    Differential biomass allocation to plant organs and their allelopathic impact on the growth of crop plants: A case study on the invasibility of Ageratum conyzoides in Indian dry tropics

    Variation in biomass allocation strategy of the alien winter annual billy goat weed (Ageratum conyzoides L.) was investigated for its invasiveness at two contrasting sites of occurrence in Indian dry tropical peri-urban region at longterm and recurrently infested site (LTI) and short-term infested (STI) site. Growth retardation impact of leaf, stem, root and reproductive part of this weed on maize and mung growths was also investigated. Compared to LTI site, the plants at STI site had higher mean basal diameter, leaf number, total plant biomass, leaf and reproductive mass fractions. Phenotypic plasticity was also higher here, albeit marginally. On the other hand, LTI plants had higher mean shoot length, belowground: aboveground biomass ratio, stem and root mass fractions. Biomass allocation to different components varied with ontogeny and site/soil conditions. While stem allocation increased with plant size at both sites, the leaf allocation generally declined. At any ontogenetic point, the reproductive and leaf allocations by plants were higher at STI compared to LTI. Root allocation at STI increased with plant size, whereas it decreased at LTI. Soil organic carbon significantly improved with increasing amount of residue of leaf, stem, root and reproductive part incorporated in soil. The leaf and root residue-amended soils recorded increasing growth retardation with increase in the amount of their incorporation in the soil

    Postictal serotonin levels are associated with peri-ictal apnea.

    ObjectiveTo determine the relationship between serum serotonin (5-HT) levels, ictal central apnea (ICA), and postconvulsive central apnea (PCCA) in epileptic seizures.MethodsWe prospectively evaluated video EEG, plethysmography, capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2), and ECG for 49 patients (49 seizures) enrolled in a multicenter study of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Postictal and interictal venous blood samples were collected after a clinical seizure for measurement of serum 5-HT levels. Seizures were classified according to the International League Against Epilepsy 2017 seizure classification. We analyzed seizures with and without ICA (n = 49) and generalized convulsive seizures (GCS) with and without PCCA (n = 27).ResultsPostictal serum 5-HT levels were increased over interictal levels for seizures without ICA (p = 0.01), compared to seizures with ICA (p = 0.21). In patients with GCS without PCCA, serum 5-HT levels were increased postictally compared to interictal levels (p < 0.001), but not in patients with seizures with PCCA (p = 0.22). Postictal minus interictal 5-HT levels also differed between the 2 groups with and without PCCA (p = 0.03). Increased heart rate was accompanied by increased serum 5-HT levels (postictal minus interictal) after seizures without PCCA (p = 0.03) compared to those with PCCA (p = 0.42).ConclusionsThe data suggest that significant seizure-related increases in serum 5-HT levels are associated with a lower incidence of seizure-related breathing dysfunction, and may reflect physiologic changes that confer a protective effect against deleterious phenomena leading to SUDEP. These results need to be confirmed with a larger sample size study

    Why does currency denomination in external liabilities of small island developing states matter? Evidence from Fiji

    The valuation effects on international investment position induced by the exchange rate volatility are not uniform or easily manageable in small and vulnerable economies when compared with larger developing or developed countries. To investigate the underlying dynamics, we developed a foreign currency exposure index over the period 2006–2019. The positive reading of the index suggests that though Fiji has a high net negative international investment position (90% of its GDP), it does not pose any serious risk. To ascertain determinants of FijiÊŒs exposure index, we applied fully modified ordinary least square and autoregressive distributed lag bounds test. We have compared both estimates for consistency. Our findings suggest that the underlying determinants of FijiÊŒs currency exposure are foreign debt, trade openness and exchange rate. This article bridges the gap in the literature on currency exposure risks in small island developing states and is the first study of its kind for the Pacific region

    Analytical and computational study of magnetization switching in kinetic Ising systems with demagnetizing fields

    An important aspect of real ferromagnetic particles is the demagnetizing field resulting from magnetostatic dipole-dipole interaction, which causes large particles to break up into domains. Sufficiently small particles, however, remain single-domain in equilibrium. This makes such small particles of particular interest as materials for high-density magnetic recording media. In this paper we use analytic arguments and Monte Carlo simulations to study the effect of the demagnetizing field on the dynamics of magnetization switching in two-dimensional, single-domain, kinetic Ising systems. For systems in the ``Stochastic Region,'' where magnetization switching is on average effected by the nucleation and growth of fewer than two well-defined critical droplets, the simulation results can be explained by the dynamics of a simple model in which the free energy is a function only of magnetization. In the ``Multi-Droplet Region,'' a generalization of Avrami's Law involving a magnetization-dependent effective magnetic field gives good agreement with our simulations.Comment: 29 pages, REVTeX 3.0, 10 figures, 2 more figures by request.     Bacterial and Archaeal Viruses of Himalayan Hot Springs at Manikaran Modulate Host Genomes

    Hot spring-associated viruses, particularly the archaeal viruses, remain under-examined compared to bacteriophages. Previous metagenomic studies of the Manikaran hot springs in India suggested an abundance of viral DNA, which prompted us to examine the virus–host (bacterial and archaeal) interactions in sediment and microbial mat samples collected from the thermal discharges. Here, we characterize the viruses (both bacterial and archaeal) from this Himalayan hot spring using both metagenomics assembly and electron microscopy. We utilized four shotgun samples from sediment (78–98°C) and two from microbial mats (50°C) to reconstruct 65 bacteriophage genomes (24–200 kb). We also identified 59 archaeal viruses that were notably abundant across the sediment samples. Whole-genome analyses of the reconstructed bacteriophage genomes revealed greater genomic conservation in sediments (65%) compared to microbial mats (49%). However, a minimal phage genome was still maintained across both sediment and microbial mats suggesting a common origin. To complement the metagenomic data, scanning-electron and helium-ion microscopy were used to reveal diverse morphotypes of Caudovirales and archaeal viruses. The genome level annotations provide further evidence for gene-level exchange between virus and host in these hot springs, and augments our knowledgebase for bacteriophages, archaeal viruses and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat cassettes, which provide a critical resource for studying viromes in extreme natural environments

    Characterisation of the Putative Effector Interaction Site of the Regulatory HbpR Protein from Pseudomonas azelaica by Site-Directed Mutagenesis

    Bacterial transcription activators of the XylR/DmpR subfamily exert their expression control via σ54-dependent RNA polymerase upon stimulation by a chemical effector, typically an aromatic compound. Where the chemical effector interacts with the transcription regulator protein to achieve activation is still largely unknown. Here we focus on the HbpR protein from Pseudomonas azelaica, which is a member of the XylR/DmpR subfamily and responds to biaromatic effectors such as 2-hydroxybiphenyl. We use protein structure modeling to predict folding of the effector recognition domain of HbpR and molecular docking to identify the region where 2-hydroxybiphenyl may interact with HbpR. A large number of site-directed HbpR mutants of residues in- and outside the predicted interaction area was created and their potential to induce reporter gene expression in Escherichia coli from the cognate PC promoter upon activation with 2-hydroxybiphenyl was studied. Mutant proteins were purified to study their conformation. Critical residues for effector stimulation indeed grouped near the predicted area, some of which are conserved among XylR/DmpR subfamily members in spite of displaying different effector specificities. This suggests that they are important for the process of effector activation, but not necessarily for effector specificity recognition

    Gene expression of bacterial collagenolytic proteases in root caries

    Objective: It is unknown whether bacteria play a role in the collagen matrix degradation that occurs during caries progression. Our aim was to characterize the expression level of genes involved in bacterial collagenolytic proteases in root biofilms with and without caries. Method: we collected samples from active cavitated root caries lesions (RC, n = 30) and from sound root surfaces (SRS, n = 10). Total microbial RNA was isolated and cDNA sequenced on the Illumina Hi-Seq2500. Reads were mapped to 162 oral bacterial reference genomes. Genes encoding putative bacterial collagenolytic proteases were identified. Normalization and differential expression analysis was performed on all metatranscriptomes (FDR8) but none in SRS were Pseudoramibacter alactolyticus [HMPREF0721_RS02020; HMPREF0721_RS04640], Scardovia inopinata [SCIP_RS02440] and Olsenella uli DSM7084 [OLSU_RS02990]. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the U32 proteases may be related to carious dentine. The contribution of a small number of species to dentine degradation should be further investigated. These proteases may have potential in future biotechnological and medical applications, serving as targets for the development of therapeutic agents
