SUE: A Special Purpose Computer for Spin Glass Models

The use of last generation Programmable Electronic Components makes possible the construction of very powerful and competitive special purpose computers. We have designed, constructed and tested a three-dimensional Spin Glass model dedicated machine, which consists of 12 identical boards. Each single board can simulate 8 different systems, updating all the systems at every clock cycle. The update speed of the whole machine is 217ps/spin with 48 MHz clock frequency. A device devoted to fast random number generation has been developed and included in every board. The on-board reprogrammability permits us to change easily the lattice size, or even the update algorithm or the action. We present here a detailed description of the machine and the first runs using the Heat Bath algorithm.Comment: Submitted to Computer Physics Communications, 19 pages, 5 figures, references adde

Impact of cow's milk intake on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function: a systematic review

    Get PDF
Dairy products are thought to improve recovery after both resistance and endurance exercises due to their nutritional proprieties. We systematically reviewed the effects of dairy product intake on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function in humans. A literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE (via PubMed) and Web of Science databases from their inception to 15th April 2018. The initial search retrieved 7708 articles, and a total of 11 studies were finally included after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. All the selected studies were conducted with cow's milk. Whereas some studies found significant positive effect of cow's milk on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function, others did not find any effect. These controversies could be due to the heterogeneity of cow's milk ingestion (e.g., amount of cow's milk, timing of consuming the cow's milk), to the type of intervention, and to the large heterogeneity of outcomes measured. Limited studies exist examining the effects of cow's milk consumption and its influence on exercise performance and recovery of muscle function, therefore further studies are needed to draw more definitive conclusions. The study was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education (FPU 13/04365 and 15/04059), by the Redes temáticas de investigación cooperativa RETIC (Red SAMID RD16/0022), and by the University of Granada Plan Propio de Investigacion 2016 -Excellence actions: Unit of Excellence on Exercise and Health (UCEES) - and Plan Propio de Investigación 2018 - Programa Contratos-Puente, and the Junta de Andalucía, Consejería de Conocimiento, Investigación y Universidades (ERDF: ref. Dynamical generation of a gauge symmetry in the Double-Exchange model

    Get PDF
It is shown that a bosonic formulation of the double-exchange model, one of the classical models for magnetism, generates dynamically a gauge-invariant phase in a finite region of the phase diagram. We use analytical methods, Monte Carlo simulations and Finite-Size Scaling analysis. We study the transition line between that region and the paramagnetic phase. The numerical results show that this transition line belongs to the Universality Class of the Antiferromagnetic RP(2) model. The fact that one can define a Universality Class for the Antiferromagnetic RP(2) model, different from the one of the O(N) models, is puzzling and somehow contradicts naive expectations about Universality

Tuning the separation properties of zeolitic imidazolate framework core-shell structures via post-synthetic modification

The conversion of ZIF-8 into ZIF-7 via post-synthetic modification with benzimidazole has been monitored by quantifying the liberated 2-methylimidazole by chromatography. The reaction kinetics have been adjusted to the shrinking core model, providing the diffusion coefficient of bIm inside the pores and the reaction kinetic constant (2.86 × 10-7 cm2 s-1 and 1.36 × 10-4 cm s-1, respectively). A wide variety of ZIF-7/8 hybrid core-shell frameworks have been obtained during this reaction. The most promising have been characterized by SEM/TEM, TGA, N2 and CO2 adsorption, FTIR and 13C NMR, showing features of the coexistence of both phases inside the frameworks. Their structures have also been simulated, providing comparable XRD and adsorption results. The hybrid material has been used as a filler for PBI mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) applied to H2/CO2 separation, enhancing the performances of the bare PBI polymer and MMMs containing ZIF-8 or ZIF-7 as a filler, with a maximum H2 permeability value of 1921 Barrer and a H2/CO2 selectivity of 11.8

The U(1)-Higgs Model: Critical Behaviour in the Confinig-Higgs region

We study numerically the critical properties of the U(1)-Higgs lattice model, with fixed Higgs modulus, in the region of small gauge coupling where the Higgs and Confining phases merge. We find evidence of a first order transition line that ends in a second order point. By means of a rotation in parameter space we introduce thermodynamic magnitudes and critical exponents in close resemblance with simple models that show analogous critical behaviour. The measured data allow us to fit the critical exponents finding values in agreement with the mean field prediction. The location of the critical point and the slope of the first order line are accurately given.Comment: 21 text pages. 12 postscript figures available on reques

Critical Behavior of the Three-Dimensional Ising Spin Glass

    Get PDF
We have simulated, using parallel tempering, the three dimensional Ising spin glass model with binary couplings in a helicoidal geometry. The largest lattice (L=20) has been studied using a dedicated computer (the SUE machine). We have obtained, measuring the correlation length in the critical region, a strong evidence for a second-order finite temperature phase transition ruling out other possible scenarios like a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. Precise values for the ν\nu and η\eta critical exponents are also presented.Comment: RevTex; 12 pages plus 5 ps figures. Final version to be published in PR
