    The Australian science curriculum

The Australian Science Curriculum has appeared at a time when there is widespread concern for the quality of science teaching and learning in Australia and the engagement of students in learning science, leading to calls for significant reform. The new curriculum thus carries the hopes of reform-minded scientists and educators for a change in the way science in schools can support teaching practices that engage students in quality learning. This analysis will examine whether it is an adequate vehicle for doing this. Will it live up to our expectations?<br /

Violence and youth are key issues in contemporary society, whether youths are the victim of violence as in the case of the student teachers in Mexico, or the perpetrators of violence, as in the case of Western adepts to the ISIS jihadist cause. This paper analyses the results of a recent online exploratory survey by the author of youth perceptions of violence in Mexico in comparison with national statistics generalised across the adult age group. The outcome is discussed in relation to the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of the rural student teachers in Guerrero, Mexico and Wilkinson’s and Pickett’s global analysis of the relation between social and economic inequality and the increase in violent crime. Finally these issues are related to Mexican family values and morality in order to gauge the possible challenges involved in addressing the factors involved in the issues raised

Public demands for quality and equality in the institution of education has effected research and redesigning in library-media orientation. Options for optimum teaching and learning of skills, aside from the traditional method, have been researched. Few of these research designs have been scientific. This experimental study, using eighth-grade learners, investigated the use of Instructional Packages as one effective option. Traditional Lecture Packages which did not provide for individual differences were compared to learner-based instruction in the design of Instructional Packages. Quotation Books, the instrument used to collect the data, measured the achievement of learners both before and after the study. The traditional method of library-media orientation proved most effective in this experimental study

LA IMPORTANCIA DEL DISEÑO DE ESTRATEGIAS CONGRUENTES CON EL CONTEXTO LOCAL PARA INCREMENTAR LA INSERCIÓN LABORAL DE JÓVENES: UN ANÁLISIS DEL IMPACTO DE REDES SOCIALES EN EL SURESTE DE MÉXICO

Each day world statistics on youth unemployment increase and there is an apparent lack of clear agreement on strategies to curb the current trends. The International Labour Organisation reported in 2013 that were more than 73 million unemployed youths between 15 and 24 years old. We argue in this paper that public policy is not always best adapted to local contexts when it comes to actions to raise workplace insertion amongst this segment of the population. With reference to a study of university graduates in a public university in the southeast of Mexico, we evaluate the impact of national public policy which takes pertinence and quality of higher education programmes as the key factors that influence school to work transition; but we also evaluate the impact of a well-known and highly used local factor which is ignored by the public policy models, namely horizontal social networks. Alternative strategies are proposed on the basis of the results of this study and we close by generalising the lessons learned in this study to the problems of youth unemployment in general
