Examining the Effects of Realistic Recruitment on Work-Family Conflict: A Test of the Mediating Role of Expectations.

This research considered how the realistic recruitment practices of Realistic Job Preview (RJP) and Expectation Lowering Procedure (ELP) may assist employees in reducing perceptions of Work-Family Conflict (WFC). This relationship was theorized as indirect, with Met Expectations mediating the relationship between realistic recruitment and WFC. As such, the current research sheds new light on a protective antecedent of WFC. Furthermore, the disposition of work-family centrality was tested also hypothesized to moderate the relationship between realistic recruitment and Met Expectations. Three studies were conducted in order to empirically test the hypothesized relationships. Study 1 was a cross-sectional survey utilizing a broad sample of working adults. Study 2 sampled employees of a public school district in the Southeastern United States using a similar cross-sectional survey to Study 1. Study 3, also using a broad sample of working adults, was experimental in nature and randomly assigned participants to one of four conditions. Results across all three studies provide initial support for RJP and ELP being protective antecedents of WFC. That is, those individuals who received a realistic recruitment tended to have fewer perceptions of WFC. This relationship was found to be both full mediated through Met Expectations (Study 1) and partially mediated via Met Expectations (Study 2). Implications for theory, practice, and future research are discussed

Complex Oxide Thin Films from Perovskite to Pyrochlore

The world of condensed matter physics is a fascinating field. With all of the many different elements to explore, it seems impossible to discover all of their secrets. Nevertheless, a study of two different materials is covered in this work. The first type of materials are the Perovskites; these materials are commonly used in materials research, but still have hidden treasures left for research scientist to explore. The second type of materials are the Pyrochlores. The Pyrochlores are not as widely studied as the Perovskite materials, thus, leaving even more avenues to venture down in the quest to learn the ways of nature and the properties of these materials. In this work, the valence electron states and the magnetic properties of the Perovskite LMO on STO are reported with the samples varying in thickness from 3 – unit cells to 12 – unit cells were measured and the results reported for their XAS measurements. In addition, the growth of the Pyrochlore YTO on YSZ are, also, investigated using XRD and differing growth conditions to ascertain the ideal growth conditions for the material. Furthermore, an overview of the experimental techniques is included to assist in understanding the results of this thesis. Finally, a summary of the results and an outlook for future work is included

Symptomatic adrenal insufficiency, presenting as hypoglycaemia or poor weight gain, may occur on withdrawal of corticosteroid treatment but has not previously been reported during inhaled corticosteroid treatment. This case series illustrates the occurence of clinically significant adrenal insufficiency in asthmatic children while patients were on inhaled corticosteroid treatment and the unexpected modes of presentation. Economic feasibility of shipping containers through the Arctic

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 51).As the Arctic ice cover continues to retreat, the possibility of regular transit through the Arctic becomes an increasing reality. Liner companies could take advantage of distance savings (up to 4000 nautical miles less than existing routes) available from transit through the Arctic by offering faster port-to-port voyage times while simultaneously reducing voyage expenses. The purpose of the study is to investigate the economic feasibility of a liner service with shipping routes through the Arctic. To accomplish this, information pertaining to Arctic conditions, containerships and icebreakers, and container ports was collected and used to build a model that estimates the expense and time of port-to-port voyages through the Arctic. Different combinations of vessels, routes, and speeds through the Arctic were evaluated with the model. The expense and time of the Arctic voyages were then compared to the equivalent existing liner routes. The likelihood of year-round reliable containership service through the Arctic in the future depends on one's perspective. One the one hand, it won't happen for decades due to the presence of ice. Current predictions of a largely ice-free Arctic range from 2030 to later than 2100. On the other hand, if some favorable assumptions are made, it deserves serious consideration once minimally ice-strengthened containerships are able to be reliably escorted through the Arctic at a speed of 10kts.by Russell Pollock.S.M

Investigation of stabilized Berea Red soil with emphasis on tensile and cyclic triaxial tests

Includes bibliographical references.This dissertation investigates the soil mechanical properties of a sample of Berea Red soil and the most suitable methods of treatment to improve it. Special attention has been paid to lime stabilization and different curing techniques. Gradings, special indicators and California Bearing Ratios were determined on both natural and lime stabilized Berea Red soil. Consolidometer tests were performed on natural and lime or cement stabilized soil at various densities to establish the compressibility and collapse potential. A computer controlled Indirect Tensile Testing with data logging facilities was developed in apparatus order that some of the soil mechanical properties of Berea Red soil may be determined. Natural and stabilized Berea Red soil was tested in a monotonic and cyclic triaxial apparatus to determine the short and long stress strain characteristics

Ethical Leadership: Not Everyone Responds Equally

Theoretical frameworks associated with ethical leadership have not fully considered the nature of the leader–follower exchange, and, in addition, few studies have considered the impact of follower individual differences in reactions to ethical leadership. Our research extends the customary social exchange perspective of transactional and relational resources by accounting for the ideological resources (i.e., value-oriented principles) that can also imbue the leader–subordinate relationship. Second, differences in equity sensitivity are hypothesized to moderate the influence of ethical leadership on employee attachment to the organization. We predicted that the impact of ethical leadership on organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and organizational identification is greater for individuals with a more benevolent orientation. In Study 1 (N = 223), equity sensitivity moderated the influence of ethical leadership on organizational commitment and organizational identification. In Study 2 (N = 244), an interactive effect was found for the outcomes of organizational commitment and job satisfaction. This case describes the difficult challenges facing Beverly Matthews as she returned to the workforce after taking time from paid employment in order to spend time with her two children. She desired a workplace that would give her the flexibility to excel in both the work and family domains. Beverly specifically chose the organization because of its award-winning family-friendly reputation and the positive word of mouth from a friend who worked there. Unfortunately, she has encountered a supervisor whose values conflict with the values of Beverly and the organization. Beverly is contemplating her options as the status quo has become intolerable. Readers are also presented with a teaching note as an accompaniment to the case.
