Gender diversity on Boards of Directors and business success

This paper analyzes the relationship between gender diversity on Boards of Directors and business success. For this purpose, the authors used one sample of companies listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange. The paper analyzes a period of three years, between 2005 and 2007. A descriptive analysis has been carried out. Women’s labor status has been studied in these three years. The paper also covers a panel analysis. Does Board Gender Diversity Influence Financial Performance? Evidence from Spain

In recent years, several countries have enacted guidelines and/or mandatory laws to increase the presence of women on the boards of companies. Through these regulatory interventions, the aim is to eradicate the social and labor grievances that women have traditionally experienced and which has relegated them to smaller-scale jobs. Nevertheless, and despite the advances achieved, the female representation in the boardroom remains far from the desired levels. In this context, it is now necessary to enhance the advantages of board gender diversity from both ethical and economic points of view. This article examines the relation between board gender diversity and economic results in Spain: the second country in the world to legally require gender quotas in boardrooms and historically characterized by a minimal female participation in the workforce. Based on a sample of 125 non-financial firms listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange from 2005 to 2009, our findings show that in the period analyzed the increase of the number of women on boards was over 98 %. This suggests that compulsory legislation offers an efficient framework to execute the recommendation of Spanish codes of good governance by means of the increase in the number of women in the boards of firms. Furthermore, we find that the increase in the number of women on the boards is positively related to higher economic results. Therefore, both results suggest that gender diversity in boardrooms should be incremented, mandatory laws being a key factor to do so

Força manual d’adults amb discapacitat intel·lectual

Objectiu. Presentar una descripció de la força de prensió manual d’homes i dones amb discapacitat intel·lectual (DI) i comparar els resultats amb valors de referència d’altres persones amb i sense discapacitat intel·lectual. Mètode. El present treball és un estudi transversal observacional, finançat per la Fundació SAMU, en el qual es van avaluar a 122 persones amb DI (86 homes i 36 dones) durant el desenvolupament d’unes jornades de caràcter recreatiu en les quals van participar diverses associacions d’atenció d’aquest col·lectiu. La bateria de test utilitzada va ser l’Alpaha-*Fit Test Battery for Adults. Resultats. Es presenten els resultats relacionats amb les variables de força del membre superior (Hand Grip Strength) per grups d’edat (20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59 anys). Les dades mostren valors que oscil·len des dels 31 kg en els homes més joves amb DI fins als 13.3 kg del grup més madur de dones. Aquestes troballes són similars als valors de referència de població amb DI espanyola. No obstant això, són molt inferiors als obtinguts per la població sense discapacitat de la mateixa edat. Conclusió. Els resultats evidencien el menor rendiment de les persones amb DI en proves de força de prensió manual per la qual cosa es fa evident la necessitat de dur a terme programes d’exercici físic o esport amb les persones amb DI

Relaciones dinámicas en el mercado internacional de carne de vacuno

El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar la integración del mercado internacional de carne de vacuno y los efectos de la política de subvenciones a la exportación de la Unión Europea sobre dicho mercado. Para ello, se analizan, en primer lugar, las relaciones dinámicas entre los precios mensuales de exportación de carne deı vacuno de Argentina y de importación de carne australiana en Estado Unidos durante el período 1977-1997. Dichas relaciones se representan mediante un modelo VAR con mecanismo de corrección del error. Posteriormente, se amplía el modelo anterior incluyendo las exportaciones de carne de vacuno de la Unión Europea. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que, a pesar de la tradicional segmentación del mercado internacional de vacuno ocasionada por la fiebre aftosa, dicho mercado está integrado. La relación de cointegración entre los precios sólo puede establecerse después de considerar algunos fenómenos atípicos que afectan fundamentalmente a la economía argentina. Finalmente, se concluye que las exportaciones de la Unión Europea afectan a las relaciones dinámicas a largo plazo entre los precios de dicho mercado

Body composition and body balance in people with intellectual disabilities: a descriptive study

Objetivo: Evaluar la composición corporal y el equilibrio corporal de adultos con discapacidad intelectual. Métodos: Estudio transversal descriptivo y comparación de resultados con valores de referencia presentados en población sin discapacidad. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 86 hombres y 36 mujeres con discapacidad intelectual con edades comprendidas entre los 21 y los 60 años. Se evaluaron el equilibrio estático, dinámico y la composición corporal mediante las pruebas del Alpha-Fit Test Battery for Adults. Resultados: Los resultados obtenidos por los participantes fueron comparados con valores de referencia de personas sin discapacidad y se muestran como media y desviación típica para diferentes grupos de edad. Los análisis descriptivos mostraron que las personas con discapacidad obtuvieron resultados relacionados con un alto riesgo de enfermedad cardiovascular en relación a la composición corporal, presentando la mayoría de ellos sobrepeso y valores elevados de circunferencia de cintura. En relación al equilibrio, tanto en posiciones estáticas como dinámicas, los participantes presentaron resultados vinculados a una baja condición física. Conclusiones: La composición corporal y la capacidad de equilibrio de las personas con discapacidad intelectual evaluadas en el presente estudio son comparables a la de adultos mayores sin discapacidad de referencia.Purpose: To assess body composition and body balance, both static and dynamic, of adults with intellectual disabilities. Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was used. 86 men and 36 women with intellectual disabilities participated in the study (21-60 years old). The Alpha-Fit Test Battery for Adults was used to evaluate dynamic and static balance and body composition. Results: Results were compared to published reference values from people without disabilities. Results are showed as mean and standard deviation for each age group. Body composition variables of participants with intellectual disabilities were related to high risk of cardiovascular disease: Most of them presented overweight and high values of waist circumference. Relates to body balance, both static and dynamic, people with disabilities showed performances related to a very low physical condition. Conclusion: In the present study people with intellectual disabilities of any age showed results related to body composition and body balance comparable to older adults without disabilities

Cox process goodness-of-fit test. A Matlab file.

The Cox Process (CP) models many real phenomena dealing with counting data. Having observed sample paths of a counting process in a discrete set of time points and assuming that the phenomenon can be modeled by a Cox process or compound Cox process, an important task is to decide if those paths fit a given model. A goodnes-of-fit test to assess the coherence of the new observed data with the given Cox process has been proposed by the authors, taking into account if the process is parametrically known or it has to be estimated. A Matlab tool for Cox Processes with truncated Gaussian mean

The truncated Gaussian distribution rises in many practical situations, the aim of this paper is to give some tools to solve common tasks within this kind of random variables. A modified maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the distribution from an observed data set is given, we also implement a goodness-of- t test for a theoretical truncated Gaussian distribution. Finally, if we assume that the mean of a Cox process at each instant of time is distributed as a truncated Gaussian distribution, we give the most probable value of the process at a given time point.FQM347, MTM2010-2050

Blogs as a teaching-learning method

La innovación educativa y la búsqueda de métodos de enseñanza-aprendizaje que propicien la motivación y el interés del alumno se han convertido en las prioridades de los profesores en la educación. La incorporación de las nuevas tecnologías a los centros educativos hace necesario que los docentes introduzcan los recursos didácticos que aporten valor y supongan un beneficio. Con la pretensión de indagar sobre la importancia de los blogs en la educación, el fin perseguido con esta investigación es descubrir si los blogs están presentes en el aula como una herramienta más de integración de las TICs en el mundo educativo.Educational innovation and looking for teaching-learning methods which allows having a student motivation and interest have being one of the priorities of the teachers in the education model.
