    Guidelines for Process Safety Hazard Assessment Based on Process Information

    In any new chemical process development and design, process safety is a critical aspect to be considered besides economic and technical feasibility of the manufacture of the product. A lack of proper hazard assessment during the design phase may later result in accidents with disastrous consequences to workers, the public as well as the environment. Many methods have been introduced to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the safety level of processes. Despite the availability of a large amount of methods, a systematic framework that details guidelines for hazard identification, risk assessment, safety measure design, and safe critical decision-making is still missing. To address this issue, the main objective of this study was to propose a systematic framework that outlines comprehensive guidelines for assessing the safety performance of processes based on information from the piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID). Apart from proposing the framework, appropriate strategies for minimizing safety hazards and risks are also recommended. In addition, the user is assisted in selecting the most appropriate assessment method according to his or her needs and the scope and constraints of the assessment. A case study is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed framework

    Does work-life balance have a relationship with work performance?

    Attaining work-life balance is challenging. Juggling work and personal affairs can be a highly demanding effort and the inability to attend to everything can leave one frustrated and exhausted. Increased level of stress, turnover and absenteeism rate are some of the negative repercussions of this. This study therefore, aims to further examine the relationship between work-life balance and work performance among non-executive level staff at Sarawak State Civil service. There were 44 acceptable self-administered questionnaires collected and analysed out of 64 questionnaires that were distributed for this exploratory stage of study. The result disclosed a significant but weak relationship between work-life balance and job performance. As the result, the study proposes to outline a work-life balance practices or programs such as job design that helps in employee productivity, employee assistance programs, health programs, aerobic sessions, family day and encouragement for employees to participate in seminars on stress and time management. Genuine concern and extensive involvement of the company in achieving the work-life balance will yield positive outcome from the employees

    Alginate based sustainable films and composites for packaging: a review

    Alginate is an abundantly hydrophilic polysaccharide as much as 40 % of dry weight and commonly available in the cell wall of brown seaweed. The thickening, gel-forming and stabilizing properties of alginate makes it widely used biopolymer with a broader range of application including packaging. The superior valuable feature of alginate is the capability to yield a stable gel and insoluble polymer when they react through their carboxylate group with polyvalent metal cation especially Ca2+. Despite a wide range of applications, alginate has some drawbacks on the water resistivity due to hydrophilic nature, so its modifications with synthetic and natural polymers are carried out. This review article presents a different type of additives or polymer and their impact on the functional properties of alginate based composite films with special emphasis on packaging application
