IDENTIFICATION AND SEQUENCING BY NMR SPECTROSCOPY OF THE CARBOHYDRATE MOIETY IN A SAPONIN FROM Barringtonia asiatica
A trisaccharide chain in a saponin from the seeds of Barringtonia asiatica has been identified and sequenced as {[b-D-galactopyranosyl(1®3)- b-D-glucopyranosyl(1®2)]-b-D-glucuronopyranosyloxy} using a combination of homonuclear and heteronuclear correlation NMR spectroscopy. The 1H and 13C NMR signals of the sugar residues can be determined and distinguished from one other by use of the HMQC-TOCSY technique. Anomeric configurations were unambiguously assigned from the vicinal coupling constants 3JH-1,H-2 of the anomeric protons. Inter-glycosidic linkage assignments were elucidated using HMBC.

ISOLATION AND STRUCTURE DETERMINATION OF BISDEMTHYLAAPTAMINE FROM BUNAKEN MARINE PARK SPONGE <i>Aaptos, sp.</i>
Bisdemethylaaptamine, an alkaloid naphtyridine with molecular weight 200 and formulae molecule C11H8N2O2 has been isolated from Bunaken Marine Park sponge Aaptos sp. Isolation was done by using several stages of column chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Molecular weight of this naphtyridine alkaloid was determined by electron ionization (EI) and electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectroscopies and its structure assigned to be 8,9-dihydroxy-1H-benzo[d,e][1,6]naphtyridine by proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonances (1H and 13C-NMR).

A TRITERPENOID SAPONIN FROM SEEDS OF KOLOWE (<i>Chydenanthus excelsus</i>)
A triterpenoid saponin have been isolated from n-butanol fraction of the seeds of kolowe (Chydenanthus excelsus). The structure was determined as 3-O-[β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→3)-β-D-xylopyranosyl(1→3)- β - D-glucuronopyranosyloxy]- 22α -O-(2-methylbutiroyloxyolean-12-en-15α,16α,28-tri-hydroxy. Structure elucidation was accomplished by NMR (HMBC, HMQC/HSQC, ROE, ROESY, TOCSY) methods, ESIMS, and IR spectroscopic.

CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS FROM THE STEM BARK OF Alangium kurzi, Craib
Three new chemical constituents have been isolated from the stem bark of Alangium kurzii Craib. The structures were respectively determined to be 4-cyclohexene-1,2,3-triol 1, 3-β-stigmast-5-en-3-ol (β-sitosterol 2), and 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-stigmast-5-ene (daucosterol 3). These compounds are preliminary isolated from this plant.

ABSTRACT
A triterpene ester saponin has been isolated from the seed of Barringtonia asiatica and its structure has been established by extensive application of high-resolution FABMS and two dimensional NMR techniques to be 3-0-0-D-galactopyranosyl(1 â)3)-fl-D-glucopyranosyl(1â)2)H3-D-glucuronopyranosyloxy)- 22-0-(2-methylbutyroyloxy)-15,16,28-trihydroxy-(316,1 5a,16a,22a)-olean-12-ene.

BIODEGRADATION TEST ON THE LUBRICATING OIL IN THE FRESH AND SEA WATER OF THE BACTERIA FROM SOIL CONTAMINATED LUBRICATING OIL
Telah dilakukan penelitian degradasi minyak pelumas bekas oleh bakteri asal tanah yang terkontaminasi minyak pelumas bekas dalam media air tawar dan air laut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh isolat bakteri yang mempunyai kemampuan mendegradasi tinggi terhadap minyak pelumas bekas dalam media air tawar dan air laut. Bakteri hasil isolasi diidentifikasi dan diseleksi terhadap minyak pelumas bekas. Hasil seleksi diaklimatisasi untuk mendapatkan bakteri yang akan diuji pada media pelarut air laut. Hasil seleksi dan aklimatisasi memperlihatkan Arthobacter sp., Bacillus sp., dan Pseudomonas sp. mempunyai degradasi yang tinggi. Uji biodegradasi dilakukan dalam media Bushnell-Haas Gram Mineral dengan pelarut air tawar dan air laut dengan bakteri uji berupa kultur tunggal dan campuran. Hasil identifikasi ditemukan 10 isolat bakteri. Degradasi terbesar pada air laut adalah kultur tunggal Bacillus sp. (52.74%), sedangkan pada air tawar adalah pada kultur campuran Arthrobacter sp., Bacillus sp., dan Pseudomonas sp (37.3%)

α-Glucosidase Inhibitor Activity of some Indonesian Syzygium Extracts
The leaves and fruits of Indonesian Syzygium spp such as white pakoba, red pakoba and bombongan have been extracted by ethanol. The ethanolic extract was partitioned with polar solvent gradient using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol repeatedly. Each fraction was tested for antidiabetic activity and exhibited varying degrees of antidiabetic activity when tested with α-glucosidase method. Antidiabetic test indicated that the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions of the leaves of pakoba white, red pakoba and bombongan has potential as a source of active compounds
