    Get PDF
In this paper a family of non-singular cylindrical perfect fluid cosmologies is derived. The equation of state corresponds to a stiff fluid. The family depends on two independent functions under very simple conditions. A sufficient condition for geodesic completeness is provided.Comment: 7 pages, RevTeX

Virgin olive oil quality relates to flavor and unique health benefits. Some of these properties are at the most desirable level when the oil is just extracted, since it is not a product that improves with age. On the contrary, the concentrations of many compounds change during its shelf-life. These changes reveal the aging of the oil but do not necessarily mean decay in sensory properties, so in some cases an aged oil from healthy olives may be better qualified than a fresh one from olives affected by fermentation. The aim of this work is to analyze different methodologies proposed for assessing the quality of virgin olive oil with implications in freshness and aging of the oil, and to highlight the possibilities of rapid spectrofluorimetric techniques for assessing oil freshness by checking the evolution of pigments during storage. The observed change in the selected spectral features and mathematical modelling over time was compared with the accepted model for predicting the amount of pyropheophytin a, which is based on isokinetic studies. The best regression was obtained for 655 nm (adjustedR2 = 0.91) wavelength, which matches the distinctive band of pigments. The two mathematical models described in this study highlight the usefulness of pigments in the prediction of the shelf-life of extra virgin olive oil.

Magnetic field driving custom assembly in (FeCo) nanocrystals

    Get PDF
We present the possibility of tuning the nanocrystalline microstructure of Co-rich samples by magnetic field annealing. Custom assembly of nucleated grains, aligned in the field direction, has been observed by means of high resolution transmission microscopy. The organized microstructure was obtained on the basis of the appropriate choice of composition, annealing temperature, related to the initial stages of nanocrystallization process, and magnetic field intensity. The linear pattern of the grains has been explained as a consequence of the counterbalance between magnetic, magnetostatic, and magnetocrystalline couplings, only relevant when the nucleation temperature is well below the Curie temperature of the nucleated phase

    Non-singular radiation cosmological models

In this paper we analyse the possibility of constructing singularity-free inhomogeneous cosmological models with a pure radiation field as matter content. It is shown that the conditions for regularity are very easy to implement and therefore there is a huge number of such spacetimes.Comment: 13 pages, LaTex, ws-mpla, to appear in Modern Physics Letters

Interface double-exchange ferromagnetism in the Mn-Zn-O system: New class of biphase magnetism

    Get PDF
In this Letter, we experimentally show that the room temperature ferromagnetism in the Mn-Zn-O system recently observed is associated with the coexistence of Mn^(3+) and Mn^(4+) via a double-exchange mechanism. The presence of the ZnO around MnO_2 modifies the kinetics of MnO_2 →Mn_2O_3 reduction and favors the coexistence of both Mn oxidation states. The ferromagnetic phase is associated with the interface formed at the Zn diffusion front into Mn oxide, corroborated by preparing thin film multilayers that exhibit saturation magnetization 2 orders of magnitude higher than bulk samples

Nonlinear response of single-molecule nanomagnets: equilibrium and dynamical

We present an experimental study of the {\em nonlinear} susceptibility of Mn12_{12} single-molecule magnets. We investigate both their thermal-equilibrium and dynamical nonlinear responses. The equilibrium results show the sensitivity of the nonlinear susceptibility to the magnetic anisotropy, which is nearly absent in the linear response for axes distributed at random. The nonlinear dynamic response of Mn12_{12} was recently found to be very large and displaying peaks reversed with respect to classical superparamagnets [F. Luis {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 107201 (2004)]. Here we corroborate the proposed explanation -- strong field dependence of the relaxation rate due to the detuning of tunnel energy levels. This is done by studying the orientational dependence of the nonlinear susceptibility, which permits to isolate the quantum detuning contribution. Besides, from the analysis of the longitudinal and transverse contributions we estimate a bound for the decoherence time due to the coupling to the phonon bath.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, resubmitted to Phys.

A new ostracod species from Pliocene sediments of the Gualdalquivir Basin (SW Spain), Cyprideis civis nov. sp., is herein described and illustrated. This new species is distinguished in having small size (length: < 820 μm; height < 460 μm) and strongly reticulated valves and a small size in comparison with other species of this genus. Cyprideis civis nov. sp. inhabited in the bottom, sandy sediments of an infralittoral palaeoenvironment, subjected to occasional freshwater fluxes and storms. In this scenario, this species was part of the gastropod diet, as evidenced by the bioerosion traces found in the valves.
