The popular music heritage of the Dutch pirates: illegal radio and cultural identity
This article explores how cultural identities are negotiated in relation to the heritage of illegal radio in the Netherlands. The term âpirate radioâ commonly refers to the offshore radio stations that were broadcasting during the 1960s. These stations introduced commercial radio and popular music genres like beat music, which were not played by public broadcasters at the time. In their wake, land-based pirates began broadcasting for local audiences. This study examines the identities that are constituted by the narrative of pirate radio. Drawing on in-depth interviews with archivists, fans and broadcasters, this article explores the connection between pirate radio, popular music heritage and cultural identity. Moreover, it considers how new technologies such as internet radio provide platforms to engage with this heritage and thus to maintain these local identities. Tracking magnetic bright point motions through the solar atmosphere
High-cadence, multiwavelength observations and simulations are employed for the analysis of solar photospheric magnetic bright points (MBPs) in the quiet Sun. The observations were obtained with the Rapid Oscillations in the Solar Atmosphere (ROSA) imager and the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer at the Dunn Solar Telescope. Our analysis reveals that photospheric MBPs have an average transverse velocity of approximately 1 km sâ1, whereas their chromospheric counterparts have a slightly higher average velocity of 1.4 km sâ1. Additionally, chromospheric MBPs were found to be around 63 per cent larger than the equivalent photospheric MBPs. These velocity values were compared with the output of numerical simulations generated using the MURAM code. The simulated results were similar, but slightly elevated, when compared to the observed data. An average velocity of 1.3 km sâ1 was found in the simulated G-band images and an average of 1.8 km sâ1 seen in the velocity domain at a height of 500 km above the continuum formation layer. Delays in the change of velocities were also analysed. Average delays of âŒ4 s between layers of the simulated data set were established and values of âŒ29 s observed between G-band and Ca II K ROSA observations. The delays in the simulations are likely to be the result of oblique granular shock waves, whereas those found in the observations are possibly the result of a semi-rigid flux tube
Searching for Planets in the Hyades II: Some Implications of Stellar Magnetic Activity
The Hyades constitute a homogeneous sample of stars ideal for investigating
the dependence of planet formation on the mass of the central star. Due to
their youth, Hyades members are much more chromospherically active than stars
traditionally surveyed for planets using high precision radial velocity (RV)
techniques. Therefore, we have conducted a detailed investigation of whether
magnetic activity of our Hyades target stars will interfere with our ability to
make precise RV searches for substellar companions. We measure chromospheric
activity (which we take as a proxy for magnetic activity) by computing the
equivalent of the R'HK activity index from the Ca II K line. is not
constant in the Hyades: we confirm that it decreases with increasing
temperature in the F stars, and also find it decreases for stars cooler than
mid-K. We examine correlations between simultaneously measured R'HK and RV
using both a classical statistical test and a Bayesian odds ratio test. We find
that there is a significant correlation between R'HK and the RV in only 5 of
the 82 stars in this sample. Thus, simple Rprime HK-RV correlations will
generally not be effective in correcting the measured RV values for the effects
of magnetic activity in the Hyades. We argue that this implies long timescale
activity variations (of order a few years; i.e., magnetic cycles or growth and
decay of plage regions) will not significantly hinder our search for planets in
the Hyades if the stars are closely monitored for chromospheric activity. The
trends in the RV scatter (sigma'_v) with , vsini, and P_rot for our stars
is generally consistent with those found in field stars in the Lick planet
search data, with the notable exception of a shallower dependence of sigma'_v

Quantitative CT: Associations between Emphysema, Airway Wall Thickness and Body Composition in COPD
The objective of the present study was to determine the association between CT phenotypesâemphysema by low attenuation area and bronchitis by airway wall thicknessâand body composition parameters in a large cohort of subjects with and without COPD. In 452 COPD subjects and 459 subjects without COPD, CT scans were performed to determine emphysema (%LAA), airway wall thickness (AWT-Pi10), and lung mass. Muscle wasting based on FFMI was assessed by bioelectrical impedance. In both the men and women with COPD, FFMI was negatively associated with %LAA. FMI was positively associated with AWT-Pi10 in both subjects with and without COPD. Among the subjects with muscle wasting, the percentage emphysema was high, but the predictive value was moderate. In conclusion, the present study strengthens the hypothesis that the subgroup of COPD cases with muscle wasting have emphysema. Rationale, design and conduct of a randomised controlled trial evaluating a primary care-based complex intervention to improve the quality of life of heart failure patients: HICMan (Heidelberg Integrated Case Management) : study protocol
Background: Chronic congestive heart failure (CHF) is a complex disease with rising prevalence, compromised quality of life (QoL), unplanned hospital admissions, high mortality and therefore high burden of illness. The delivery of care for these patients has been criticized and new strategies addressing crucial domains of care have been shown to be effective on patients' health outcomes, although these trials were conducted in secondary care or in highly organised Health Maintenance Organisations. It remains unclear whether a comprehensive primary care-based case management for the treating general practitioner (GP) can improve patients' QoL. Methods/Design: HICMan is a randomised controlled trial with patients as the unit of randomisation. Aim is to evaluate a structured, standardized and comprehensive complex intervention for patients with CHF in a 12-months follow-up trial. Patients from intervention group receive specific patient leaflets and documentation booklets as well as regular monitoring and screening by a prior trained practice nurse, who gives feedback to the GP upon urgency. Monitoring and screening address aspects of disease-specific selfmanagement, (non)pharmacological adherence and psychosomatic and geriatric comorbidity. GPs are invited to provide a tailored structured counselling 4 times during the trial and receive an additional feedback on pharmacotherapy relevant to prognosis (data of baseline documentation). Patients from control group receive usual care by their GPs, who were introduced to guidelineoriented management and a tailored health counselling concept. Main outcome measurement for patients' QoL is the scale physical functioning of the SF-36 health questionnaire in a 12-month follow-up. Secondary outcomes are the disease specific QoL measured by the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy questionnaire (KCCQ), depression and anxiety disorders (PHQ-9, GAD-7), adherence (EHFScBS and SANA), quality of care measured by an adapted version of the Patient Chronic Illness Assessment of Care questionnaire (PACIC) and NTproBNP. In addition, comprehensive clinical data are collected about health status, comorbidity, medication and health care utilisation. Discussion: As the targeted patient group is mostly cared for and treated by GPs, a comprehensive primary care-based guideline implementation including somatic, psychosomatic and organisational aspects of the delivery of care (HICMAn) is a promising intervention applying proven strategies for optimal care. GJ 900: A new hierarchical system with low-mass components
Speckle interferometric observations made with the 6 m telescope of the
Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2000
revealed the triple nature of the nearby ( mas)
low-mass young ( Myr) star GJ 900. The configuration of the triple
system allowed it to be dynamically unstable. Differential photometry performed
from 2000 through 2004 yielded - and -band absolute magnitudes and
spectral types for the components to be =6.660.08,
=9.150.11, =10.080.26, =4.840.08,
=6.760.20, =7.390.31, K5--K7,
M3--M4, M5--M6. The ``mass--luminosity''
relation is used to estimate the individual masses of the components:

. From the observations of the
components relative motion in the period 2000--2006, we conclude that GJ 900 is
a hierarchical triple star with the possible orbital periods
P80 yrs and P20 yrs. An analysis of the 2MASS
images of the region around GJ 900 leads us to suggest that the system can

The system parameters of DW Ursae Majoris
We present new constraints on the system parameters of the SW Sextantis star
DW Ursae Majoris, based on ultraviolet (UV) eclipse observations with the
Hubble Space Telescope. Our data were obtained during a low state of the
system, in which the UV light was dominated by the hot white dwarf (WD)
primary. Eclipse analysis, using the full Roche lobe geometry, allows us to set
firm limits on the masses and radii of the system components and the distance
between them: 0.67 \leq M_1/M_sun \leq 1.06, 0.008 \leq R_1/R_sun \leq 0.014,
M_2/M_sun > 0.16, R_2/R_sun > 0.28 and a/R_sun > 1.05. For q = M_2/M_1 < 1.5
the inclination must satisfy i > 71 degrees. Using Smith & Dhillon's
mass-period relation for CV secondaries, our estimates for the system
parameters become M_1/M_sun = 0.77 \pm 0.07, R_1/R_sun = 0.012 \pm 0.001,
M_2/M_sun = 0.30 \pm 0.10, R_2/R_sun = 0.34 \pm 0.04, q =0.39 \pm 0.12, i = 82
\pm 4 degrees and a/R_sun = 1.14 \pm 0.06. We have also estimated the spectral
type of the secondary, M3.5 \pm 1.0, and distance to the system, d =930 \pm 160
pc, from time-resolved I- and K-band photometry. Finally, we have repeated
Knigge et al.'s WD model atmosphere fit to the low-state UV spectrum of DW UMa
in order to account for the higher surface gravity indicated by our eclipse
analysis. In this way we obtained a second estimate for the distance, d = 590
\pm 100 pc, which allows us to obtain a second estimate for the spectral type
of the secondary, M7 \pm 2.0. We conclude that the true value for the distance
and spectral type will probably be in between the values obtained by the two

Polygenic liability for schizophrenia and childhood adversity influences dailyâlife emotion dysregulation and psychosis proneness
Objective To test whether polygenic risk score for schizophrenia (PRS-S) interacts with childhood adversity and daily-life stressors to influence momentary mental state domains (negative affect, positive affect, and subtle psychosis expression) and stress-sensitivity measures.
Methods The data were retrieved from a general population twin cohort including 593 adolescents and young adults. Childhood adversity was assessed using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Daily-life stressors and momentary mental state domains were measured using ecological momentary assessment. PRS-S was trained on the latest Psychiatric Genetics Consortium schizophrenia meta-analysis. The analyses were conducted using multilevel mixed-effects tobit regression models.
Results Both childhood adversity and daily-life stressors were associated with increased negative affect, decreased positive affect, and increased subtle psychosis expression, while PRS-S was only associated with increased positive affect. No gene-environment correlation was detected. There is novel evidence for interaction effects between PRS-S and childhood adversity to influence momentary mental states [negative affect (b = 0.07, P = 0.013), positive affect (b = -0.05, P = 0.043), and subtle psychosis expression (b = 0.11, P = 0.007)] and stress-sensitivity measures.
Conclusion Exposure to childhood adversities, particularly in individuals with high PRS-S, is pleiotropically associated with emotion dysregulation and psychosis proneness
Some Like it Hot: The X-Ray Emission of The Giant Star YY Mensae
(Abridged abstract) We present an analysis of the X-ray emission of the
rapidly rotating giant star YY Mensae observed by Chandra HETGS and XMM-Newton.
Although no obvious flare was detected, the X-ray luminosity changed by a
factor of two between the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations taken 4 months
apart. The coronal abundances and the emission measure distribution have been
derived from three different methods using optically thin collisional
ionization equilibrium models. The abundances show an inverse first ionization
potential (FIP) effect. We further find a high N abundance which we interpret
as a signature of material processed in the CNO cycle. The corona is dominated
by a very high temperature (20-40 MK) plasma, which places YY Men among the
magnetically active stars with the hottest coronae. Lower temperature plasma
also coexists, albeit with much lower emission measure. Line broadening is
reported, which we interpret as Doppler thermal broadening, although rotational
broadening due to X-ray emitting material high above the surface could be
present as well. We use two different formalisms to discuss the shape of the
emission measure distribution. The first one infers the properties of coronal
loops, whereas the second formalism uses flares as a statistical ensemble. We
find that most of the loops in the corona of YY Men have their maximum
temperature equal to or slightly larger than about 30 MK. We also find that
small flares could contribute significantly to the coronal heating in YY Men.
Although there is no evidence of flare variability in the X-ray light curves,
we argue that YY Men's distance and X-ray brightness does not allow us to
detect flares with peak luminosities Lx <= 10^{31} erg/s with current

Irradiation of the secondary star in X-ray Nova Scorpii 1994 (=GRO J1655--40)
We have obtained intermediate resolution optical spectra of the black-hole
candidate Nova Sco 1994 in June 1996, when the source was in an X-ray/optical
active state (R~15.05). We measure the radial velocity curve of the secondary
star and obtain a semi-amplitude of 279+/-10 km/s; a value which is 30 per cent
larger than the value obtained when the source is in quiescence. Our large
value for K_2 is consistent with 60 +9,-7 per cent of the secondary star's
surface being heated; compared to 35 per cent, which is what one would expect
if only the inner face of the secondary star were irradiated. Effects such as
irradiation-induced flows on the secondary star may be important in explaining
