    TriangleNet: Edge Prior Augmented Network for Semantic Segmentation through Cross-Task Consistency

    This paper addresses the task of semantic segmentation in computer vision, aiming to achieve precise pixel-wise classification. We investigate the joint training of models for semantic edge detection and semantic segmentation, which has shown promise. However, implicit cross-task consistency learning in multi-task networks is limited. To address this, we propose a novel "decoupled cross-task consistency loss" that explicitly enhances cross-task consistency. Our semantic segmentation network, TriangleNet, achieves a substantial 2.88\% improvement over the Baseline in mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) on the Cityscapes test set. Notably, TriangleNet operates at 77.4\% mIoU/46.2 FPS on Cityscapes, showcasing real-time inference capabilities at full resolution. With multi-scale inference, performance is further enhanced to 77.8\%. Furthermore, TriangleNet consistently outperforms the Baseline on the FloodNet dataset, demonstrating its robust generalization capabilities. The proposed method underscores the significance of multi-task learning and explicit cross-task consistency enhancement for advancing semantic segmentation and highlights the potential of multitasking in real-time semantic segmentation.Comment: Accepted for publication in the journal "International Journal of Intelligent Systems

    Quantum simulation of exotic PT-invariant topological nodal loop bands with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice

    Since the well-known PT symmetry has its fundamental significance and implication in physics, where PT denotes the combined operation of space-inversion P and time-reversal T, it is extremely important and intriguing to completely classify exotic PT-invariant topological metals and to physically realize them. Here we, for the first time, establish a rigorous classification of topological metals that are protected by the PT symmetry using KO-theory. As a physically realistic example, a PT-invariant nodal loop (NL) model in a 3D Brillouin zone is constructed, whose topological stability is revealed through its PT-symmetry-protected nontrivial Z2 topological charge. Based on these exact results, we propose an experimental scheme to realize and to detect tunable PT-invariant topological NL states with ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, in which atoms with two hyperfine spin states are loaded in a spin-dependent 3D OL and two pairs of Raman lasers are used to create out-of-plane spin-flip hopping with site-dependent phase. Such a realistic cold-atom setup can yield topological NL states, having a tunable ring-shaped band-touching line with the two-fold degeneracy in the bulk spectrum and non-trivial surface states. The states are actually protected by the combined PT symmetry even in the absence of both P and T symmetries, and are characterized by a Z2-type invariant (a quantized Berry phase). Remarkably, we demonstrate with numerical simulations that (i) the characteristic NL can be detected by measuring the atomic transfer fractions in a Bloch-Zener oscillation; (ii) the topological invariant may be measured based on the time-of-flight imaging; and (iii) the surface states may be probed through Bragg spectroscopy. The present proposal for realizing topological NL states in cold atom systems may provide a unique experimental platform for exploring exotic PT-invariant topological physics.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in Phys.     Field emission enhancement of Au-Si nano-particle-decorated silicon nanowires

    Au-Si nano-particle-decorated silicon nanowire arrays have been fabricated by Au film deposition on silicon nanowire array substrates and then post-thermal annealing under hydrogen atmosphere. Field emission measurements illustrated that the turn-on fields of the non-annealed Au-coated SiNWs were 6.02 to 7.51 V/μm, higher than that of the as-grown silicon nanowires, which is about 5.01 V/μm. Meanwhile, after being annealed above 650°C, Au-Si nano-particles were synthesized on the top surface of the silicon nanowire arrays and the one-dimensional Au-Si nano-particle-decorated SiNWs had a much lower turn-on field, 1.95 V/μm. The results demonstrated that annealed composite silicon nanowire array-based electron field emitters may have great advantages over many other emitters

    Sphingosine kinase 2 activates autophagy and protects neurons against ischemic injury through interaction with Bcl-2 via its putative BH3 domain

    Our previous findings suggest that sphingosine kinase 2 (SPK2) mediates ischemic tolerance and autophagy in cerebral preconditioning. The aim of this study was to determine by which mechanism SPK2 activates autophagy in neural cells. In both primary murine cortical neurons and HT22 hippocampal neuronal cells, overexpression of SPK2 increased LC3II and enhanced the autophagy flux. SPK2 overexpression protected cortical neurons against oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) injury, as evidenced by improvement of neuronal morphology, increased cell viability and reduced lactate dehydrogenase release. The inhibition of autophagy effectively suppressed the neuroprotective effect of SPK2. SPK2 overexpression reduced the co-immunoprecipitation of Beclin-1 and Bcl-2, while Beclin-1 knockdown inhibited SPK2-induced autophagy. Both co-immunoprecipitation and GST pull-down analysis suggest that SPK2 directly interacts with Bcl-2. SPK2 might interact to Bcl-2 in the cytoplasm. Notably, an SPK2 mutant with L219A substitution in its putative BH3 domain was not able to activate autophagy. A Tat peptide fused to an 18-amino acid peptide encompassing the native, but not the L219A mutated BH3 domain of SPK2 activated autophagy in neural cells. The Tat-SPK2 peptide also protected neurons against OGD injury through autophagy activation. These results suggest that SPK2 interacts with Bcl-2 via its BH3 domain, thereby dissociating it from Beclin-1 and activating autophagy. The observation that Tat-SPK2 peptide designed from the BH3 domain of SPK2 activates autophagy and protects neural cells against OGD injury suggest that this structure may provide the basis for a novel class of therapeutic agents against ischemic stroke

    Role of Body Mass Index, Waist-to-Height and Waist-to-Hip Ratio in Prediction of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

    Objective. To investigate the anthropometric indicators that can effectively predict the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods. The height, body weight, waist and hip circumference were measured, and body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height (WHtR) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated. M-H chi square test, logistic regression analysis, and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve were employed for the analysis of risk factors. Patients or Materials. 490 patients were recruited, of whom 250 were diagnosed as NAFLD and 240 as non-NAFLD (control group). Results. Compared with the control group, the BMI, WHR, and WHtR were significantly higher in patients with NAFLD. Logistic regression analysis showed that BMI and WHR were effective prognostic factors of NAFLD. In addition, WHR plays a more important role in prediction of NAFLD by the area under curve. Conclusion. WHR is closely related to the occurrence of NAFLD. We assume that WHR is beneficial for the diagnosis NAFLD

    Selenite reduction by the obligate aerobic bacterium <i>Comamonas testosteroni</i> S44 isolated from a metal-contaminated soil

    BACKGROUND: Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element in most organisms but has to be carefully handled since there is a thin line between beneficial and toxic concentrations. Many bacteria have the ability to reduce selenite (Se(IV)) and (or) selenate (Se(VI)) to red elemental selenium that is less toxic. RESULTS: A strictly aerobic bacterium, Comamonas testosteroni S44, previously isolated from metal(loid)-contaminated soil in southern China, reduced Se(IV) to red selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with sizes ranging from 100 to 200 nm. Both energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX or EDS) and EDS Elemental Mapping showed no element Se and SeNPs were produced inside cells whereas Se(IV) was reduced to red-colored selenium in the cytoplasmic fraction in presence of NADPH. Tungstate inhibited Se(VI) but not Se(IV) reduction, indicating the Se(IV)-reducing determinant does not contain molybdenum as co-factor. Strain S44 was resistant to multiple heavy and transition metal(loid)s such as Se(IV), As(III), Cu(II), and Cd(II) with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 100 mM, 20 mM, 4 mM, and 0.5 mM, respectively. Disruption of iscR encoding a transcriptional regulator negatively impacted cellular growth and subsequent resistance to multiple heavy metal(loid)s. CONCLUSIONS: C. testosteroni S44 could be very useful for bioremediation in heavy metal(loid) polluted soils due to the ability to both reduce toxic Se(VI) and Se(IV) to non-toxic Se (0) under aerobic conditions and to tolerate multiple heavy and transition metals. IscR appears to be an activator to regulate genes involved in resistance to heavy or transition metal(loid)s but not for genes responsible for Se(IV) reduction

    Anti-depressant effect of Paeonia lactiflora Pall extract in rats

    Purpose: To explore the effect of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. extract on depression in rats.Methods: Various doses (150, 300 and 600 mg/kg) of Paeonia lactiflora Pall. extract (PLPE) were orally administered to three groups of rats of 10 each, respectively, suffering from depression for 14 days. Fluoxetine was used as positive control. Tail suspension, forced swimming and monoamine oxidase (MAO) tests were carried out on the rats.Results: A dose-dependent reduction in rat immobility was observed. The effect of PLPE at the highest dose (600 mg/kg) was more potent than that of the reference antidepressant, fluoxetine. PLPE, at a dose ≥ 150 mg/kg significantly inhibited MAO A activity in rat whole brain in a dose-dependent manner (p &lt; 0.01); however, only oral administration of PLPE at a dose of 600 mg/kg produced observable MAO B inhibitory activity in rat brain (p &lt; 0.01). Only fluoxetine showed a tendency to inhibit both MAO A and B activities in animal brain. Neither PLPE nor fluoxetine, at the doses tested, produced significant effects on locomotor activity.Conclusion: The results suggest that Paeonia lactiflora Pall is a potential agent for the treatment of depression in humans.Keywords: Paeonia lactiflora, Depression, Tail suspension test, Forced swimming tes

    CircUBXN7 promotes macrophage infiltration and renal fibrosis associated with the IGF2BP2-dependent SP1 mRNA stability in diabetic kidney disease

    IntroductionInflammatory cell infiltration is a novel hallmark of diabetic kidney disease (DKD), in part, by activated macrophages. Macrophage-to-tubular epithelial cell communication may play an important role in renal fibrosis. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been reported in the pathogenesis of various human diseases involving macrophages activation, including DKD. However, the exact mechanism of circRNAs in macrophage infiltration and renal fibrosis of DKD remains obscure.MethodsIn our study, a novel circRNA circUBXN7 was identified in DKD patients using microarray. The function of circUBXN7 in vitro and in vivo was investigated by qRT-PCR, western blot, and immunofluorescence. Finally, a dual-luciferase reporter assay, ChIP, RNA pull-down, RNA immunoprecipitation and rescue experiments were performed to investigate the mechanism of circUBXN7.ResultsWe demonstrated that the expression of circUBXN7 was significantly upregulated in the plasma of DKD patients and correlated with renal function, which might serve as an independent biomarker for DKD patients. According to investigations, ectopic expression of circUBXN7 promoted macrophage activation, EMT and fibrosis in vitro, and increased macrophage infiltration, EMT, fibrosis and proteinuria in vivo. Mechanistically, circUBXN7 was transcriptionally upregulated by transcription factor SP1 and could reciprocally promote SP1 mRNA stability and activation via directly binding to the m6A-reader IGF2BP2 in DKD.ConclusionCircUBXN7 is highly expressed in DKD patients may provide the potential biomarker and therapeutic target for DKD

    Predisposing factors for predicting the therapeutic response of adenomyosis after uterine artery embolization: serum CA125 levels and accompanying endometriosis

    PURPOSE:We aimed to identify predisposing factors that could help predict the therapeutic response of adenomyosis after uterine artery embolization (UAE).METHODS:This was a retrospective, single-center study of patients admitted to the hospital for adenomyosis between 2013 and 2015. Sixty-eight patients with adenomyosis who underwent UAE with tris-acryl gelatin microspheres were divided into two groups based on their therapeutic response (complete or incomplete necrosis of lesions), and pre- and postprocedural pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Patients were followed up for 12 months after UAE. Improvements in dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia were evaluated based on the symptom relief criteria. Improvement rates in both groups were analyzed and compared. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predisposing factors from retrospectively gathered baseline data that might affect the therapeutic response, including MRI features, clinical symptoms, biochemical index, and accompanying diseases of adenomyosis. Then, a prognostic model was established, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of identified factors was drawn to determine their predictive value.RESULTS:Following UAE, 46 patients (67.6%) showed complete necrosis, while 22 patients (32.4%) showed incomplete necrosis. At 12-month follow-up, dysmenorrhea symptom improvement was seen in 94.7% of complete necrosis and 50% of incomplete necrosis group (P < 0.001); menorrhagia symptom improvement was seen in 96.2% of complete necrosis and 57.1% of incomplete necrosis groups (P = 0.004). Multivariate logistic regression analysis determined serum cancer antigen 125 (CA125) levels (odds ratio [OR], 1.006; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.002–1.010; P = 0.005) and accompanying endometriosis (OR, 6.869; 95% CI, 1.881–25.016; P = 0.004) as predisposing factors. The areas under the ROC curve of CA125, endometriosis, and these two indicators combined were 0.785, 0.708, and 0.845, which corresponded to sensitivities of 95.5%, 66.7%, and 68.2% and specificities of 52.2%, 80.0%, and 87.0% at optimal cutoff values, respectively.CONCLUSION:Symptom relief of dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia for patients with complete necrosis was significantly better than that for patients with incomplete necrosis. Serum CA125 levels and accompanying endometriosis can effectively distinguish complete necrosis from incomplete necrosis
