Die Autorin vertritt die These, dass die Perspektive der Kamera in den meisten Filmen einen - häufig voyeuristischen - "männlichen Blick" reproduziert. Auch entspreche die Rolle der meisten Filmhelden einer stereotypen Männlichkeit und biete damit kaum Identifikationsraum für Zuschauerinnen. Non-linear properties of supercooled liquids in the system Na2O---SiO2

The physical properties, viscosity, density, heat capacity and thermal expansivity, of relaxed supercooled liquids in the temperature range just above the glass transition have been determined for ten compositions along the compositional binary Na2O---SiO2, in the range of 2–45 mole% Na2O, by a combination of scanning calorimetry, dilatometry and micropenetration viscometry. The viscosity, density, heat capacity and thermal expansivity in the glassy state have also been determined. The heat capacities illustrate a linear composition dependence for the glassy state and a smooth but strongly non-linear composition dependence for the supercooled liquid state. The thermal expansivities were determined by dilatometry up to the glass transition and, by a normalized comparison of relaxation behavior in the glass transition interval, to temperatures 50°C above the glass transition. The expansivity is a linear function of the molar composition in the glass but a strongly non-linear function of molar composition in the supercooled liquid. The viscosity data just above the glass transition temperature, combined with data from high temperature using the concentric cylinder method, illustrate that the composition dependence of viscosity is strongly non-linear and exhibits an inflection as a function of composition. The glass transition temperature, taken as the peak temperature of the calorimetric measurements, is not in general an isokom in this system. The data for these property determinations in the Na2O---SiO2 system provide much improved constraints on the partial molar properties of SiO2 liquid and partial molar properties of the SiO2 component in silicate melts. The complex behavior of the transport properties, i.e. the glass transition temperature and the viscosity, point to complexities in viscous flow beyond that of simple binary mixing of the Na2O and SiO2 components

Deutschland 1998/99 - Binnennachfrage stärkt Aufschwung

Der Aufsatz analysiert und prognostiziert die konjunkturelle Entwicklung in Deutschland und im Euroraum in ausführlicher Form für das laufende Jahr 1998 und das Folgejahr 1999. Die Impulse aus dem Ausland bleiben im Prognosezeitraum kräftig, auch wenn sie infolge der negativen Auswirkungen, die direkt und indirekt auf den deutschen Export von der Ausbreitung des Krisenherdes in Asien ausgehen, an Stärke verlieren. Die Binnenkonjunktur wird 1998 als Antriebskraft der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Produktion gegenüber der Auslandsnachfrage an Bedeutung gewinnen und im Jahr 1999 in etwa mit ihr gleichziehen. In Ostdeutschland wird dabei die Schwächephase langsam überwunden, so dass im Jahr 1999 hinsichtlich der Wachstumsdynamik fast wieder zu Westdeutschland aufgeschlossen werden kann. Die Kräftigung des konjunkturellen Aufschwungs zeigt auch erste Spuren am Arbeitsmarkt, vor allem in Westdeutschland.

TP53-inducible Glycolysis and Apoptosis Regulator (TIGAR) Metabolically Reprograms Carcinoma and Stromal Cells in Breast Cancer.

A subgroup of breast cancers has several metabolic compartments. The mechanisms by which metabolic compartmentalization develop in tumors are poorly characterized. TP53 inducible glycolysis and apoptosis regulator (TIGAR) is a bisphosphatase that reduces glycolysis and is highly expressed in carcinoma cells in the majority of human breast cancers. Hence we set out to determine the effects of TIGAR expression on breast carcinoma and fibroblast glycolytic phenotype and tumor growth. The overexpression of this bisphosphatase in carcinoma cells induces expression of enzymes and transporters involved in the catabolism of lactate and glutamine. Carcinoma cells overexpressing TIGAR have higher oxygen consumption rates and ATP levels when exposed to glutamine, lactate, or the combination of glutamine and lactate. Coculture of TIGAR overexpressing carcinoma cells and fibroblasts compared with control cocultures induce more pronounced glycolytic differences between carcinoma and fibroblast cells. Carcinoma cells overexpressing TIGAR have reduced glucose uptake and lactate production. Conversely, fibroblasts in coculture with TIGAR overexpressing carcinoma cells induce HIF (hypoxia-inducible factor) activation with increased glucose uptake, increased 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase-3 (PFKFB3), and lactate dehydrogenase-A expression. We also studied the effect of this enzyme on tumor growth. TIGAR overexpression in carcinoma cells increases tumor growth in vivo with increased proliferation rates. However, a catalytically inactive variant of TIGAR did not induce tumor growth. Therefore, TIGAR expression in breast carcinoma cells promotes metabolic compartmentalization and tumor growth with a mitochondrial metabolic phenotype with lactate and glutamine catabolism. Targeting TIGAR warrants consideration as a potential therapy for breast cancer

Individual health services

Background: The German statutory health insurance (GKV) reimburses all health care services that are deemed sufficient, appropriate, and efficient. According to the German Medical Association (BÄK), individual health services (IGeL) are services that are not under liability of the GKV, medically necessary or recommendable or at least justifiable. They have to be explicitly requested by the patient and have to be paid out of pocket. Research questions: The following questions regarding IGeL in the outpatient health care of GKV insurants are addressed in the present report: What is the empirical evidence regarding offers, utilization, practice, acceptance, and the relation between physician and patient, as well as the economic relevance of IGeL? What ethical, social, and legal aspects are related to IGeL? For two of the most common IGeL, the screening for glaucoma and the screening for ovarian and endometrial cancer by vaginal ultrasound (VUS), the following questions are addressed: What is the evidence for the clinical effectiveness? Are there sub-populations for whom screening might be beneficial? Methods: The evaluation is divided into two parts. For the first part a systematic literature review of primary studies and publications concerning ethical, social and legal aspects is performed. In the second part, rapid assessments of the clinical effectiveness for the two examples, glaucoma and VUS screening, are prepared. Therefore, in a first step, HTA-reports and systematic reviews are searched, followed by a search for original studies published after the end of the research period of the most recent HTA-report included. Results: 29 studies were included for the first question. Between 19 and 53% of GKV members receive IGeL offers, of which three-quarters are realised. 16 to 19% of the insurants ask actively for IGeL. Intraocular tension measurement is the most common single IGeL service, accounting for up to 40% of the offers. It is followed by ultrasound assessments with up to 25% of the offers. Cancer screening and blood or laboratory services are also frequent and represent a major proportion of the demand. The ethical, social, and legal aspects discussed in the context of IGeL concern eight subject areas: 1. autonomous patient decisions versus obtrusion, 2. commercialization of medicine, 3. duty of patient information, 4. benefit, evidence, and (quality) control, 5. role and relation of physicians and patients, 6. relation to the GKV, 7. social inequality, 8. formally correct performance. For glaucoma screening, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) is identified that shows a patient relevant benefit. For VUS three RCT are included. However, they do not yet present mortality data concerning screened and non-screened persons. VUS screening shows a high degree of over-diagnosis in turn leading to invasive interventions. To diagnose one invasive carcinoma, 30 to 35 surgical procedures are necessary. Conclusion: IGeL are a relevant factor in the German statutory health care system. To provide more transparency, the requests for evidence-based and independent patient information should be considered. Whether official positive and negative-lists could be an appropriate instrument to give guidance to patients and physicians, should be examined. Generally, IGeL must be seen in the broader context of the discussions about the future design and development of the German health care system

Mit dem Jahresausblick für 1998 wird die ausführliche Konjunkturprognose von Mitte 1997 für das Jahr 1998 aktualisiert. Der konjunkturelle Aufschwung, der sich im ersten Halbjahr 1997 beschleunigt hatte, setzte sich im weiteren Verlauf des Jahres verlangsamt, aber stetig fort. Im Jahr 1998 wird der Aufschwung in Deutschland an Breite gewinnen. Lediglich die Bauinvestitionen erholen sich noch nicht, alle anderen Bereiche der Binnennachfrage nehmen verstärkt zu. Deutlich expandieren erneut die Exporte, die vor allem von der weiterhin günstigen Weltkonjunktur profitieren.

Zu Beginn der dritten Phase der Europäischen Währungsunion sind die konjunkturellen Rahmenbedingungen überwiegend positiv. Das niedrige Zinsniveau wirkt anregend, die zu erwartenden, im Rahmen des Verteilungsspielraums bleibenden Lohnabschlüsse tragen zum ruhigen Preisklima bei, die Finanzpolitik wirkt nicht mehr restriktiv. Bei zunehmenden binnenwirtschaftlichen Impulsen verstärkt sich die Führungsrolle der Inlandsnachfrage unter den Auftriebskräften 1999. Bei fortgesetztem Produktionsanstieg verbessert sich die Lage am Arbeitsmarkt 1999 weiter, am ersten Arbeitsmarkt allerdings nur in Westdeutschland.
