    Decay Phase Cooling and Inferred Heating of M- and X-class Solar Flares

    In this paper, the cooling of 72 M- and X-class flares is examined using GOES/XRS and SDO/EVE. The observed cooling rates are quantified and the observed total cooling times are compared to the predictions of an analytical 0-D hydrodynamic model. It is found that the model does not fit the observations well, but does provide a well defined lower limit on a flare's total cooling time. The discrepancy between observations and the model is then assumed to be primarily due to heating during the decay phase. The decay phase heating necessary to account for the discrepancy is quantified and found be ~50% of the total thermally radiated energy as calculated with GOES. This decay phase heating is found to scale with the observed peak thermal energy. It is predicted that approximating the total thermal energy from the peak is minimally affected by the decay phase heating in small flares. However, in the most energetic flares the decay phase heating inferred from the model can be several times greater than the peak thermal energy.Comment: Published in the Astrophysical Journal, 201

    This study sat within a national project aimed at demonstrating that expert knowledge housed within universities can make a positive impact in urban communities around four themes: Community Cohesion, Crime, Enterprise and Health & Wellbeing. It involved the Universities of Salford, Northumbria, Central Lancashire, Manchester Metropolitan University and Bradford. The project aimed to address key urban regeneration challenges in the North of England through inter-disciplinary collaboration between partner universities and practitioner organisations. It also sought to build a long term strategic alliance between core university partners. Within each of the four project areas there were a number of smaller projects each focusing on the relationship between the theme and urban regeneration. This study sought to establish how partnership boards for older people address the health and well being needs of people over 50 years of age including how health and wellbeing are defined; strategies older people adopt to change service providers' actions; learning by service providers about the involvement of older people on Boards; and how this influences practice. The main activity within this study was to interview Salford Partnership Board members. The findings informed further development of the Board

    It is hypothesized that the A ^1B_1 <- X ^1A' excitation into the dipole-bound state of the cyanomethyl anion (CH2CN-) is proposed as the carrier for one diffuse interstellar band. However, this particular molecular system has not been detected in the interstellar medium even though the related cyanomethyl radical and the isoelectronic ketenimine molecule have been found. In this study we are employing the use of proven quartic force fields and second-order vibrational perturbation theory to compute accurate spectroscopic constants and fundamental vibrational frequencies for ^1A' CH2CN- in order to assist in laboratory studies and astronomical observations

    Realization of an all-optical zero to π cross-phase modulation jump

    We report on the experimental demonstration of an all-optical π cross-phase modulation jump. By performing a preselection, an optically induced unitary transformation, and then a postselection on the polarization degree of freedom, the phase of the output beam acquires either a zero or π phase shift (with no other possible values). The postselection results in optical loss in the output beam. An input state may be chosen near the resulting phase singularity, yielding a pi phase shift even for weak interaction strengths.     Monitoring of nitrogen leaching on a dairy farm during four drainage seasons

    peer-reviewedThe authors acknowledge funding from the Environmental Protection Agency and Teagasc under the 2000–2006 RTDI programme.The effect of four commonly used dairy farm management systems (treatments), on nitrogen leaching to 1 m was studied over a 4-year period from October 2001 to April 2005. The treatments were (i) grazed plots receiving dirty water, (ii) 2-cut silage plots receiving slurry, (iii) grazed plots and (iv) 1-cut silage plots receiving slurry. All plots had fertiliser N applied; the soil was free-draining overlying fissured limestone. Mean 4-year N input (kg/ha) was 319 and mean annual stocking density was ~2.38 LU/ha. The annual average and weekly NO3-N and NH4-N concentrations in drainage water were analysed for all years, using a repeated measures analysis. For the annual NO3-N data, there was an interaction between treatment and year (P < 0.001). There were significant differences (P < 0.05) in NO3-N concentrations between the treatments in all years except the third. For the NH4-N data there was no interaction between treatment and year or main effect of treatment but there were differences between years (P < 0.01). Mean weekly concentrations were analysed separately for each year. For NO3-N, in all years but the third, there was an interaction between treatment and week (P < 0.001); this occurred with NH4-N, in all 4 years. Dirty water was significantly higher than grazed-fertiliser only and 1-cut silage in NO3-N concentrations in 2001–02; in 2002–03, dirty water and 2-cut silage were significantly higher than the other treatments; while in 2004–05, dirty water and grazed-fertiliser only were significantly higher than the other two treatments.     Radiation-reaction-induced evolution of circular orbits of particles around Kerr Black Holes

    It is demonstrated that, in the adiabatic approximation, non-Equatorial circular orbits of particles in the Kerr metric (i.e. orbits of constant Boyer-Lindquist radius) remain circular under the influence of gravitational radiation reaction.     Simplicity in simplicial phase space

    A key point in the spin foam approach to quantum gravity is the implementation of simplicity constraints in the partition functions of the models. Here, we discuss the imposition of these constraints in a phase space setting corresponding to simplicial geometries. On the one hand, this could serve as a starting point for a derivation of spin foam models by canonical quantisation. On the other, it elucidates the interpretation of the boundary Hilbert space that arises in spin foam models. More precisely, we discuss different versions of the simplicity constraints, namely gauge-variant and gauge-invariant versions. In the gauge-variant version, the primary and secondary simplicity constraints take a similar form to the reality conditions known already in the context of (complex) Ashtekar variables. Subsequently, we describe the effect of these primary and secondary simplicity constraints on gauge-invariant variables. This allows us to illustrate their equivalence to the so-called diagonal, cross and edge simplicity constraints, which are the gauge-invariant versions of the simplicity constraints. In particular, we clarify how the so-called gluing conditions arise from the secondary simplicity constraints. Finally, we discuss the significance of degenerate configurations, and the ramifications of our work in a broader setting.Comment: Typos and references correcte

    Evidence of a Plasmoid-Looptop Interaction and Magnetic Inflows During a Solar Flare/CME Eruptive Event

    Observational evidence is presented for the merging of a downward-propagating plasmoid with a looptop kernel during an occulted limb event on 2007 January 25. RHESSI lightcurves in the 9-18 keV energy range, as well as that of the 245 MHz channel of the Learmonth Solar Observatory, show enhanced nonthermal emission in the corona at the time of the merging suggesting that additional particle acceleration took place. This was attributed to a secondary episode of reconnection in the current sheet that formed between the two merging sources. RHESSI images were used to establish a mean downward velocity of the plasmoid of 12 km/s. Complementary observations from the SECCHI suite of instruments onboard STEREO-Behind showed that this process occurred during the acceleration phase of the associated CME. From wavelet-enhanced EUVI, images evidence of inflowing magnetic field lines prior to the CME eruption is also presented. The derived inflow velocity was found to be 1.5 km/s.
