    The Maintenance and Preservation of Houses in the Traditional Residential Areas (Part1): Regarding Domestic Cleaning

    The folloeing results were revealed regarding the current status and changes in domestic cleaning, from the interviews conducted in the four traditional residential areas surveyed during 1985 through 1987. (1) Daily cleaning was carried out mainly on daily used rooms, and the span of the daily cleaned area tended to decrease. Except for "kado-haki" (house-front cleaning) in Kyoto, such cleaningjobs were carried out after breakfast. (2) Domestic cleaning was considered to be a duty and the concept of contracting progessionals from outside the household was unthinkable. (3) Since the residences built in the conventional construction method were surveyed, continuous cleaning habits generated luster in lumber used in the flooring, pillars and lattices, which made it easier to remove stains.     The following facts were revealed after interviewing the previous households on the awareness and current status of the maintenance and preservation of their residential exterior such as rooftops and outer walls. (1)By cleaning the outer walls or gutters, residents were able to become aware of any external deterioration or damage at an early stage. (2)Each household has their own trustworthy roof-repairer or carpenter serving them generation after generation, who will look after their residences and immediately repair any small damages. (3)The project to preserve groups of significant traditional constructions is effective in economically supporting the maintenance of such residences and also arousing the awareness in that respect. (4)Residents have the desire to continue living in such residences for a long period of time, and thus are concerned about its maintenance and preservation

    The Center Listening Test (CLT) is a high-stakes nationwide listening test. It has been administered since 2006 in the response to the decision of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), which has been looking for its positive washback on listening learning and teaching in Japanese high schools. This research attempted to investigate to what extent the CLT has motivated students to study listening, while focusing especially on the type of their university (national or private), their majors (English-related or not), and admissions (general or recommendation). It was found that the test has exerted positive influence on students\u27 motivation to learn listening to different degrees according to the categories listed above. Several suggestions to improve the test, such as balancing the scores between the CLT and the Center written test, are made

    Severe accidental colchicine poisoning by the autumn crocus: A case of successful treatment

    AbstractBackgroundThe common garden plant autumn crocus contains colchicine and its derivatives. Colchicine poisoning causes abdominal cramps and diarrhea within hours. Several days later, multiorgan failure, pancytopenia, and cardiovascular collapse occur.1,2 Severe colchicine poisoning is associated with high mortality.Case reportA 63-year-old woman who accidentally ingested an autumn crocus, which contained ∼0.38 mg colchicine, had severe vomiting and was taken to an emergency center. She presented with symptoms of gastroenterocolitis within 1 hour of ingestion, and bone marrow hypoplasia with pancytopenia developed on the 3rd day after ingestion. We continued administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (300 μg) for 5 days until we confirmed that the patient's white blood cell count was increasing. Also, there was focal and segmental intestinal ischemia and some cakes of charcoal remained in the intestinal tract. Therefore, we presumed that nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia was caused by hypotension with severe dehydration, although pseudo-obstruction due to the activated charcoal may have been a contributing factor. We were able to promptly intervene to treat paralytic ileus and gastrointestinal edema before anticipated worsening of abdominal compartment syndrome, by conducting open peritoneal drainage. Despite severe poisoning, our patient survived with intensive care. Conclusion: Colchicine intoxication may lead to a sudden and extreme critical course. Therefore, as there is no means to predict prognosis from initial severity of symptoms at onset, we suggest that all patients suspected of colchicine intoxication should be managed in hospital with continuous vital sign monitoring and frequent laboratory testing for at least a few days after ingestion

    A Subaru Search for Lyman-Alpha Emitters at z=5.8 with an Intermediate-Band Filter

    We present the results of a survey for Ly-alpha emitters at z ~ 5.8 using a new intermediate-band filter centered at lambda_c = 8275 AA with Delta-lambda_FWHM = 340 AA (i.e., the spectroscopic resolution is R ~ 23) with a combination with a traditional narrow-band centered at lambda_c = 8150 AA with Delta-lambda_FWHM = 120 AA (R ~ 68). Our observations were made with use of the Subaru Prime Focus Camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope in a sky area surrounding the high redshift quasar, SDSSp J104433.04-012522.2 at z=5.74, covering an effective sky area with ~ 720 arcmin^2. In this survey, we have found four Ly-alpha-emitter candidates from the intermediate-band image (z \~ 5.8 with Delta z ~ 0.3). Combined with our previous results based on the NB816 imaging, we discuss the star formation activity in galaxies between z ~ 5.7 and z ~ 5.9.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures.     Role of Sphingomyelinase in Infectious Diseases Caused by Bacillus cereus

    Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) is a pathogen in opportunistic infections. Here we show that Bacillus cereus sphingomyelinase (Bc-SMase) is a virulence factor for septicemia. Clinical isolates produced large amounts of Bc-SMase, grew in vivo, and caused death among mice, but ATCC strains isolated from soil did not. A transformant of the ATCC strain carrying a recombinant plasmid containing the Bc-SMase gene grew in vivo, but that with the gene for E53A, which has little enzymatic activity, did not. Administration of an anti-Bc-SMase antibody and immunization against Bc-SMase prevented death caused by the clinical isolates, showing that Bc-SMase plays an important role in the diseases caused by B. cereus. Treatment of mouse macrophages with Bc-SMase resulted in a reduction in the generation of H2O2 and phagocytosis of macrophages induced by peptidoglycan (PGN), but no effect on the release of TNF-α and little release of LDH under our experimental conditions. Confocal laser microscopy showed that the treatment of mouse macrophages with Bc-SMase resulted in the formation of ceramide-rich domains. A photobleaching analysis suggested that the cells treated with Bc-SMase exhibited a reduction in membrane fluidity. The results suggest that Bc-SMase is essential for the hydrolysis of SM in membranes, leading to a reduction in phagocytosis

    Nationwide retrospective observational study of idiopathic dendriform pulmonary ossification : clinical features with a progressive phenotype

    Background: Diffuse pulmonary ossification is a specific lung condition that is accompanied by underlying diseases. However, idiopathic dendriform pulmonary ossification (IDPO) is extremely rare, and the clinical features remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to report the clinical characteristics of IDPO. Methods: We conducted a nationwide survey of patients with IDPO from 2017 to 2019 in Japan and evaluated the clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings of patients diagnosed with IDPO. Results: Twenty-two cases of IDPO were identified. Most subjects (82%) were male, aged 22-56 years (mean (SD), 37.9 (9.1)) at diagnosis. Nearly 80% of the subjects were asymptomatic, and the condition was discovered during a medical check-up. However, 36% of the subjects showed a decline in forced vital capacity (%FVC) predicted <80% at diagnosis. The typical radiological features of high-resolution CT (HRCT) are calcified branching structures that are predominantly distributed in the lower lung fields without any other conspicuous finding. Histopathological analysis also showed dendriform ossified lesions from the intraluminal areas to interstitial areas. Notably, during the follow-up period of 20 years, disease progression was found in 88% on HRCT and more than 50% on pulmonary function tests (FVC and/or forced expiratory volume in 1s).
