Narratives of middle classness: the lived experiences of women entrepreneurs in Maputo
The topic of middle class in Africa though broadly discussed, still faces significant gaps in terms of
empirical data, especially from sub-Saharan countries. It has been well-established that measures such
as income and consumption power are insufficient to assess middle classness. Everyday habits and
how these relate to status and prestige have been increasingly used in a number of disciplines as a
better gauge. Specific political and historical contexts have also been considered key to better
understand how people navigate classes.
This study aims to explore the concept of middle class in Mozambique, by trying to answer three
main questions: ‘How do women entrepreneurs in Maputo perceive middle classness?’; ‘What are the
views of today's women entrepreneurs in Maputo about changing class ambitions and expressions?’;
and ‘How can (female) entrepreneurship impact on social mobility?’. Here, entrepreneurship is
specifically regarded as formal entrepreneurship carried out by women in Maputo, Mozambique.
To answer these questions, life story interviews were conducted with women entrepreneurs from
Maputo and complemented by field observations and a review of relevant literature. The findings
suggest that Maputo middle class, as perceived by women entrepreneurs, is moving away from
traditional privileged and state dependent elites towards a more independent group of society,
characterised by their ambitions of self-fulfilment and the quest of a better life. Furthermore,
entrepreneurship is seen as a desirable option for social upward mobility, but its success is highly
dependent on factors such as socioeconomic backgrounds and the individual character.O tema da classe média em África, embora amplamente debatido, apresenta ainda lacunas empíricas
Sun protection potential determination of medicinal plants
Solar radiation is associated with problems such as skin cancer and early photoaging (Xiao et al., 2018). As a preventive and skin protective, synthetic compounds are used in various cosmetic products. However, the toxicity of these compounds is a major concern since it can cause health problems (Cefali et al., 2019). Plants exposed to high levels of solar radiation produce compounds to defend themselves from ultraviolet radiation and oxidative stress. Therefore, plants offer a source of UV protecting compounds that can be used in cosmetic products (Nunes et al., 2018). This study aims to determine the solar protection potential of Pterospartum tridentatum and Melilotus indicus. Aqueous and methanolic extracts (80:20, V/V) of each plant were prepared and subjected tophytochemical screening. Colorimetric methods were also used to determine antioxidant activity in vitro (DPPH assay, Iron Chelating Activity (ICA) and Total Phenolic Compounds (TPC) content), absorption coefficient and sun protection factor (SPF).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
This paper draws insights from three key strategic management theories: the stakeholder theory, the network theory and the relationship quality theory. It examines how viable tourism policies could best be developed in PGNP, considering the stakeholder networks related to tourism, specifically by considering the relationship quality (trust, commitment and cooperation). Under this view it addresses the structure, nature and composition of ties among PNPG stakeholders using social network analysis (SNA) methodology, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques. Additionally, the study categorizes stakeholders according to the "stakeholder salience" model, illustrates the relationship quality among the network and stakeholder's positioning in a complex structure of relationships informing about interactions, providing possible directions to minimize potential constraints in networks.
fluminea: B. bocagei e Lepomis gibbosus.
1 cm).
Do
Contudo, a amplitude e direção dessa deslocação
The invasive clam Corbicula fluminea is the cause of severe impacts, both
environmental and economic, in invaded sites. Chemical and physical control
methods are particularly expensive and harmful to the environment, affecting
non-target species. Biological control of invasive species has the potential of
being an effective, safe, and low cost tool, which is also environmentallyfriendly.
Within the scope of this dissertation, we evaluated the potential of
using freshwater fish as biological control tools, in its direct (predation itself)
and indirect aspects (avoidance induction).
Initially, the potential of predation as a direct biological control method of C.
fluminea was evaluated. As a first step, inspection of stomach contents of fieldcollected
fish was performed in a network of canals where C. fluminea is highly
abundant. The presence of this clam was only confirmed in Barbus bocagei’s
stomachs, with a frequency of occurrence of 50%, but with a reduced relevance
(< 5% stomach content). Considering these data and the available literature,
two models were selected for predation experiments with C. fluminea: B.
bocagei and Lepomis gibbosus. The interest shown by both fish species in C.
fluminea individuals in predation experiments was extremely low, even with
small-sized clams (< 1 cm). Additional experiments allowed demonstrating that
the reduced utilization of C. fluminea as a prey was due to the protective role of
its shell. In practical terms, the potential of these fish species as C. fluminea
predators is reduced (Barbus) or null (Lepomis), precluding the possibility of
using them as direct control tools.
Using L. gibbosus as experimental model in laboratory, the indirect effects of
the presence of the fish on the behavior of C. fluminea were tested with
avoidance experiments. These experiments relied on the prey’s ability to
modify its behavior when it perceives predator infochemicals. Results showed
that the clams respond to the presence of the predator, by actively moving.
However, the amplitude and direction of this dislocation depended on the
presence of a refuge to the prey, the fish’s diet and light conditions. This
demonstrates the need to better understand these interactions, establishing the
utility of predators (or its infochemicals) as a way to create exclusion zones in
sensitive areas of water-dependent infrastructures
Mastocitose cutânea maculopapular
Mastocytosis is a rare disorder caused by proliferation and accumulation of mast cells in various tissues, with characteristic symptoms associated with the release of their mediators. Its cutaneous form, usually benign, is the most frequent among children.
The authors report the case of a two-month-old male infant who presented to the Emergency Department with small, tan-to-brown macules and papules distributed mainly on the trunk, which progressively became nodular and bullous, with one month of evolution. Darier´s sign was positive.
The absence of systemic signs and analytic (including serum tryptase level) and echographic changes was consistent with the diagnosis of maculopapular cutaneous mastocytosis, or urticaria pigmentosa, subsequently confirmed by skin biopsy.
Treatment with anti-histaminic therapy and topical immunosuppressant and avoidance of triggering factors led to a positive outcome.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
informação financeira relatada pelas entidades públicas, a nível nacional e
internacional.
The public sector has been confronted with the need to find a common
accounting basis in order to allow financial information comparability reported
by public entities.
There are efforts been developed towards an accounting harmonization and
some countries have already adopted their national accounting standards for
the public sector accordingly with International Public Sector Accounting
Standards (IPSAS). In Europe, the strategy related to the adoption of European
Public Sector Accounting Standards (EPSAS) is based on IPSAS adapted to
european public sector context.
In Portugal, like the accounting reform undertaken by introducing a new System
of Accounting Standards, it is expected that the accounting framework and
standards for the public sector will be also adjusted to the accounting
referential based on international accounting standards for public sector entities
adopted by the European Union (UE).
Given the above, this dissertation wants to address the impact of the eventual
adoption of the normative based on the IPSAS in the Public Sector, particularly
regarding the presentation of financial statements of Portuguese Public
Universities (UPP).
The study was based on the comparison of the POC-Education with IPSAS No.
1, No. 2 and No. 24 and on the Financial Report of the UPP, which identified
the differences between both normative and concluded that there is an impact
on the financial reporting of the UPP in terms of the complete set of financial
statements required as well as in their structure and content
In today’s society a person has many identities, depending on the service or organization, where their data is available. To effectively and safely manage all these identities is a hard task but also an extremely important one. The personal identity information or PII (Personally Identifiable Information) is the subject of the presented study. The possibility to use this type of information and to link it together is an opportunity that should not be missed. This work is an incursion through the Business Intelligence and through the related technologies aiming to apply that knowledge in the secure processing of the PII generated by the systems which manage the identities, the IAM systems. In other words, this work aims to study the possibility of including intelligence and auditing, in the IAM systems, to detect abnormal behaviours and to resolve that as quickly as possible. During this study there was some investigation on the IAM tools already existents, their features and auditing. The studied tools do not respond effectively to the problem of detecting errors and failures and resolve them quickly and for good. For that reason architecture and data model which will be the basis of all the IAM auditing system, is suggested in this study and it will permit the process and link the personal data generated by the IAM system. With the introduction of automatic processing of that data it will be possible to resolve some of the problems demonstrated in the specified use cases
Induction and determination of ROS and their effect on peroxisome dynamics
preveniu o alongamento peroxisomal.
ABSTRACT: Peroxisomes are single membrane bound subcellular organelles, which fulfill
important metabolic functions, for example in lipid and ROS metabolism, and are thus
indispensable for human health and development. Peroxisomes are highly flexible
organelles that rapidly assemble, multiply and degrade in response to metabolic
needs. In cultured cells, oxidative stress and other external stimuli (e. g. growth
factors, fatty acids, microtubule depolymerization) have been shown to induce
processes of growth (elongation) and division of peroxisomes, which are related to
peroxisome proliferation. Whereas some of the molecular components of the growth
and division machinery have been identified in the last years, the regulatory and
signaling pathways mediating peroxisome proliferation are largely unknown.
The aim of this master thesis was to examine the effects of different ROS-producing
external stimuli on the induction of growth/proliferation of the peroxisomal
compartment. A suitable mammalian cell culture system with a dynamic peroxisomal
compartment was selected and fluorescent-based assays for the detection of ROS
production and changes in the intracellular GSH levels were established. The setup
was first used to clarify if peroxisome elongation observed after depolymerization of
microtubules (by nocodazole) is mediated by ROS. Peroxisome elongation and
microtubule depolymerization after nocodazole treatment was monitored and
quantified by immunofluorescence microscopy. Although nocodazole induced an
increase in cellular ROS levels, a pre-treatment with antioxidants and lowering of
intracellular ROS levels did not prevent peroxisome elongation. These findings
demonstrate that the morphological changes of the peroxisomal compartment
induced by nocodazole are independent of ROS production. Furthermore, I examined
the effect of changes in the cellular redox state on the peroxisomal compartment.
Interestingly, the reduction of intracellular GSH levels by BSO, an inhibitor of γ-
glutamylcystein synthetase (γ-GCS), resulted in a prominent increase in peroxisomal
growth/elongation. ROS and GSH levels were determined by fluorescent-based
assays. Pre-treatment with antioxidants prevented peroxisome elongation indicating
that changes in the cellular (cytoplasmic) redox state lead to peroxisome proliferation,
which is supposed to have a protective function for the cell. Finally, I investigated
whether inhibition of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and thus, mitochondriaderived
ROS were capable of inducing peroxisomal growth and division. Among the
inhibitors tested, only rotenone, a complex I inhibitor, had a prominent effect on
peroxisome elongation. However, I demonstrated that this effect is due to a
microtubule-depolymerizing activity of rotenone. Thus, despite the close peroxisomemitochondria
relationship, mitochondria-derived ROS are unlikely to induce changes
of the peroxisomal compartment. Our findings also indicate that in vivo studies using
rotenone have to be interpreted with great care. In addition, the results show that
ROS can alter the dynamics of the peroxisomal compartment, but have to come from
specific locations (e.g. the cytosol) within the cell
This paper aims to analyze the consequences of the gradual evolution of unemployment, has induced the macro level, the sustainability of social security, the increase in spending on subsidies for the unemployed, lower revenue contributions of the active population and deterioration of overall financial balance of social security. Less human capital , resulting from economic weakness , political and social facing Portugal in recent years , together with the influence of the evolution of demographic indicators and evolution of pension expenditure , have put to test the actual liquidity and financial sustainability social security. Through the analysis of elements and budgetary data, it was concluded that social security introduced in 2012, the worst overall balance of the last five years. The actual expense showed an increase (2,9%) higher than the actual revenue (2,7%) , which generated a tiny budget balance of €419Millions. The increase in expenditure on social welfare system by which the charge is increased by €353.3Millions, for a total expenditure of €21.105Millions, an increase of 1,7% (compared to the previous year). This increase was developed primarily by the behavior of two budget headings, namely, expenditure on pensions (old age, invalidity and survivors), which appeared almost 70% of the money spent on social benefits (€14.428 Millions), and the spending on unemployment benefits and employment support funded under the welfare system of allocation, represented the 2nd line with greater weight in the total expense of the welfare system (12%). Due to decreased wages and rising unemployment (which in 2012 reached an annual average of 15.7%), spending on unemployment benefits - unemployment benefits and employment support, increased 23,3%, which forced the system of social protection spending €2.593Millions. In practice, the increase in unemployment and the increase in the number of unemployed tacit inherent in this phenomenon resulted in an expense account of social security, more than €490Millions, compared to 2011. Also the contributions revenue has fallen by €672Millions, which translated to a reduction of 0,9% of the active population , and also the reduction wage workers were targeted throughout 2012. Although, this study is a diagnosis and synthetic approximate the consequences of unemployment in the financial sustainability of social security , allows a realistic approach to the current precarious employment market, caused by the worsening economic and financial situation of Portugal, and that puts strongly concerned the future of the welfare state
Candida albicans virulence and drug-resistance requires the O-acyltransferase Gup1p
