    SWEARWORDS USED BY BENGKULUNESE: A CASE STUDY OF TABOO EXPRESSIONS

    Swearwords are natural part of our language. They are used as the most healing way to throw away some extra frustration or anger in a difficult situation. Anderson  lists  three  different  motives  for swearing:  psychological  motives, social motives and linguistic motives.  The primary aim in this research is to find out swearwords that are commonly used by Bengkulunese people and the most frequent motives behind them. There are 20 Bengkulunese people as the participants of this research who filled in questionnaire. The questionnaire contained a table which consisted of two columns. The first is the swearwords column and the second one is the circumstances of the occurred swearwords which must be filled in by the participants completely. Based on the swearwords gained from the participants, there are 43 swearwords that are generally used by them in their daily speaking activity. Some of them are still in Indonesian language version and some other swearwords are from Bengkulunese language version. For example the word “sialan” and “kurang ajar” are Indonesian languages that are still understood by those who are not Bengkulunese, while the word “sea’”, “bigal”, or “cuk mak” are based from Bengkulunese language

    An analysis of intra-sentential switching used by Youtuber: Livjunkie

    Code switching can be produced by bilingual users including a Youtuber. The researcher analysed the switching by a bilingual Youtuber namely Livjunkie. Within the title of “An Analysis of Intra -Sentential Switching Used by a Youtuber: Livjunkie”, the discussion of this research deals with the number of utterances. The objectives of this research are to find out types of word included as intra-sentential switching used by Livjunkie, the most frequently occuring word included as intra-sentential switching used by Livjunkie, and the meaning of the word frequently used by Livjunkie included as intra-sentential switching. This research was designed to use descriptive qualitative method. This research was carried out by taking steps to collect data, classify data, analyze data, and make conclusions. The data analysis technique that was used is based on Spradley’s theory. The researcher found 9 types of words appreared in intra-sentential switching used by Livjunkie in her selected Youtube videos. They are Noun, Adjective, Conjunction, Adverb, Verb, Exclamation, Preposition, Numeral, and Determiner. There are 707 nouns found in this research. The percentage is 57.71 %. It is the highest value of all. There is only 1 determiner found in this research. The percentage is 0.08 %. It is the lowest value of all. It was also found that there are 1223 data that have denotative meanings and there are 2 data that have connotative meanings. It was analyzed that Livjunkie used English words within a clause or sentence in Bahasa Indonesia. The results also show that the kinds of meaning found are mostly included in denotative meaning instead of connotative meaning. Beside that, the videos themselves show the phenomenon of bilingualism. It is hoped that the results will be useful for the development of linguistics especially in English letters or Sociolinguistics

    An analysis of Kevin's ego in "Split" movie - A Psycoanalysis Study

    Split movie is an interesting psycholinguistically analyzed movie in the last decade. The movie criticizes a bad psychological relationship between the main character and his community. Through this study, the researcher analyzed the multiple personality of main character on Split movie and used the theory of Sigmund Freud within the title “An Analysis of Kevin’s Ego in “Split” Movie (a Psychoanalysis Study)”. The purpose of this study are to find out Kevin’s ego based on the Sigmund Freud’s defence mechanism in the movie and to find out Kevin’s most frequently emerging ego based on the Sigmund Freud’s defence mechanism. In  this  study the researcher used a  qualitative  descriptive  method by collecting  data  on all  character conversations in “Split” movie. The data were analyzed based on Frued's theory of defence mechanism. Furthermore, the data were also anaylized by using Spradley's theory. There are three steps that must be taken in using this theory, namely domain analysis, taxonomic analysis and component analysis. The researcher found 8 Kevin’s egos that got involved in real dialogues in Split movie. They are childish, firm man, mother-like, effeminate person, firm and effeminate, cruel, cool man, and weak lady. The highest val ue of frequently emerging ego goes to childish. Whereas, the lowest frequently emerging ego is a weak lady. Hopefully, the results of this study will increase the knowledge in English letters, especially in psychoanalysis study about various egos of movie characters or even real persons and the defence mechanism based on Sigmund Freud’s and Spradley’s theories

    Investigating Students' Strategies and Methods in Translating English Text into Indonesian

    In this era, England plays an important role in all fields, especially in education. Someone demanded to know the meaning and function of an English word. Thus, translation is also one of the four skills of mastering the English language, in addition to listening, speaking, reading and writing, translation also has a main function. The purpose of this work was to find out if students are committed to translating an English text, to describe the method used by students in translating an English text, to observe the ability of the students to translate an English text. Therefore, this study seemed very suitable for a case study because it tried to explore and explore student strategies in one class of 23 students. In this study, the researcher administered the test to students. In the test technique, the researcher gave an English text and asked the students to translate the English text as best as possible. There are four criteria to evaluate a student's translation, they are accuracy of message content, distinctiveness of message, appropriateness of language use and lastly mechanical appropriateness. The researcher also interviewed the translation teacher who was considered a key informant who really knew how far the student's ability to translate an English text was. The result of the interview was given to the teacher; showed that the students of the 4th semester still had many difficulties, they used only one technique for translation. In particular, these words are rarely found in English textbooks. In addition, the lecturer must be creative to find a suitable translation method for the students of the 4th semester to translate the English text into Indonesian, also the lecturer always motivates the students to understand the text by translating the source language into their target language. Right in Indonesian. At the same time, the students also needed a longer time to practice the translation of the text from the English text to the Indonesian language, because they do not have the right method to translate the English text and the lack of vocabulary, although the lecturer.     HOAX BEHIND STATEMENTS SPOKEN BY THE INDONESIA’S PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES OF 2019 ON THE SECOND DEBATE USING THE PROPOSITIONAL MEANING

    This study aims to describe the hoax statements from 2019 Indonesia‟s presidentialcandidate in debate using propositional meaning. The purpose of this study were : 1) Toinvestigate the statements which have indication of hoax. 2) To describe propositionalmeaning behind the statements by presidential candidate in debate. 3) To find out theinfluential factors that make hoax spread. The data were collected through the conversationfrom the 2019 Indonesia‟s presidential candidate debate and analyzed using domain andtaxonomy analysis. The researcher findings showed that 1) There are seven indicated hoaxstatements (9,8%) 2) There are 97,26% statements which have propositional meaning. 3) Themost frequently factor that make hoax spread is factor A (social identity).Keywords: Propositional Meaning, Statements, Presidential Candidate

    Abstract Nowadays, the use of code mixing is easily found in the oralcommunication, especially in the daily communication amongteenagers who like to code and switch their language to show thatthey are modern. The objectives of this research are to find out typesof code mixing used by major characters of Layangan Putus tv seriesand to know the factors that cause the use of code mixing. This studyemployed a qualitative descriptive method as research design.Layangan Putus Tv Series was chosen as the object of this study. Inthis case, the researcher took the utterance from major characters(Kinan, Aris, and Lidya) in 10 episodes of the film as the source ofthe data of this research. The instrument used in this research wasobservation checklist. The checklist consisted of the types of codemixing based on Muysken (2000) theory. There were two findings ofthis research; First, there were three types of Code Mixing used bymajor characters of Layangan Putus TV Series. There were 113insertion, 108 alternation, and 9 congruent lexicalization. Second,there were maybe four factors cause the use of code mixing inLayangan Putus TV series, namely; the participants, the setting orsocial context of interaction, the topic, and the function ofconversation. As a consequence, the researcher recommends thatfuture researchers should make a study of the phenomenon of codemixingin the latest and best TV series and Movie produced byDirector from Indonesia.     Nowadays there are some countries still get interference and new colonialism style from other countries that have more power, it has happened since long time ago until now, especially Asia dan Africa countries. This thesis analyzes orientalism in The Kite Runner novel by Khaled Hosseini. This study intends to show their superior and inferior as The West and The Eas4 and the effects of orientalism in the novel The Kite Runner. The story happened when Russia attacked Afghanistan. This thesis used descriptive qualitative method that consist of collecting data, analyzing data, and presenting the data. In this study, the researcher used Orientalism theory by Edward Said. In this thesis the researcher analyzes selected novel The Kite Runner (2013) by Khaled Hosseini. The researcher finds some samples that shows in the novel there are part about The West, The East, and effects of orientalism. The West according to the novel are Assef and Russia because they delegated side that had more power to oppress weak side/ The East. The East according to the novel are Hassan and Afghanistan because they delegated side that had less power and get oppressed by strong side/ The West.     This study concerns with the descriptive analysis of figurative language in the song lyrics by Taylor Swift's "1989" Album. This research to answer two statement of problem that is(l) what of types of figurative language that is used in the song Lyrics by Taylor Swift's "1989" album? And (II) what the contextual meaning of figurative language in song lyrics by Taylor Swift's "1989" album? And the researcher explains about the review of the related theories and related studies this review is very important because it used as the basis of analysis of the study. The researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method to classify and analyze the sentence. The aim of descriptive qualitative method is to describe a place, fact and characteristic of population systematically, factually and accurately. Descriptive qualitative method employs technique of seeking, collecting and analyzing data. After investigating the sentence in the song lyric, the researcher found several findings of figurative language on it There are seven kinds of figurative language that is used in the song lyrics, they are simile, personification, hyperbole, metaphor, oxymoron, symbol, and synecdoche.     Abstract Speech act is an action performed or conveyed by means of speech. The aims of this research is to analyze speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”. This research has two objectives : first, to analyze speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”, and to analyze the function of speech act used by three governors of Indonesia in the Mata Najwa Talk Show Episode “Kita Bisa Apa” Tiga Gubernur Ditantang Tiktok, Siapa Paling Jago?”. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The description of the data is in the form of utterances and examined based on Austin theories of speech act. Based on the obtained result, it can be concluded that the three governors, Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, and Ridwan Kamil applied three types of speech act (locutionary act, illocutionary act, perlocutionary act). Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan mostly used locutionary act, while Ridwan Kamil used illocutionary act the most. The least used speech act by three governors was perlocutionary act. While three of them did not employ commissive and declarative function, they only used representative, directive, and expressive function of speech act. This site is always post updated news about football, before updates, news of last match, and news of the player or the specific club. There are many new words created in football news. The type of research is descriptive qualitative. The object of this research is the register used in champions league news. The data are register words and phrases included in printed material used in goal.com. The data source is the news report of Real Madrid in Champions League. The researcher collects the news in goal.com, reads the news, and writes down the register words and phrases, and analyses the data In analyzing the data, the writer classifies the data into categories as the register, anafy7.es the data by identifying the linguistic form of the register, Identifying the differences between lexical and contextual meaning based on Larson's theory. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds that in linguistic form there are 98 data of noun, 25 data of verb, 10 data of adjective, I 04 data of compound word, 7 data of abbreviation, and 11 data of noun phrase, 7 verb phrase, and 4 adjective phrase and there are two types of meaning: 30 data of lexical meaning and 82 data of contextual meaning This means that the more frequently appear of linguistic forms are in compound word and meaning is in contextual meaning.   Keyword: Sociolinguistics, Variety of Language, Register
