Light charged Higgs boson production at the Large Hadron electron Collider
We study the production of a light charged Higgs boson at the future Large
Hadron electron Collider (LHeC), through the process
considering both decay channels and in the final state. We analyse these processes in the context of the
2-Higgs Doublet Model Type III (2HDM-III) and assess the LHeC sensitivity to
such signals against a variety of both reducible and irreducible
backgrounds. We confirm that prospects for detection in the 2HDM-III are
excellent assuming standard collider energy and luminosity conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures. Accepted in Physical Review
WIDE - A Distributed Architecture for Workflow Management
This paper presents the distributed architecture of the WIDE workflow management system. We show how distribution and scalability are obtained by the use of a distributed object model, a client/server architecture, and a distributed workflow server architecture. Specific attention is paid to the extended transaction support and active rule support subarchitectures
A standardised method for measuring in situ denitrification in shallow aquifers: numerical validation and measurements in riparian wetlands
A tracer test to examine in situ denitrification in shallow groundwater by a piezometer with a packer system used bromide as a tracer of dilution and acetylene (10%) to block the denitrification process at the nitrous oxide stage. During the test, dissolved oxygen, nitrate (NO3-), bromide (Br-), nitrous oxide (N2O) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured. To calibrate the experimental method, comparison with numerical simulations of the groundwater transfer were carried out, taking into account the environmental characteristics. The method was tested by measurements undertaken in different environmental conditions (geology, land use and hydrology) in two riparian wetlands. Denitrification rates measured by this method ranged from 5.7 10-6 g N-NO3-L-1 h-1 to 1.97 10-3 g N-NO3-L-1 h-1 The method is applicable in shallow aquifers with a permeability from 10-2 to 10-4m s-1
A Tracking Fiber Detector based on Silicon Photomultipliers for the Kaos Spectrometer
A tracking detector based on two meters long scintillating fibers read out by
silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is being developed for the Kaos spectrometer at
the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Results from a prototype setup using 2 mm square
fibers and large area SiPM readout are presented. The detection efficiency of
such a combination was measured to be between 83 and 100% depending on the
threshold on the SiPM amplitude. A Monte Carlo simulation based on a physical
model was employed in order to extract the photon detection efficiency of the
SiPM devices.Comment: Contributed to 2008 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium, 19-25 October

Earnings Mobility in Times of Growth and Decline: Argentina from 1996 to 2003
In recent years, the economy of Argentina has experienced both rapid economic growth and severe economic decline. In this paper, we use a series of one-year long panels to study who gained the most in pesos when the economy grew and who lost the most in pesos when the economy contracted. Various considerations led us to expect that mobility would be divergent—that is, that the individuals who started with the highest initial earnings would enjoy the largest earnings gains in pesos. Contrary to expectations and for a wide range of specifications, mobility is found to be mostly convergent, sometimes neutral, and never divergent. We then demonstrate how generally rising inequality and convergent mobility can be reconciled. Thus, the panel data analysis performed in this paper presents a picture of economic growth that is much more pro-poor than what one gets from cross-sectional inequality comparisons
A note on the predictions of models with modular flavor symmetries
Models with modular flavor symmetries have been thought to be highly predictive. We point out that these predictions are subject to corrections from non–holomorphic terms in the Lagrangean. Specifically, in the models discussed in the literature, the Kähler potential is not fixed by the symmetries, for instance. The most general Kähler potential consistent with the symmetries of the model contains additional terms with additional parameters, which reduce the predictive power of these constructions. We also comment on potential ways of how one may conceivably retain the predictivity
Application of the war of attrition game to the analysis of intellectual property disputes
In many developing countries intellectual property infringement and the
commerce of pirate goods is an entrepreneurial activity. Digital piracy is very
often the only media for having access to music, cinema, books and software. At
the same time, bio-prospecting and infringement of indigenous knowledge rights
by international consortiums is usual in places with high biodiversity. In
these arenas transnational actors interact with local communities. Accusations
of piracy often go both ways. This article analyzes the case of southeast
Mexico. Using a war of attrition game theory model it explains different
situations of intellectual property rights piracy and protection. It analyzes
different levels of interaction and institutional settings from the global to
the very local. The article proposes free IP zones as a solution of IP
disputes. The formation of technological local clusters through Free
Intellectual Property Zones (FIPZ) would allow firms to copy and share de facto
public domain content for developing new products inside the FIPZ. Enforcement
of intellectual property could be pursuit outside of the FIPZ. FIPZ are
envisioned as a new type of a sui generis intellectual property regime
