpose of solving such problems in order to sustain a peaceful African environment. The main objective of the paper is to draw the role of the African Union (AU) and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) in assisting the African countries in resolving the conflicts which could lead to a state of insecurity. The work made use of qualitative research design through the conduct of interviews as well as the use of other sources such as AU/NEPAD documents, internet sources and journals for the purpose of data collection. The findings revealed that, NEPAD works with the African countries at the country level through the provision of advisory and partnership role on peace and security governance. At the continental level, NEPAD report to the African Union on issues relating to peace and security sustainability which are handled by the AU’s department for Peace and Security.

A comparison of numerical simulations and analytical theory of the dynamics of interacting magnetic vortices

Magnetostatic interactions between vortices in closely spaced planar structures are important for applications including vortex-based magnonic crystals and spin torque oscillator networks. Analytical theories that include magnetostatic interaction effects have been proposed but have not yet been rigorously tested. Here, we compare micromagnetic simulations of the dynamics of magnetic vortices confined in three disks in an equilateral triangle configuration to analytical theories that include coupling. Micromagnetic simulations show that the magnetostatic coupling between the disks leads to splitting of the gyrotropic resonance into three modes and that the frequency splitting increases with decreasing separation. The temporal profiles of the magnetization depend on the vortex polarities and chiralities; however, the frequencies depend only on the polarity combinations and will fall into one of two categories: all polarities equal or one polarity opposite to the others, where the latter leads to a larger frequency splitting. Although the magnitude of the splitting observed in the simulations is larger than what is expected based on purely dipolar interactions, a simple analytical model that assumes dipole-dipole coupling captures the functional form of the frequency splitting and the motion patterns just as well as more complex models

Global orientation and export competitive advantage : a study of Malaysian firms

    Get PDF
Recent globalization studies pinpoint to tracing the way that a global orientation is implemented and the effect it has on shaping firm's performance. The globalization literature connects the creation of competitive advantages with following a more standardized marketing approach across global markets, whereas the marketing adaptation literature declares that adaptation is necessary when consumers needs and wants differ significantly. Yet, there exists a lack of conceptual clarity and empirical evidence as to whether, and how, global export orientation and adaptation can be reconciled for competitive advantage. This study makes a step toward addressing this knowledge void by examining the interplay between global export orientation and product adaptation in realizing cost advantage and distribution advantage. Drawing on cross-sectional survey data from 144 Malaysian exporters, the results demonstrate that global export orientation has a positive impact on both cost and distribution competitive advantages. However, the quantity of export product adaptation pursued has a double-edged moderating effect. While on one hand adaptation weakens the global export orientation-cost advantage relationship, hindering the attainment of cost advantages, on the other it holds a positive moderating effect for the global export orientation-distribution advantage relationship
