    KACST Arabic Text Classification Project: Overview and Preliminary Results

    Electronically formatted Arabic free-texts can be found in abundance these days on the World Wide Web, often linked to commercial enterprises and/or government organizations. Vast tracts of knowledge and relations lie hidden within these texts, knowledge that can be exploited once the correct intelligent tools have been identified and applied. For example, text mining may help with text classification and categorization. Text classification aims to automatically assign text to a predefined category based on identifiable linguistic features. Such a process has different useful applications including, but not restricted to, E-Mail spam detection, web pages content filtering, and automatic message routing. In this paper an overview of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) Arabic Text Classification Project will be illustrated along with some preliminary results. This project will contribute to the better understanding and elaboration of Arabic text classification techniques

    Dual Spectral Attention Model for Iris Presentation Attack Detection

    The widespread use of iris recognition systems has led to a growing demand for enhanced security measures to counter potential iris presentation attacks, also known as anti-spoofing. To enhance the security and reliability of iris recognition systems, researchers have developed numerous methods for detecting presentation attacks. Most of these methods lack precision in detecting unknown attacks compared to known attacks. In addition, most literature on iris presentation attack detection (PAD) systems utilizes near-infrared (NIR) samples as inputs. These samples produce superior-quality and robust images with less reflection in the cornea of the eye. Despite this, due to the widespread use of smartphones and the necessity for unsupervised identity verification, visible-light samples play a crucial role in detecting presentation attacks. These samples can be easily captured using smartphone cameras. In this paper, a dual-spectral attention model has been developed to train a unified model for multiple real-world attack scenarios. Two different scenarios were tested. In the first scenario, the model was trained as a one-class anomaly detection (AD) approach, while in the second scenario, it was trained as a normal two-class detection approach. This model achieved the best result for the attack presentation classification error rate (APCER) of 4.87% in a one-class AD scenario when tested on the attack dataset, outperforming most studies on the same test dataset. These experimental results suggest that future research opportunities in areas such as working with visible light images, using an AD approach, and focusing on uncontrolled environment samples and synthetic iris images may improve iris detection accuracy

    The clinical utility of forced oscillation technique during hospitalisation in patients with exacerbation of COPD

    Background: Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) is an innovative tool to measure within-breath reactance at 5 Hz (ΔXrs5Hz) but its feasibility and utility in acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) is understudied. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in 82 COPD patients admitted due to AECOPD. FOT indices were measured and the association between these indices and spirometry, peak inspiratory flow rate, blood inflammatory biomarkers and patient-reported outcomes including assessment of dyspnoea, quality of life, anxiety and depression and frailty at admission and discharge were explored. Results: All patients were able to perform FOT in both sitting and supine position. The prevalence of expiratory flow limitation (EFL) in the upright position was 39% (32 out of 82) and increased to 50% (41 out of 82) in the supine position. EFL (measured by ΔXrs5Hz) and resistance at 5 Hz (Rrs5Hz) negatively correlated with forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1); those with EFL had lower FEV1 (0.74±0.30 versus 0.94±0.36 L, p = 0.01) and forced vital capacity (1.7±0.55 versus 2.1±0.63 L, p = 0.009) and higher body mass index (27 (21-36) versus 23 (19-26) kg·m-2, p = 0.03) compared to those without EFL. During recovery from AECOPD, changes in EFL were observed in association with improvement in breathlessness. Conclusion: FOT was easily used to detect EFL during hospitalisation due to AECOPD. The prevalence of EFL increased when patients moved from a seated to a supine position and EFL was negatively correlated with airflow limitation. Improvements in EFL were associated with a reduction in breathlessness. FOT is of potential clinical value by providing a noninvasive, objective and effort-independent technique to measure lung function parameters during AECOPD requiring hospital admission

    Once Daily Versus Overnight and Symptom Versus Physiological Monitoring to Detect Exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

    Background: Earlier detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations may facilitate more rapid treatment with reduced risk of hospitalization. Changes in pulse oximetry may permit early detection of exacerbations. We hypothesized that overnight pulse oximetry would be superior to once-daily monitoring for the early detection of exacerbations. / Objective: This study aims to evaluate whether measuring changes in heart rate and oxygen saturation overnight is superior to once-daily monitoring of both parameters and to assess symptom changes in facilitating earlier detection of COPD exacerbations. / Methods: A total of 83 patients with COPD were randomized to once-daily or overnight pulse oximetry. Both groups completed the COPD assessment test questionnaire daily. The baseline mean and SD for each pulse oximetry variable were calculated from 14 days of stable monitoring. Changes in exacerbation were expressed as Z scores from this baseline. / Results: The mean age of the patients was 70.6 (SD 8.1) years, 52% (43/83) were female, and the mean FEV1 was 53.0% (SD 18.5%) predicted. Of the 83 patients, 27 experienced an exacerbation. Symptoms were significantly elevated above baseline from 5 days before to 12 days after treatment initiation. Day-to-day variation in pulse oximetry during the stable state was significantly less in the overnight group than in the once-daily group. There were greater relative changes at exacerbation in heart rate than oxygen saturation. An overnight composite score of change in heart rate and oxygen saturation changed significantly from 7 days before initiation of treatment for exacerbation and had a positive predictive value for exacerbation of 91.2%. However, this was not statistically better than examining changes in symptoms alone. / Conclusions: Overnight pulse oximetry permits earlier detection of COPD exacerbations compared with once-daily monitoring. Monitoring physiological variables was not superior to monitoring symptoms, and the latter would be a simpler approach, except where there is a need for objective verification of exacerbations. / Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03003702; https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT0300370

    Use, utility and methods of telehealth for patients with COPD in England and Wales: a healthcare provider survey

    INTRODUCTION: Although the effectiveness of domiciliary monitoring (telehealth) to improve outcomes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is controversial, it is being used in the National Health Service (NHS). AIM: To explore the use of teleheath for COPD across England and Wales, to assess the perceptions of clinicians employing telehealth in COPD and to summarise the techniques that have been used by healthcare providers to personalise alarm limits for patients with COPD enrolled in telehealth programmes. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey consisting of 14 questions was sent to 230 COPD community services in England and Wales. Questions were designed to cover five aspects of telehealth in COPD: purpose of use, equipment type, clinician perceptions, variables monitored and personalisation of alarm limits. RESULTS: 65 participants completed the survey from 52 different NHS Trusts. 46% of Trusts had used telehealth for COPD, and currently, 31% still provided telehealth services to patients with COPD. Telehealth is most commonly used for baseline monitoring and to allow early detection of exacerbations, with 54% believing it to be effective. The three most commonly monitored variables were oxygen saturation, heart rate and breathlessness. A variety of methods were used to set alarm limits with the majority of respondents believing that at least 40% of alarms were false. CONCLUSION: Around one-third of responded community COPD services are using telehealth, believing it to be effective without robust evidence, with a variety of variables monitored, a variety of hardware and varying techniques to set alarm limits with high false alarm frequencies

    A nationwide survey of public COPD knowledge and awareness in Saudi Arabia: A population-based survey of 15,000 adults

    BACKGROUND: There is a concerning lack of representative data on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) awareness in Saudi Arabia, and a significant proportion of the population is vulnerable to developing a smoking habit, which is a major risk factor for the disease. METHODS: Population-Based Survey of 15,000 people was conducted to assess the public knowledge and awareness of COPD across Saudi Arabia from October 2022 to March 2023. RESULTS: A total of 15002 responders completed the survey, with a completion rate of 82%. The majority 10314 (69%) were 18–30 year and 6112 (41%) had high school education. The most common comorbidities among the responders were depression (7.67%); hypertension (6%); diabetes (5.77%) and Chronic Lung Disease (4.12%). The most common symptoms were dyspnea (17.80%); chest tightness (14.09%) and sputum (11.19%). Among those who complains of any symptoms, only 16.44% had consulted their doctor. Around 14.16% were diagnosed with a respiratory disease and only 15.56% had performed pulmonary function test (PFT). The prevalence of smoking history was 15.16%, in which current smokers were 9.09%. About 48% of smokers used cigarette, 25% used waterpipe and around 27% were E-cigarette users. About 77% of the total sample have never heard about COPD. Majority of current smokers (73.5%; 1002), ex-smokers (68%; 619), and non-smokers (77.9%; 9911) are unaware of COPD, p value <0.001. Seventy five percent (1028) of the current smokers and 70% (633) of the ex-smokers have never performed PFT, p value <0.001. Male, younger age (18–30 years), higher education, family history of respiratory diseases, previous diagnosis of respiratory disease, previous PFT, and being an ex-smokers increases the odds of COPD awareness, p-value <0.05. CONCLUSION: There is a significantly low awareness about COPD in Saudi Arabia, especially among smokers. A nationwide approach must include targeted public awareness campaigns, continued healthcare professional education, community-based activities encouraging diagnosis and early detection, advice on smoking cessation and lifestyle changes, as well as coordinated national COPD screening programs

    Methicillin-resistant <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> in Saudi Arabia: genomic evidence of recent clonal expansion and plasmid-driven resistance dissemination

Over recent decades, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is resistant to multiple antimicrobials, has emerged as a significant pathogenic strain in both hospital and community settings. The rapid emergence and dissemination of MRSA clones are driven by a dynamic and evolving population, spreading swiftly across regions on epidemiological time scales. Despite the vast geographical expanse and diverse demographics of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the broader West Asia region, the population diversity of MRSA in hospitals in these areas remains underexplored. Methods: We conducted a large-scale genomic analysis of a systematic Staphylococcus aureus collection obtained from 34 hospitals across all provinces of KSA, from diverse body sites between 2022 and 2024. The dataset comprised 581 MRSA and 31 methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolates, all subjected to whole-genome sequencing. A combination of phylogenetic and population genomics approaches was utilized to analyze the genomic data. Hybrid sequencing approach was employed to retrieve the complete plasmid content. Results: The population displayed remarkable diversity, comprising 48 distinct sequence types (STs), with the majority harboring community-associated SCCmec loci (types IVa, V/VII, and VI). Virulence factors associated with community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA), including Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) genes, were identified in 12 distinct STs. Dominant clones, including ST8-t008 (USA300), ST88-t690, ST672-t3841, ST6-t304, and ST5-t311, were associated with infections at various body sites and were widely disseminated across the country. Linezolid and vancomycin resistance were mediated by cfr-carrying plasmids and mutations in the vraR gene (involved in cell-wall stress response) and the murF gene (involved in peptidoglycan biosynthesis) in five isolates, respectively. Phylodynamic analysis revealed rapid expansion of the dominant clones, with their emergence estimated to have occurred 10–20 years ago. Plasmidome analysis uncovered a diverse repertoire of blaZ-containing plasmids and the sharing of erm(C)-encoding plasmids among major clades. The acquisition of plasmids coincided with clonal expansion. Conclusions: Our results highlight the recent concurrent expansion and geographical dissemination of CA-MRSA clones across hospitals. These findings also underscore the interplay between clonal spread and horizontal gene transfer in shaping the resistance landscape of MRSA

    Phytochemical analysis and antioxidant activity assessment of methanolic extract from jasmine flowers

    This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the phytochemical composition and antioxidant properties of the methanol extracts from Jasmine flowers. Employing a combination of advanced techniques, including Gas-Chromatography Mass-Spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and antioxidant activity assays, the research uncovered key insights into the bioactive potential of Jasmine. The GC-MS analysis identified nine distinct compounds, including major constituents, such as 2-Phenylthiolane (44.12%), Cyclohexene, 3-ethenyl- (25.88%), Acetaldehyde (12.70%), and N-Methylallylamine (10.31%) among others. The FTIR spectra revealed significant functional groups, including O-H and C-C stretches, suggesting the presence of phenolic compounds. The SEM imaging highlighted the morphological changes in the Jasmine flower powder, showing expanded oil glands post-pre-treatment, which enhanced the oil extraction process. The methanol extract exhibited a strong antioxidant activity, as evidenced by the DPPH radical scavenging assay. These findings position Jasmine flowers as a promising natural source of phytochemicals, particularly antioxidants, with potential for further pharmacological and industrial applications. Future studies could focus on isolating and evaluating additional bioactive compounds for their therapeutic potential

    Low-cost inorganic cation exchange membrane for electrodialysis: optimum processing temperature for the cation exchanger

    The optimum temperature for fixing zirconium phosphate, obtained by precipitation, on a low-cost ceramic support was determined in order to obtain an inorganic cation exchange membrane for electrodialysis. Zirconium phosphate ion exchange capacity maximised between 450 and 550°C, thus it was considered the optimum processing temperature. The origin of this maximum was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and termogravimetry and evolved gas analysis. Zirconium phosphate formation by precipitation in the porous network of the support was verified by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The membrane obtained after thermal treatment at 450°C displayed selectivity to the cations present in the spent rinse water of the chromium plating process.
