Non-intrusive method for audio quality assessment of lossy-compressed music recordings using convolutional neural networks

Most of the existing algorithms for the objective audio quality assessment are intrusive, as they require access both to an unimpaired reference recording and an evaluated signal. This feature excludes them from many practical applications. In this paper, we introduce a non-intrusive audio quality assessment method. The proposed method is intended to account for audio artefacts arising from the lossy compression of music signals. During its development, 250 high-quality uncompressed music recordings were collated. They were subsequently processed using the selection of five popular audio codecs, resulting in the repository of 13,000 audio excerpts representing various levels of audio quality. The proposed non-intrusive method was trained with the data obtained employing a well-established intrusive model (ViSQOL v3). Next, the performance of the trained model was evaluated utilizing the quality scores obtained in the subjective listening tests undertaken remotely over the Internet. The listening tests were carried out in compliance with the MUSHRA recommendation (ITU-R BS.1534-3). In this study, the following three convolutional neural networks were compared: (1) a model employing 1D convolutional filters, (2) an Inception-based model, and (3) a VGG-based model. The last-mentioned model outperformed the model employing 1D convolutional filters in terms of predicting the scores from the listening tests, reaching a correlation value of 0.893. The performance of the Inception-based model was similar to that of the VGG-based model. Moreover, the VGG-based model outperformed the method employing a stacked gated-recurrent-unit-based deep learning framework, recently introduced by Mumtaz et al. (2022)

Antropologia Maurice'a Blondela i kryzys modernistyczny

The paper presents an outline of the modernistic crisis, it concentrates especially on its French specific character, refers to many main representatives and reaction of Magisterium Ecclesiae. The first period of academic creativity of the French philosopher Maurice Blondel falls on that difficult period of modernistic crisis, what left clear traces especially on his anthropological thoughts. There are numerous references to that epoch in philosopher’s works. He expressed care about providing both an autonomy for rational philosophical argumentation, as well as an autonomy for the transcendence of the supernatural order. He devoted himself totally to profound criticism of the new culture and analysis of immanent limits of its positive nature. After presentation of basic papers of the French philosopher from that period, several, most important ideas, which were created because of the influence of modernism, such as: immanent method, criticism of historicism and extrinsicism, and Christological theme, have been outlined. Blondel marked main lines of his anthropology emphasizing clearly his distance to modernism by fighting representatives of radical rationalism and criticizing scholastic method

Spatial sound and emotions: A literature survey on the relationship between spatially rendered audio and listeners’ affective responses

With the development of the entertainment industry, the need for immersive and emotionally impactful sound design has emerged. Utilization of spatial sound is potentially the next step to improve the audio experiences for listeners in terms of their emotional engagement. Hence, the relationship between spatial audio characteristics and emotional responses of the listeners has been the main focus of several recent studies. This paper provides a systematic overview of the above reports, including the analysis of commonly utilized methodology and technology. The survey was undertaken using four literature repositories, namely, Google Scholar, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and AES E-Library. The overviewed papers were selected according to the empirical validity and quality of the reported studies. According to the survey outcomes, there is growing evidence of a positive influence of the selected spatial audio characteristics on the listeners’ affective responses. However, more data is required to build reliable, universal, and useful models explaining the above relationship. Furthermore, the two research trends on this topic were identified. Namely, the studies undertaken so far can be classified as either technology-oriented or technology-agnostic, depending on the research questions or experimental factors examined. Prospective future research directions regarding this topic are identified and discussed. They include better utilization of scene-based paradigms, affective computing techniques, and exploring the emotional effects of dynamic changes in spatial audio scenes

Rozumienie wiarygodności w apologetyce i we wczesnej teologii fundamentalnej

Podsumowując, należy podkreślić, że w wiarygodności chodzi zatem o moment, w którym podmiot (człowiek) dostrzega sens i znaczenie powiązane z jego osobistym życiem. Umieszczony wobec oczywistości sensu, podmiot wyraża potrzebę jego odniesienia do swojej sfery osobistej, aby dokonany wybór mógł być całkowicie wolny. Powszechność sensu i znaczenia nie przeszkadza, lecz przeciwnie faworyzuje relacje osobiste, na podstawie których każdy odkrywa, że ta rzeczywistość staje się jego własną rzeczywistością. Chociaż rzeczywistość ta jest aktualna dla wszystkich, to człowiek zauważa także, że jest ona zaadresowana do niego osobiście i dlatego ujmuje ją jako mającą znaczenie, gdyż przyjęcie jej prowadzi do pełnej osobistej realizacji. Chodzi zatem o jedyny akt wypełniony przez wierzącego w momencie, gdy dostrzega on objawienie jako pełnię sensu i zarazem, że ten sens ma znaczenie dla niego. Jest to akt, który obejmuje w nierozerwalną jedność inteligibilność wydarzenia, fakt zawierzenia temu wydarzeniu, ponieważ jest wiarygodne oraz praktykę (praxis), gdyż prowadzić ono będzie do ostatecznego spełnienia swego życia. We współczesnej teologii fundamentalnej poszukiwanie wiarygodności zostało wyraźnie ubogacone o wymiar soteryczny (Fragment tekstu)

Podstawy apologetyki konstruktywnej Paula de Brogliego

Apologetyka francuska drugiej połowy XIX w. przeżyła swój wielki rozkwit. Pojawiły się nowe propozycje metod w uzasadnianiu wiarygodności chrześcijaństwa. Niewątpliwie w nurcie odnowy apologetyki należy umieścić profesora apologetyki w Instytucie Katolickim P. de Brogliego, przedstawiciela tzw. apologetyki konstruktywnej. Zapisał się w historii apologetyki jako twórca metody transcendencji, odwołując się do przesłanek o charakterze historycznym i filozoficznym. Nie można pominąć jego wysiłków związanych z odparciem zarzutów wobec chrześcijaństwa, formułowanych ze strony pozytywizmu, scjentyzmu i naturalizmu. Należy także podkreślić pojawienie się pewnych symptomów apologetyki typu podmiotowego. Nie są to oczywiście propozycje tak wyraźnie sformułowane, jak u L. Ollé-Laprune’a, G. Fonsegrive’a czy M. Blondela, wybitnych przedstawicieli odnowy apologetyki w wymiarze podmiotowym przełomu XIX i XX stulecia. Mimo wyraźnych, nowatorskich elementów, apologetyka P. de Brogliego ma przede wszystkim charakter defensywny. Jest to apologetyka zapewnień i potwierdzeń. Wychodząc z pewności prawdy chrześcijaństwa, poszukiwał argumentów, aby ją podbudować i umocnić. W perspektywie współczesnej teologii fundamentalnej, wiele z jego propozycji utraciło swą siłę argumentacyjną (Fragment tekstu)
