    The exact elastodynamic scattering theory is constructed to describe the spectral properties of two- and more-cylindrical cavity systems, and compared to an elastodynamic generalization of the semi-classical Gutzwiller unstable periodic orbits formulas.     Strongly aligned molecules inside helium droplets in the near-adiabatic regime

    Iodine (I2_2) molecules embedded in He nanodroplets are aligned by a 160 ps long laser pulse. The highest degree of alignment, occurring at the peak of the pulse and quantified by cos2θ2D\langle \cos^2 \theta_{2D} \rangle, is measured as a function of the laser intensity. The results are well described by cos2θ2D\langle \cos^2 \theta_{2D} \rangle calculated for a gas of isolated molecules each with an effective rotational constant of 0.6 times the gas-phase value, and at a temperature of 0.4 K. Theoretical analysis using the angulon quasiparticle to describe rotating molecules in superfluid helium rationalizes why the alignment mechanism is similar to that of isolated molecules with an effective rotational constant. A major advantage of molecules in He droplets is that their 0.4 K temperature leads to stronger alignment than what can generally be achieved for gas phase molecules -- here demonstrated by a direct comparison of the droplet results to measurements on a \sim 1 K supersonic beam of isolated molecules. This point is further illustrated for more complex system by measurements on 1,4-diiodobenzene and 1,4-dibromobenzene. For all three molecular species studied the highest values of cos2θ2D\langle \cos^2 \theta_{2D} \rangle achieved in He droplets exceed 0.96.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Travelling and sticky affects: : Exploring teens and sexualized cyberbullying through a Butlerian-Deleuzian- Guattarian lens

    In this paper we combine the thinking of Deleuze and Guattari (1984, 1987) with Judith Butler’s (1990, 1993, 2004, 2009) work to follow the rhizomatic becomings of young people’s affective relations in a range of on- and off-line school spaces. In particular we explore how events that may be designated as sexual cyberbullying are constituted and how they are mediated by technology (such as texting or in/through social networking sites). Drawing on findings from two different studies looking at teens’ uses of and experiences with social networking sites, Arto in Denmark, and Bebo in the UK, we use this approach to think about how affects flow, are distributed, and become fixed in assemblages. We map how affects are manoeuvred and potentially disrupted by young people, suggesting that in the incidences discussed affects travel as well as stick in points of fixation. We argue that we need to grasp both affective flow and fixity in order to gain knowledge of how subjectification of the gendered/classed/racialised/sexualised body emerges. A Butlerian-Deleuzian-Guattarian frame helps us to map some of these affective complexities that shape sexualized cyberbully events; and to recognize technologically mediated lines of flight when subjectifications are at least temporarily disrupted and new terms of recognition and intelligibility staked out.     Adolescents and adults with Fontan circulation:insights from the PREpArE-Fontan registry

    The Patient Registry for Adolescents and Adults with Stable Fontan Circulation aims to describe a contemporary cohort of Fontan patients who could be eligible for a clinical trial investigating macitentan, an endothelin receptor antagonist. This international, non-interventional, multicentre, cross-sectional, observational registry enrolled patients with “stable” Fontan circulation ≥10 years following extra-cardiac conduit or lateral tunnel procedure. Main exclusion criteria were NYHA functional class IV, reoperation of Fontan circulation, or signs of disease worsening. Patient characteristics at enrolment are described; available data were collected during a single registration visit. Of the 266 screened patients, 254 were included in this analysis. At enrolment, median (interquartile range) age was 24 (20;30) years, 37%/63% of patients were from the USA/Europe, 54% were male, 54%/47% had undergone extra-cardiac conduit/lateral tunnel procedures, and 95% were in NYHA functional class I or II. History of arrhythmia was more common in older patients and patients with lateral tunnel; overall prevalence was 19%. Most laboratory values were within the normal range but mean creatinine clearance was abnormally low (87.7 ml/min). Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors were used by 48% of patients and their use was associated with creatinine clearance <90 ml/min (p = 0.007), as was Fontan completion at an older age (p = 0.007). 53.4% of patients had clinical characteristics that could potentially meet an endothelin receptor antagonist trial’s eligibility criteria. The PREpArE-Fontan registry describes a cohort of patients who could potentially participate in an endothelin receptor antagonist trial and identified early subtle signs of Fontan failure, even in “stable” patients

    An approach for the calculation of one-loop effective actions, vacuum energies, and spectral counting functions

    In this paper, we provide an approach for the calculation of one-loop effective actions, vacuum energies, and spectral counting functions and discuss the application of this approach in some physical problems. Concretely, we construct the equations for these three quantities; this allows us to achieve them by directly solving equations. In order to construct the equations, we introduce shifted local one-loop effective actions, shifted local vacuum energies, and local spectral counting functions. We solve the equations of one-loop effective actions, vacuum energies, and spectral counting functions for free massive scalar fields in Rn\mathbb{R}^{n}, scalar fields in three-dimensional hyperbolic space H3H_{3} (the Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space AdS3AdS_{3}), in H3/ZH_{3}/Z (the geometry of the Euclidean BTZ black hole), and in S1S^{1}, and the Higgs model in a (1+1)(1+1)-dimensional finite interval. Moreover, in the above cases, we also calculate the spectra from the counting functions. Besides exact solutions, we give a general discussion on approximate solutions and construct the general series expansion for one-loop effective actions, vacuum energies, and spectral counting functions. In doing this, we encounter divergences. In order to remove the divergences, renormalization procedures are used. In this approach, these three physical quantities are regarded as spectral functions in the spectral problem.Comment: 37 pages, no figure.     Case study on the efficacy of a lanthanum-enriched clay (Phoslock®) in controlling eutrophication in Lake Het Groene Eiland (The Netherlands)

    Lake Het Groene Eiland was created in the beginning of 2008 by construction of dikes for isolating it from the surrounding 220-ha water body. This so-called claustrum of 5 ha was treated using lanthanum-modified clay (Phoslock®) to control eutrophication and mitigate cyanobacterial nuisance. Cyanobacteria chlorophyll-a were significantly lower in the claustrum than those in the reference water body, where a massive bloom developed in summer, 2008. However, PO4-P and TP did not statistically differ in these two waters. TN and NO3-N were significantly lower in the claustrum, where dense submerged macrophytes beds developed. Lanthanum concentrations were elevated after the applications of the modified clay in the claustrum, but filterable lanthanum dropped rapidly below the Dutch standard of 10.1 μg l−1. During winter, dozens of Canada geese resided at the claustrum. Geese droppings contained an average of 2 mg PO4-P g−1 dry weight and 12 mg NH3-N g−1 dry weight and might present a growing source of nutrients to the water. Constructing the claustrum enabled unrestricted bathing in subsequent three summers, as no swimming bans had to be issued due to cyanobacteria blooms. However, the role of the modified clay in this positive outcome remains unclear, and longevity of the measures questionable.
