Additions and revisions to the checklist of fishes of the Capricorn-Bunker Group Great Barrier Reef Australia
Additions to the checklist of fishes of the Capricornia Section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Australia, bring the total number of species recorded from the area to 920. These include 60 species and 11 families not previously reported, and 3 species are new records for Australia.
The new records are the result of recently published work, additional field.collecting, underwater observation, photographs, and previously unpublished spearfishing records
Baseline survey of the Port of Darwin for introduced marine species
In 1997, the Northern Territory Government recognised that with development of Darwin as a major commercial shipping hub, there was a need to provide information upon which assessment could be made of the status of the Port of Darwin as regards introduced marine pests, and committed significant funding (approximately $340,000) for a major baseline study of the port to be carried out under National Port Survey Program guidelines over two years (1998-1999)..
Joint Inference in Weakly-Annotated Image Datasets via Dense Correspondence
We present a principled framework for inferring pixel labels in weakly-annotated image datasets. Most previous, example-based approaches to computer vision rely on a large corpus of densely labeled images. However, for large, modern image datasets, such labels are expensive to obtain and are often unavailable. We establish a large-scale graphical model spanning all labeled and unlabeled images, then solve it to infer pixel labels jointly for all images in the dataset while enforcing consistent annotations over similar visual patterns. This model requires significantly less labeled data and assists in resolving ambiguities by propagating inferred annotations from images with stronger local visual evidences to images with weaker local evidences. We apply our proposed framework to two computer vision problems, namely image annotation with semantic segmentation, and object discovery and co-segmentation (segmenting multiple images containing a common object). Extensive numerical evaluations and comparisons show that our method consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art in automatic annotation and semantic labeling, while requiring significantly less labeled data. In contrast to previous co-segmentation techniques, our method manages to discover and segment objects well even in the presence of substantial amounts of noise images (images not containing the common object), as typical for datasets collected from Internet search
Bayesian Painting by Numbers: Flexible Priors for Colour-Invariant Object Recognition
Generative models of images should take into account transformations of geometry and reflectance. Then, they can provide explanations of images that are factorized into intrinsic properties that are useful for subsequent tasks, such as object classification. It was previously shown how images and objects within images could be described as compositions of regions called structural elements or ‘stels’. In this way, transformations of the reflectance and illumination of object parts could be accounted for using a hidden variable that is used to ‘paint’ the same stel differently in different images. For example, the stel corresponding to the petals of a flower can be red in one image and yellow in another. Previous stel models have used a fixed number of stels per image and per image class. Here, we introduce a Bayesian stel model, the colour − invariant admixture (CIA) model, which can infer different numbers of stels for different object types, as appropriate. Results on Caltech101 images show that this method is capable of automatically selecting a number of stels that reflects the complexity of the object class and that these stels are useful for object recognition.Engineering and Applied Science
Abelian Hidden Sectors at a GeV
We discuss mechanisms for naturally generating GeV-scale hidden sectors in
the context of weak-scale supersymmetry. Such low mass scales can arise when
hidden sectors are more weakly coupled to supersymmetry breaking than the
visible sector, as happens when supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the
visible sector by gauge interactions under which the hidden sector is
uncharged, or if the hidden sector is sequestered from gravity-mediated
supersymmetry breaking. We study these mechanisms in detail in the context of
gauge and gaugino mediation, and present specific models of Abelian GeV-scale
hidden sectors. In particular, we discuss kinetic mixing of a U(1)_x gauge
force with hypercharge, singlets or bi-fundamentals which couple to both
sectors, and additional loop effects. Finally, we investigate the possible
relevance of such sectors for dark matter phenomenology, as well as for low-

Panspermia, Past and Present: Astrophysical and Biophysical Conditions for the Dissemination of Life in Space
Astronomically, there are viable mechanisms for distributing organic material
throughout the Milky Way. Biologically, the destructive effects of ultraviolet
light and cosmic rays means that the majority of organisms arrive broken and
dead on a new world. The likelihood of conventional forms of panspermia must
therefore be considered low. However, the information content of dam-aged

Cosmic magnetic structures have in common that they are anchored
in a dynamo, that an external driver converts kinetic energy into internal
magnetic energy, that this magnetic energy is transported as Poynting fl ux across the magnetically dominated structure, and that the magnetic energy
is released in the form of particle acceleration, heating, bulk motion,
MHD waves, and radiation. The investigation of the electric current system is
particularly illuminating as to the course of events and the physics involved.
