Developing a Respect and Responsibility for All: Student Affairs Diversity and Inclusion Planning

    Get PDF
Opportunities for students to experience, reflect upon, and act from a commitment of justice, mercy, and compassion are not only important to a Catholic, liberal education; they are essential to educating the heart and mind. In the spirit of the Holy Cross tradition, the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Portland developed a three-year diversity and inclusion plan with staff and student leaders. It identifies strategic objectives and outcomes and includes suggested activities, an estimated budget, and an intended timeline. Presenters will share Insights, essential partnerships, and lessons around three strategic themes: professional and student staff development; diversity and inclusion staffing infrastructure; and inclusive campus environment. Attendees will leave with a planning framework to aid in the important work of preparing graduates to be thoughtful contributors in their communities and the world

Openings and Closings in Workplace Emails: How Do People Navigate without Clear Standards and Clearly Prescribed Formulae?

Languages vary when it comes to linguistic manifestations of formal politeness, but what particularly marks professional email communication is the flexibility of the genre compared to traditional, formal business letters. This poses the question of how individual email writers navigate without clear standards and clearly prescribed formulae. This study focuses on the individual email writer and, specifically, opening salutations and closing valedictions in 927Norwegian workplace emails, followed by metapragmatic interviews with their senders. In an egalitarian society with few explicit linguistic manifestations of formal politeness, individual choices of formulations provide a rich source of data. Linguistic content analysis reveals a significant degree of consistency in each person’s individual use, which indicates that when there are no commonly held norms, people make their own rules. The interviewees are aware ofwhich openings and closings they prefer, but often not why. Further analysis of the data reveals that hierarchical social distance is not a motivational factor, but the intentions to be either personally close or professionally distant are. Both are regarded as viable options in formal workplace emails by their users. However, the informants’ perception of which linguistic items represent these motivations depends on individual preferences rather than on any establishedor institutionalised practises. The latter is not a uniquely Norwegian problem, but concerns email correspondents in general because of the flexibility innate to the email genre

A modified sequence domain impedance definition and its equivalence to the dq-domain impedance definition for the stability analysis of AC power electronic systems

Representations of AC power systems by frequency dependent impedance equivalents is an emerging technique in the dynamic analysis of power systems including power electronic converters. The technique has been applied for decades in DC-power systems, and it was recently adopted to map the impedances in AC systems. Most of the work on AC systems can be categorized in two approaches. One is the analysis of the system in the \textit{dq}-domain, whereas the other applies harmonic linearization in the phase domain through symmetric components. Impedance models based on analytical calculations, numerical simulation and experimental studies have been previously developed and verified in both domains independently. The authors of previous studies discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each domain separately, but neither a rigorous comparison nor an attempt to bridge them has been conducted. The present paper attempts to close this gap by deriving the mathematical formulation that shows the equivalence between the \textit{dq}-domain and the sequence domain impedances. A modified form of the sequence domain impedance matrix is proposed, and with this definition the stability estimates obtained with the Generalized Nyquist Criterion (GNC) become equivalent in both domains. The second contribution of the paper is the definition of a \textit{Mirror Frequency Decoupled} (MFD) system. The analysis of MFD systems is less complex than that of non-MFD systems because the positive and negative sequences are decoupled. This paper shows that if a system is incorrectly assumed to be MFD, this will lead to an erroneous or ambiguous estimation of the equivalent impedance

    Depth-dependent varation in soft-bottom fauna

Depth is an important variable influencing soft-bottom-fauna communities. Lowest diversities were found at depths shallower than 40 m, probably due to stronger fluctuations in environmental factors. Maximum diversities were found at 65-115 m depth. The decline in diversity deeper than 100 m may be caused by different food supply and more homogenous silt/clay type of sediment, offering fewer niches. Great differences were found between different species. Most species showed a preference to either deep or shallow depths

‘Typically Norwegian to be impolite.’ Impoliteness according to whom?

    Get PDF
This article discusses claims by immigrants in Norway that Norwegians are impolite from the book entitled, Typically Norwegian to Be Impolite? (Aambø, 2005). These claims are compared with other sources and discussed using theories primarily from linguistic politeness research. The overall aim of the article is to add to the limited research on (im)politeness in Norway and to increase awareness of Norwegian behavioural and communicative norms about (im)politeness. The study finds that some of the behaviour that foreigners deem impolite is considered impolite by many Norwegians too. Other behaviour, it is suggested, is not generated by indifference to politeness or an intent to be impolite, but rather, the opposite: to show consideration through a ‘distance rule of politeness’ that respects others’ autonomy and personal space. Concrete manifestations are not disturbing people with excessive talk, especially those one does not know well; not disturbing people with things one can manage on one’s own; not disturbing people by taking up their time; and, for shop assistants, not disturbing customers who have not asked for help. Verbal forms of politeness become less important when it is considered more polite not to talk at all unless one has something ‘proper’ (i.e. truthful, informational) to say
