Effects of the inclusion of ground Pouteria sapota kernel on intake, digestibility, and growth performance in lambs

Simple Summary: The concept of sustainable diets that are profitable, ethical, socioculturally acceptable, and environmentally beneficial is emerging as one of the key solutions to ensure the efficiency of livestock production systems. In this regard, agro-industrial by-products obtained from fruit processing have emerged as an alternative. Mamey pulp generates residual biomass from which the kernel is the main by-product that, due to its composition, can be used as ruminant feed. This study determined the effects of the inclusion of ground mamey kernel on intake, digestibility, and growth performance in lambs. No effects on nutrient intake or productive performance were observed. However, protein and fiber digestibility were reduced by ground mamey kernel inclusion. These findings suggest that mamey kernels can be included in ruminant diets. Abstract: This study determined the effect of replacing ground corn and soybean meal with ground Pouteria sapota kernel (PSSM) in lamb diets on nutrient intake and digestibility, performance, and carcass traits. Twenty-one male hair sheep lambs with an average body weight of 22 ± 3.5 kg were randomly assigned to three treatment diets containing PSSM at 0, 10, and 20% of the total dry matter (DM) inclusion. The study lasted 60 days, which included 15 days for adaption and 45 days for sample collection. The PSSM inclusion did not affect intake or performance (p > 0.05). However, ether extract (EE) digestibility linearly increased (p < 0.0001), while crude protein (CP) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) linearly decreased. Final body weight, total weight gain, average daily weight gain, feeding efficiency, and carcass traits were not affected by PSSM inclusion. In conclusion, these results suggest that PSSM can replace up to 200 g/kg DM of ground corn and soybean meal without affecting intake or animal performance

Using plant-based compounds as preservatives for meat products: a review

The susceptibility of meat and meat products (MP) to oxidation and microbial deterioration poses a risk to the nutritional quality, safety, and shelf life of the product. This analysis provides a brief overview of how bioactive compounds (BC) impact meat and MP preservation, and how they can be utilized for preservation purposes. The use of BC, particularly plant-based antioxidants, can reduce the rate of auto-oxidation and microbial growth, thereby extending the shelf life of MP. These BC include polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, terpenes, alkaloids, saponins, and coumarins, which have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Bioactive compounds can act as preservatives and improve the sensory and physicochemical properties of MP when added under appropriate conditions and concentrations. However, the inappropriate extraction, concentration, or addition of BC can also lead to undesired effects. Nonetheless, BC have not been associated with chronic-degenerative diseases and are considered safe for human consumption. MP auto-oxidation leads to the generation of reactive oxygen species, biogenic amines, malonaldehyde (MDA), and metmyoglobin oxidation products, which are detrimental to human health. The addition of BC at a concentration ranging from 0.025 to 2.5% (w/w in powdered or v/w in oil or liquid extracts) can act as a preservative, improving color, texture, and shelf life. The combination of BC with other techniques, such as encapsulation and the use of intelligent films, can further extend the shelf life of MP. In the future, it will be necessary to examine the phytochemical profile of plants that have been used in traditional medicine and cooking for generations to determine their feasibility in MP preservation

Investigaciones en construcción

El Instituto Unidad de Investigaciones Jurídico-Sociales Gerardo Molina, UNIJUS promueve y apoya el desarrollo e implementación de programas y proyectos de investigación que aporten al conocimiento de la realidad nacional e internacional, de las instituciones jurídicas, políticas y sociales, así como de las teorías jurídicas y políticas que contribuyan a la construcción de nuevas propuestas para la solución de las problemáticas que aquejan la sociedad. Por tal motivo, es fundamental el apoyo constante a la formación de semilleros de investigación en la Facultad de Derecho, Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de la Sede Bogotá, así como la consolidación de los semilleros ya existentes. En el año 2012, se desarrollaron las Convocatorias No. 12 y No. 13 para la selección de semilleros de Investigación en modalidad I y modalidad II. Como resultado de dicho proceso fueron seleccionadas doce propuestas de investigación integradas por un total de 32 estudiantes, quienes a su vez se encontraban vinculados a nueve grupos de investigación

Memorias semana de la Facultad de Educación. VII semana: historias, saberes y prácticas educativas innovadoras e incluyentes.

Las Memorias de la VII Semana de la Educación “Historias, saberes y prácticas educativas innovadoras e incluyentes”, publicadas por la Editorial de la Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios – UNIMINUTO, reúnen las ponencias y resúmenes sobre esta temática presentadas en un evento de realización anual, cuyo propósito es socializar experiencias investigativas y académicas de grupos, semilleros de investigación y trabajos de grado entre estudiantes y profesores de la Facultad de Educación, y con profesores y estudiantes de otras instituciones educativas que gentilmente compartieron experiencias en el campo de la educación, la pedagogía, el arte, la cultura y el deporte. El principal interés de este encuentro radica en recoger la construcción histórica educativa de la Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios – UNIMINUTO con respecto a sus orígenes y construcciones académicas; y las experiencias históricas de otras propuestas educativas a nivel de la educación infantil, básica, media y superior con tejido cultural y social, desde un enfoque diferencial y diverso en el cual todas las experiencias enriquecen la formación de maestros desde la innovación e inclusión en los diferentes contextos. En este encuentro participaron las universidades Antonio Nariño, de la Amazonia, del Rosario, La Gran Colombia y Pedagógica Nacional, así como la Corporación Escuela Pedagógica Experimental, el Centro Educativo de Nuestra Señora de la Paz, el Instituto Colombo Sueco y varios docentes de la Secretaría de Educación Distrital de Bogotá D. C

Biodiversity 2016. Status and Trends of Colombian Continental Biodiversity

This third volume of the annual report on biodiversity in Colombia continues the editorial line that begun in 2014. Using novel analytical and graphic proposals, these reports have the goal of communicating the contents to a broad public, making it available for discussion without sacrificing the quality of information. The challenge of communication continues to be a major part of the institutional project, and the new languages with which we are learning to communicate with society and other institutions are an experiment that we expect to be increasingly gratifying. The report for 2017 is already under construction and it counts on new digital technologies so the power of a colombian vital connection may be entirely expressed. The included content evidences that we are still far away from having a systematic follow-up about most of the topics related to the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is the only way to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and investments made by society. In fact, a limitation that is recognized is that of identifying positive or negative changes that affect different levels of organization of life on this planet; therefore, our global navigation route of the Aichi targets is still to be verified. An additional purpose of this process includes the invitation of all Colombians to contribute in constructing and maintaining basic monitoring indicators for management since it is impossible to identify long-term trends of flora and fauna in the country without the support of institutions, researchers, and citizens. This challenge is immense in a megadiverse country such as Colombia. For this reason, the report will continue to open its pages to experts, and even indigenous peoples or local communities, for them to present their perspectives about environmental change and its effects on biodiversity in a systematic and documented manner. This has the objective of stimulating the commitment of everyone in the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The only way of overcoming the risk of extinction is through the active process of social learning in which all sectors assume a part of the complex responsibility in protecting the forms of life of the country, a roughly counted tenth of all creatures on Earth. Estudios multidisciplinarios en Ciencias de la Salud

Es una distinción, como miembro de la Comisión del Programa del Doctorado en Ciencias de la Salud de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, presentar el libro titulado Estudios multidisciplinarios en Ciencias de la Salud, en el que distinguidos y reconocidos investigadores, entusiastas y comprometidos alumnos del programa nos dan a conocer los resultados de sus proyectos de investigación, trabajos que forman parte de los requisitos para acceder al grado de doctor. Entre las razones que invitan a la lectura del libro destaca su contenido conformado con la participación de autores en cuatro áreas en el campo de la salud: Odontología, Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición, Ciencias de la Conducta, y Enfermería y Obstetricia, quienes contribuyen a incrementar el acervo del conocimiento en cada área, en favor de la ciencia, la tecnología, y la salud física y mental de la población.Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México
