Design & investigation of 10x10 gbit/s MDM over hybrid FSO link under different weather conditions and fiber to the home
In this paper, we design and investigate 10-channels of mode division multiplexer (MDM) over hybrid free-space optics (FSO) link in several weather conditions to achieve the maximum possible medium range and fiber to the home (FTTH) for high bandwidth access networks. System capacity can be effectively increased with the use of MDM over hybrid FSO-FTTH. In this study, a 10-channel MDM over FSO-FTTH system has been analyzed in different weather conditions that operate at 1550 nm wavelength. The simulated system has transmitted 100 Gbit/s up for a distance of 3200 meters FSO in superbly clear weather condition. It also transmitted 100 Gbit/s up for a distance of 650 meters FSO during heavy rain. The validation of this study is measures based on eye diagrams bit-error rates (BER) that have been analyzed
X-Ray and Optical Properties of Black Widows and Redbacks
Black widows and redbacks are binary systems consisting of a millisecond
pulsar in a close binary with a companion having matter driven off of its
surface by the pulsar wind. X-rays due to an intra-binary shock have been
observed from many of these systems, as well as orbital variations in the
optical emission from the companion due to heating and tidal distortion. We
have been systematically studying these systems in radio, optical and X-rays.
Here we will present an overview of X-ray and optical studies of these systems,
including new XMM-Newton and NuStar data obtained from several of them, along

The Green Bank North Celestial Cap Pulsar Survey. IV: Four New Timing Solutions
We present timing solutions for four pulsars discovered in the Green Bank
Northern Celestial Cap (GBNCC) survey. All four pulsars are isolated with spin
periods between 0.26s and 1.84s. PSR J00382501 has a 0.26s
period and a period derivative of ,
which is unusually low for isolated pulsars with similar periods. This low
period derivative may be simply an extreme value for an isolated pulsar or it
could indicate an unusual evolution path for PSR J00382501, such as a
disrupted recycled pulsar (DRP) from a binary system or an orphaned central
compact object (CCO). Correcting the observed spin-down rate for the Shklovskii
effect suggests that this pulsar may have an unusually low space velocity,
which is consistent with expectations for DRPs. There is no X-ray emission
detected from PSR J00382501 in an archival swift observation, which suggests
that it is not a young orphaned CCO. The high dispersion measure of PSR
J1949+3426 suggests a distance of 12.3kpc. This distance indicates that PSR
J1949+3426 is among the most distant 7% of Galactic field pulsars, and is one
of the most luminous pulsars.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Therapeutic effect of hyperbaric oxygen in psoriasis vulgaris: two case reports and a review of the literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Psoriasis is an inflammatory and immunological cutaneous disease. The high morbidity in patients with psoriasis results from severe clinical manifestations and/or adverse effects of treatment. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and Federal Medicare and Medicaid Services have approved the use of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO<sub>2</sub>) for more than 15 indications, including wound healing, infections and late effects of radiation, which are largely unresponsive to conventional treatments. Accumulated data show that HBO<sub>2</sub> has anti-inflammatory effects and other positive influences on the immune system, making it a rational treatment in the management of psoriasis plaques and arthritis.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the cases of two patients with long histories of psoriasis vulgarus who exhibited marked improvement with use of HBO<sub>2.</sub> The first patient was 40 years old and had pustular psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. He was treated with six sessions of HBO<sub>2</sub> (at 2.8 atmospheres of pressure for 60 minutes), which successfully controlled his symptoms. At the 18-month post-treatment follow up, the patient exhibited complete remission of psoriasis and marked improvement in psoriatic arthritis without medication. The second patient was 55 years old with extensive psoriatic lesions, and exhibited marked improvement within 15 sessions of HBO<sub>2</sub>. No adverse effects of HBO<sub>2</sub> were identified.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>HBO<sub>2</sub> may possess potential therapeutic efficacy in the management of psoriasis. We outline the pathogenesis of psoriasis and the selective anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects of HBO<sub>2</sub>. We hope that this will provide a basis for elucidating the mechanisms of action and consequently pave the way for further controlled studies.</p
Recurrent Hypoglycemia Is Associated with Loss of Activation in Rat Brain Cingulate Cortex
A subset of people with diabetes fail to mount defensive counterregulatory responses (CRR) to hypoglycemia. Although the mechanisms by which this occurs remain unclear, recurrent exposure to hypoglycemia may be an important etiological factor. We hypothesized that loss of CRR to recurrent exposure to hypoglycemia represents a type of stress desensitization, in which limbic brain circuitry involved in modulating stress responses might be implicated. Here, we compared activation of limbic brain regions associated with stress desensitization during acute hypoglycemia (AH) and recurrent hypoglycemia (RH). Healthy Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to either acute or recurrent 3-d hypoglycemia. We also examined whether changes in neuronal activation were caused directly by the CRR itself by infusing epinephrine, glucagon, and corticosterone without hypoglycemia. AH increased neuronal activity as quantified by c-fos immunoreactivity (FOS-IR) in the cingulate cortex and associated ectorhinal and perirhinal cortices but not in an adjacent control area (primary somatosensory cortex). FOS-IR was not observed after hormone infusion, suggesting that AH-associated activation was caused by hypoglycemia rather than by CRR. Importantly, AH FOS-IR activation was significantly blunted in rats exposed to RH. In conclusion, analogous with other models of stress habituation, activation in the cingulate cortex and associated brain areas is lost with exposure to RH. Our data support the hypothesis that limbic brain areas may be associated with the loss of CRR to RH in diabetes
Prevalence and molecular characterization of Glucose-6-Phosphate dehydrogenase deficient variants among the Kurdish population of Northern Iraq
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Glucose-6-Phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a key enzyme of the pentose monophosphate pathway, and its deficiency is the most common inherited enzymopathy worldwide. G6PD deficiency is common among Iraqis, including those of the Kurdish ethnic group, however no study of significance has ever addressed the molecular basis of this disorder in this population. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of this enzymopathy and its molecular basis among Iraqi Kurds.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 580 healthy male Kurdish Iraqis randomly selected from a main regional premarital screening center in Northern Iraq were screened for G6PD deficiency using methemoglobin reduction test. The results were confirmed by quantitative enzyme assay for the cases that showed G6PD deficiency. DNA analysis was performed on 115 G6PD deficient subjects, 50 from the premarital screening group and 65 unrelated Kurdish male patients with documented acute hemolytic episodes due to G6PD deficiency. Analysis was performed using polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism for five deficient molecular variants, namely G6PD Mediterranean (563 C→T), G6PD Chatham (1003 G→A), G6PD A- (202 G→A), G6PD Aures (143 T→C) and G6PD Cosenza (1376 G→C), as well as the silent 1311 (C→T) mutation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among 580 random Iraqi male Kurds, 63 (10.9%) had documented G6PD deficiency. Molecular studies performed on a total of 115 G6PD deficient males revealed that 101 (87.8%) had the G6PD Mediterranean variant and 10 (8.7%) had the G6PD Chatham variant. No cases of G6PD A-, G6PD Aures or G6PD Cosenza were identified, leaving 4 cases (3.5%) uncharacterized. Further molecular screening revealed that the silent mutation 1311 was present in 93/95 of the Mediterranean and 1/10 of the Chatham cases.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The current study revealed a high prevalence of G6PD deficiency among Iraqi Kurdish population of Northern Iraq with most cases being due to the G6PD Mediterranean and Chatham variants. These results are similar to those reported from neighboring Iran and Turkey and to lesser extent other Mediterranean countries.</p
First Discovery of a Fast Radio Burst at 350 MHz by the GBNCC Survey
We report the first discovery of a fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 20200125A, by
the Green Bank Northern Celestial Cap (GBNCC) Pulsar Survey conducted with the
Green Bank Telescope at 350 MHz. FRB 20200125A was detected at a Galactic
latitude of 58.43 degrees with a dispersion measure of 179 pc cm, while
electron density models predict a maximum Galactic contribution of 25 pc
cm along this line of sight. Moreover, no apparent Galactic foreground
sources of ionized gas that could account for the excess DM are visible in
multi-wavelength surveys of this region. This argues that the source is
extragalactic. The maximum redshift for the host galaxy is ,
corresponding to a maximum comoving distance of approximately 750 Mpc. The
measured peak flux density for FRB 20200125A is 0.37 Jy, and we measure a pulse
width of 3.7 ms, consistent with the distribution of FRB widths observed at
higher frequencies. Based on this detection and assuming an Euclidean flux
density distribution of FRBs, we calculate an all-sky rate at 350 MHz of
FRBs sky day above a peak flux
density of 0.42 Jy for an unscattered pulse having an intrinsic width of 5 ms,
consistent with rates reported at higher frequencies. Given the recent
improvements in our single-pulse search pipeline, we also revisit the GBNCC
survey sensitivity to various burst properties. Finally, we find no evidence of
interstellar scattering in FRB 20200125A, adding to the growing evidence that
some FRBs have circumburst environments where free-free absorption and
