This study has presented a comprehensive overview of the battles and the campaigns that the Confederate Trans-Mississippi Army fought from 1862 to 1865 and explains how the TransMississippi Army made a significant contribution to the overall Confederate war effort. The Trans-Mississippi Army’s major contributions included protecting the international border between the Confederacy and Mexico as well as trans-Mississippi ports in Texas and western Louisiana. By protecting these vital areas, the Trans-Mississippi Army ensured that cotton was successfully exported and that vital war supplies made it into the Confederacy. The TransMississippi Army also contributed to the overall Confederate war effort by ensuring that the trans-Mississippi states did not secede from the Confederacy and form their own Union.Thesis (M.A.)Department of HistoryOrganization of the Trans-Mississippi Army -- Battles and campaigns of the Trans-Mississippi Army -- Supplying the Confederacy : Confederate blockade running and the Trans-Mississippi Army, 1862-1865 -- Keeping the Western states in the Confederacy : Theophilus Holmes, Edmund Kirby Smith and the Trans-Mississippi governors -- Collapse of the Trans-Mississippi Army
