Epiphytic lichen recolonization in the centre of Cracow (Southern Poland) as a result of air quality improvement

Epiphytic lichen distribution and diversity were investigated in seven localities in the centre of Cracow (South Poland). Field studies were carried out in the years 2007-2009. A total of 39 species were recorded at 434 sites; 6 species are new to Cracow. Compared to previous surveys, the overall situation has generally improved, with higher lichen species richness and cover rate. The area of former 'lichen desert' in the city centre has disappeared and it has been colonized by SO2 sensitive macrolichen species. Dominance of nitrogen- and dust-tolerant species has been observed. The health of lichen thalli has improved and many young specimens were recorded in the study area. These changes follow air quality improvement, mainly the SO2 decline, during the last twenty years. Transport-related NOx and dust have become the main pollutants in the centre of Cracow. The recolonization process seems to be not completed yet and further improvement in lichen distribution and diversity is expected. Thus long-term biomonitoring is required

Changes in the lichen biota of the Lions Rump area, King George Island, Antarctica, over the last 20 years

Climate changes observed in recent years in the maritime Antarctic have affected the tundra vegetation, including plant communities in which lichens are a dominant component. The results of comparative studies (1988 and 1990 vs. 2007 and 2008) on the dynamics of the lichen biota within the Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 151 (King George Island, Antarctica) minimally influenced by human impact, are presented. This long-term experiment is aimed at determining the trends and rate of changes on lichen biota induced by climate warming and rapid deglaciation. The most significant changes affecting the lichen biota have taken place in the forefield of a glacier and on the young moraines where in the second period of studies three species (Polyblastiagothica, Thelenellakerguelena, Thelocarponcyaneum) were not refound. There was also a reduction in the number of other sites for some species (e.g. Leptogiumpuberulum, Staurothellegelida) caused by substrate desiccation. On the other hand, there was an increase in the range of pioneering species (e.g. Bacidiachrysocolla, Caloplacajohnstonii, Candelariellaaurella, Lecanoradispersa) on young moraines recently uncovered by the retreating glacier. The smallest changes were observed on the cliff rocks near penguin colonies

Osiągnął najważniejsze urzędy – trzymał zarówno buławę wielką koronną, kasztelanię krakowską jak i liczne ważne oraz dochodowe starostwa. W chwili śmierci pozostawił olbrzymi majątek, który zapisał rodzinie, a część dochodów rozdysponował pomiędzy najbliższych współpracowników, służbę jak i przeznaczył na legaty kościelne. Struktura testamentu wpisuje się w konwencję ars moriendi, dokument zawiera również odniesienie do ceremoniału pogrzebowego. Poprzez interesujące przestawienia poszczególnych części testamentu jak i zwroty skierowane do rodziny, zwłaszcza do córki, edytowany dokument pozwala na drobiazgowe odkrywanie postawy hetmana wobec doczesności, relacji patronalno-klientalnych i tym samym uzupełnia wiadomości na temat życia jednej z najważniejszych postaci czasów saskich

The lichen biota of Antarctic Specially Protected Area No. 151, Lions Rump (King George Island)

Lions Rump lies on the southern coast of King George Bay on King George Island in Antarctica. The part of the area, as an effect of Polish initiative, has been approved as protected area (ASPA No. 151). The aim of this study was to document the occurrence and distribution of lichens to provide the baseline data for long-term monitoring of the ongoing changes in this valuable area

The diagnostic role of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT in the detection of neuroendocrine tumours

BACKGROUND: Positron emission tomography (PET) combined with computer tomography (CT) using 68Ga-DOTATATE is a promising method for the evaluation of patients with recognised or suspected neuroendocrine tumours (NET). The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT in the visualisation of the expression of somatostatin receptors (SSTR) and identification of new lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between December 2009 and January 2011 ninety-seven patients with confirmed (88 cases) or suspected (9 cases) NET underwent 68Ga DOTATATE PET/CT. The primary, confirmed or suspected, NET localizations were: GEP tumours — 71 patients; medullary thyroid carcinoma — 4 patients; cancer of an unknown primary — 14 patients; and NET in other localisations — 8 patients. PET/CT acquisitions were performed using standard techniques, 45 to 60 minutes after the intravenous injection of 111–185 MBq 68Ga-DOTATATE. RESULTS: 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT detected the presence of lesions demonstrating the somatostatin receptor affinity in 50 of the 97 patients (51.5%) and was negative in 47 patients (48.5%). Among 14 patients with metastatic unknown primary cancer, in 5 patients (45.5%) the primary tumour site was identified, and in 4 patients with medullary thyroid cancer distant metastases with SSTR expression were localized in only one patient. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirm the diagnostic role of 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT as an accurate method of identifying primary tumours and distant metastases. It provides information on tumour cell receptors status, which has a significant bearing on planning target radionuclide therapy. Overall, 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT can be used in staging, re-staging, and in regular follow up of oncology patients. Nuclear Med Rev 2011; 14, 1: 16–2
