Dynamics of the peel front and the nature of acoustic emission during peeling of an adhesive tape
We investigate the peel front dynamics and acoustic emission of an adhesive
tape within the context of a recent model by including an additional
dissipative energy that mimics bursts of acoustic signals. We find that the
nature of the peeling front can vary from smooth to stuck-peeled configuration
depending on the values of dissipation coefficient, inertia of the roller, mass
of the tape. Interestingly, we find that the distribution of AE bursts shows a
power law statistics with two scaling regimes with increasing pull velocity as
observed in experiments. In this regimes, the stuck-peeled configuration is
similar to the `edge of peeling' reminiscent of a system driven to a critical

Obturations en amalgame et modifications des lymphocytes T
Dental amalgam and nickel alloys have been considered quite safe. Previous authors reported the effect of dental amalgam and nickel alloys on human T-lymphocytes modifications after amalgam dental fillings, into dose-dependence of any modifications and into possible temporary.Eight patients were subjected to dental care with amalgam dental fillings. Drawings of blood were executed at start, fifteen days after late fillings and two months later.The results about modifications of T-lymphocytes were not univocal. We believe, at now, that temporary modifications of the immunity seem to be related to a cytotoxic mechanism.Les auteurs ont étudié les modifications systémiques des lymphocytes T (T3) et des sous-populations T4 et T8 après la pose d’obturations en amalgame. Missing physics in stick-slip dynamics of a model for peeling of an adhesive tape
It is now known that the equations of motion for the contact point during
peeling of an adhesive tape mounted on a roll introduced earlier are singular
and do not support dynamical jumps across the two stable branches of the peel
force function. By including the kinetic energy of the tape in the Lagrangian,
we derive equations of motion that support stick-slip jumps as a natural
consequence of the inherent dynamics. In the low mass limit, these equations
reproduce solutions obtained using a differential-algebraic algorithm
introduced for the earlier equations. Our analysis also shows that mass of the

Dynamics of stick-slip in peeling of an adhesive tape
We investigate the dynamics of peeling of an adhesive tape subjected to a
constant pull speed. We derive the equations of motion for the angular speed of
the roller tape, the peel angle and the pull force used in earlier
investigations using a Lagrangian. Due to the constraint between the pull
force, peel angle and the peel force, it falls into the category of
differential-algebraic equations requiring an appropriate algorithm for its
numerical solution. Using such a scheme, we show that stick-slip jumps emerge
in a purely dynamical manner. Our detailed numerical study shows that these set
of equations exhibit rich dynamics hitherto not reported. In particular, our
analysis shows that inertia has considerable influence on the nature of the
dynamics. Following studies in the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, we suggest a
phenomenological peel force function which includes the influence of the pull
speed. This reproduces the decreasing nature of the rupture force with the pull
speed observed in experiments. This rich dynamics is made transparent by using
a set of approximations valid in different regimes of the parameter space. The
approximate solutions capture major features of the exact numerical solutions
and also produce reasonably accurate values for the various quantities of

Inhibitory effect of quercetin on OVCA 433 cells and presence of type II oestrogen binding sites in primary ovarian tumours and cultured cells.
We investigated the effect of the flavonoid quercetin (Q) on the proliferation of the ovarian cancer cell line OVCA 433. Growth experiments demonstrated that Q exerted a reversible dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation in the range of concentrations between 10 nM and 10 microM. Two other flavonoids tested, rutin and hesperidin, were ineffective in inhibiting cell growth. Cell cycle analysis showed that the growth inhibitory effect of Q was due to a blocking effect in the GO/G1 phase. Using a whole cell assay with (6.7-3H) oestradiol (3H-E2) as tracer we demonstrated that OVCA 433 cells contain type II oestrogen binding sites (type II EBS). Competition analysis showed that Q competed for 3H-E2 binding to type II EBS while both rutin and hesperidin did not. Appreciable amounts of type II EBS were also detected in seven primary ovarian tumours. Our results suggest that Q may regulate ovarian cancer cell growth through a mechanism involving a binding interaction with type II EBS. This mechanism could also be active in vivo since primary ovarian tumours contain type II EBS
Early Biomarkers and Intervention Programs for the Infant Exposed to Prenatal Stress
Functional development of affective and reward circuits, cognition and
response inhibition later in life exhibits vulnerability periods during
gestation and early childhood. Extensive evidence supports the model that
exposure to stressors in the gestational period and early postnatal life
increases an individual's susceptibility to future impairments of functional
development. Recent versions of this model integrate epigenetic mechanisms of
the developmental response. Their understanding will guide the future treatment
of the associated neuropsychiatric disorders. A combination of non-invasively
obtainable physiological signals and epigenetic biomarkers related to the
principal systems of the stress response, the Hypothalamic-Pituitary axis (HPA)
and the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), are emerging as the key predictors of
neurodevelopmental outcomes. Such electrophysiological and epigenetic
biomarkers can prove to timely identify children benefiting most from early
intervention programs. Such programs should ameliorate future disorders in
otherwise apparently healthy children. The recently developed Early
Family-Centered Intervention Programs aim to influence the care and stimuli
provided daily by the family and improving parent/child attachment, a key
element for healthy socio-emotional adult life. Although frequently
underestimated, such biomarker-guided early intervention strategy represents a
crucial first step in the prevention of future neuropsychiatric problems and in

Hereditary thrombocytosis caused by MPLSer505Asn is associated with a high thrombotic risk, splenomegaly and progression to bone marrow fibrosis.
Background The MPL(Ser505Asn) mutation has been reported to be a cause of hereditary thrombocythemia. Recently, we detected this mutation in a large proportion of children with familial thrombocythemia, suggesting that in Italy the incidence of MPL(Ser505Asn) mutation could be underestimated. DESIGN AND METHODS: We extended the search for this mutation to all patients with essential thrombocythemia who had a positive family history for thrombocytosis or essential thrombocythemia. We identified eight Italian families positive for the MPL(Ser505Asn) mutation. Clinical and hematologic data were available for members of seven families, including 21 patients with a proven mutation and 20 relatives with thrombocytosis. RESULTS: Fifteen major thrombotic episodes, nine of which were fatal, were recorded among 41 patients. The thrombotic manifestation was stroke in four cases, myocardial infarction in seven cases, fetal loss in two cases, deep vein thrombosis of the leg in one case and Budd Chiari syndrome in one case. Almost all patients over 20 years old had splenomegaly and bone marrow fibrosis, while these were rarely observed in patients under 20 years old, suggesting that these manifestations are associated with aging. Finally, the life expectancy of family members with thrombocytosis was significantly shorter than that of members without thrombocytosis (P=0.003). Conclusions Patients with familial thrombocytosis caused by a MPL(Ser505Asn) mutation have a high risk of thrombosis and, with aging, develop splenomegaly and bone marrow fibrosis, significantly affecting their life expectancy
Unusual CD4+CD28nullT Lymphocytes and Recurrence of Acute Coronary Events
ObjectivesWe hypothesized that the expansion of unusual T lymphocytes, CD4+CD28nullT cells, might represent a key pathogenetic mechanism of recurrent instability.BackgroundClinical presentation of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is variable. Some patients have recurrent episodes of instability, despite optimal treatment, whereas others have a single acute event in their life. The CD4+CD28nullT cells, with a functional profile that favors vascular injury, have recently been found both in peripheral blood and in unstable coronary plaques of patients with ACS.MethodsPeripheral blood T cells from 120 consecutive unstable angina (UA) patients were analyzed for the distribution of T-cell subsets by flow cytometry. Patients were subgrouped according to the occurrence of prior (during the 24 months before the study enrollment) and subsequent (during the 24 months of follow-up) acute coronary events. For 51 patients, the index event was the first ever (G1); 30 patients had prior events (G2); and 39 patients had further events at follow-up (death, myocardial infarction, or UA) or both before and after the index event (G3).ResultsThe CD4+CD28nullT-cell frequency was higher in G3 than in G2 and G1 (median 9.5% [range 2.4% to 48.0%] vs. 5.1% [range 0.4% to 27.8%] and 2.3% [range 0.2% to 22.8%], respectively; p < 0.001). The expansion of these unusual T lymphocytes was higher in patients with elevated C-reactive protein levels, and it was reduced by statin therapy. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, CD4+CD28nullT-cell frequency was an independent predictor of future acute coronary events (odds ratio 3.01, 95% confidence interval 1.1 to 8.25; p = 0.023).ConclusionsA perturbation of T-cell repertoire is strongly associated with the recurrence of acute coronary events, conceivably playing a key pathogenetic role
