Discrete Self-Similarity in Type-II Strong Explosions

    Get PDF
We present new solutions to the strong explosion problem in a non-power law density profile. The unperturbed self-similar solutions discovered by Waxman & Shvarts describe strong Newtonian shocks propagating into a cold gas with a density profile falling off as r−ωr^{-\omega}, where ω>3\omega>3 (Type-II solutions). The perturbations we consider are spherically symmetric and log-periodic with respect to the radius. While the unperturbed solutions are continuously self-similar, the log-periodicity of the density perturbations leads to a discrete self-similarity of the perturbations, i.e. the solution repeats itself up to a scaling at discrete time intervals. We discuss these solutions and verify them against numerical integrations of the time dependent hydrodynamic equations. Finally we show that this method can be generalized to treat any small, spherically symmetric density perturbation by employing Fourier decomposition

An SDN-based Approach For Defending Against Reflective DDoS Attacks

Distributed Reflective Denial of Service (DRDoS) attacks are an immanent threat to Internet services. The potential scale of such attacks became apparent in March 2018 when a memcached-based attack peaked at 1.7 Tbps. Novel services built upon UDP increase the need for automated mitigation mechanisms that react to attacks without prior knowledge of the actual application protocols used. With the flexibility that software-defined networks offer, we developed a new approach for defending against DRDoS attacks; it not only protects against arbitrary DRDoS attacks but is also transparent for the attack target and can be used without assistance of the target host operator. The approach provides a robust mitigation system which is protocol-agnostic and effective in the defense against DRDoS attacks

One-hundred years (and counting) of blast-associated traumatic brain injury

    Get PDF
Blast-associated traumatic brain injury (TBI) has become one of the signature issues of modern warfare and is increasingly a concern in the civilian population due to a rise in terrorist attacks. Despite being a recognised feature of combat since the introduction of high explosives in conventional warfare over a century ago, only recently has there been interest in understanding the biology and pathology of blast TBI and the potential long-term consequences. Progress made has been slow and there remain remarkably few robust human neuropathology studies in this field. This article provides a broad overview of the history of blast TBI and reviews the pathology described in the limitedscientific studies found in the literature

Han River Renaissance Project in Semiotics of Space

[Abstract] This paper aims to examine the direction and strategy of Han River Renaissance Project which the city authority of Seoul is trying to promote with a positive drive and to propose the direction to establish competitive identity of Han River, with theories and methodology in Space Semiotics. Recently urban places have won more and more academic concerns, especially focused on how to create cultural — aesthetic — symbolic value for the cities, naturally led to theories and methodology in Space Semiotics, which can be dealt to overcome conventional planning of formation and concept for the urban spaces so that makes new ideas and concepts for space identities. In detail this paper, centered on theories of Space Semiotics A. J. Greimas suggested, intends to analyze the identity of Han River the core space of Seoul and to propose a new idea for that: in historical-cultural context, bringing vestige the traditional values to the present that citizens, the main users and the real owners, have accumulated both on space and time line

PKM SOSIALISASI PICKLEBALL GURU PJOK KABUPATEN SIDRAP

    Get PDF

Jets, Disks and Spectral States of Black Holes

We show that outflow rates in jets directly depend on the spectral states of black holes. In particular, in soft states, when the Comptonized electrons are cold, outflow rate is close to zero. In hard states, outflow could be steady, but the rate may be very small -- only a few percent of the inflow. In the intermediate states, on the other hand, the outflow rate is the highest -- roughly thirty percent of the inflow. In this case, piled up matter below the sonic surface of the outflow could become optically thick and radiative processes could periodically cool the outflow and produce very interesting effects including transitions between burst (high-count or On) and quiescence (low-count or Off) states such as those observed in GRS 1915+105.Comment: Latex AIP Styl
