    Characterization of the conglomerate form of acetyl-dl-leucine by thermal analysis and solubility measurements

    Starting from a mixture of enantiomers in solution, crystallization can generate different types of crystals. In order to determine which type of crystal is obtained in the case of acetylleucine, an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), analytical methods have been used to partially elucidate the binary and ternary phase diagrams of the system composed of the two enantiomers and water.The melting temperature phase diagram of this compound has been obtained by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyzes. The results show that it is characteristic of a conglomerate. This mode of crystallization has also been confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. Solubility measurements of enantiomerical mixtures in water enabled the determination of the ternary diagram of solubility. The empiric Meyerhoffer double solubility rule has been modified, due to the characterization of interactions between enantiomers

    Squids of the family Ommastrephidae are a vital part of marine food webs and support major fisheries around the world. They are widely distributed in the open ocean, where they are among the most abundant in number and biomass of nektonic epipelagic organisms. In turn, seven of the 11 genera of this family (Dosidicus, Illex, Martialia, Nototodarus, Ommastrephes, Sthenoteuthis, and Todarodes) are heavily preyed upon by top marine predators, i.e., birds, mammals, and fish, and currently support fisheries in both neritic and oceanic waters (Roper and Sweeney, 1984; Rodhouse, 1997). Their commercial importance has made the large ommastrephids the target of many scientific investigations and their biology is consequently reasonably well-known (Nigmatullin et al., 2001; Zuyev et al., 2002; Bower and Ichii, 2005). In contrast, much less information is available on the biology and ecological role of the smaller, unexploited species of ommastrephids (e.g., Eucleoteuthis, Hyaloteuthis, Ornithoteuthis, and Todaropsis)

    International audienceCone snails are predatory marine gastropods that prey on worms, molluscs and fish. The venoms of these animals are true pharmacological treasures, and with the recent approval of the first cone snail venom-derived drug, the pressure on the resource is set to increase. While habitat loss and over-collecting for the shell trade are the major threat to cone snail diversity, every effort should be made to preserve this unique pharmacopoeia, including reducing to a minimum the number of specimens collected for scientific purposes. To this end, we show how recent improvements in sensitivity, miniaturisation of equipment, high throughput screens and novel technologies can help deliver valuable scientific and economic outcomes from small quantities of these limited samples

    Assessment of Scour Development at a Deep-Water Marine Jetty Using 3d Computational Fluid Dynamics

    To assess the interaction of the tidal flow with a deep-water marine jetty, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to predict flow patterns for fast flood and ebb tide conditions both without and with the jetty in place. The modelled area covered three square kilometres of coastal bathymetry around the jetty head, with pile diameters of the order of one metre and water depths ranging from 3 m to 45 m. The predicted changes in velocity and bed shear stress distribution were used to explain the observed local bed level changes at this site over a period of three years

    International audienceVirtual Reality (VR) for Education is spreading around and more and more training centers want to provide digital training, especially using VR technologies. The VR market is in full growth and many companies, startups and research teams are working on developing VR for Education on a large scale. Many domains are concerned by this learning digitalization, like science (Oliveira et al., 2019), military (Taupiac, 2018) and so on. The benefits of VR for education are numerous (Mano, 2019) and deeply investigated since the beginning of VR. There are many approaches in the process of training with VR, particularly since the commercialization of new VR headsets like HTC Vive™ and Oculus Rift™. Those headsets allow room scale tracking and are shipped with 3D space tracked controllers, granting a better user experience and a higher diversity in virtual training situations. New headsets are also affordable and so not only reserved for industrials, research or military, leading to new use of VR. In the VR industry, we have noticed some approaches used for the design of scenario. One classic approach is "serious game" that mainly consists in cloning classical educational games to VR, like point and clicks, 360° videos (Rupp et al., 2016) or dialog tree situations. The main interest of this category relies on existing projects and previous experiences with "standard serious games". The drawback is about the freshness of VR: it may not be suitable for those existing projects that were working nicely on a 2D screen. This kind of transposition could lead to atrocious user experiences and the underuse of the potential of VR. For educational purposes, other developers have followed another path: replicate reality.
