    Protective effect of Wuling mycelia, alone and in combination with valproic acid, on pentylenetetrazolinduced epilepsy in rats

    Purpose: To determine the inhibitory effects of Wuling mycelia, alone and in combination with valproic acid (VPA) on pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced epileptic seizure in rats, and their protective effects on cognitive impairment.Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups: control (sham), model, Wuling mycelia, VPA and combination groups. Rats in Wuling mycelia group were given oral Wuling mycelia alone at a dose of 594 mg/kg, while those in VPA group were given oral VPA alone at a dose of 189 mg/kg. In the combination group, rats received oral VPA at a dose of 189 mg/kg co-administered with Wuling mycelia at a dose of 594 mg/kg. One hour after the treatments, the control group was injected with physiological saline intraperitoneally, while the other four groups were injected with PTZ solution once a day for 28 days. Subsequently, seizure intensity, cognitive impairment, neuronal loss and hippocampal expressions of IL-1β, NF-ĸB/p65 and TLR4 were determine in all groups.Results: Combined use of Wuling mycelium and VPA significantly reduced the frequency and the grade of seizures (p <0.01), and also decreased the degree of cognitive impairment (p <0.05). There were marked increases in neuronal damage and hippocampal  expression levels of NF-ĸB/p65, TLR4 and IL1β (inflammatory cytokines) in the model group (p < 0.05). However, these changes were  reversed in the combination treatment group (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Wuling mycelia is a potentially effective adjunct drug for the treatment of refractory epilepsy. The underlying mechanism might involve downregulations of NF-ĸB/p65, TLR4 and IL-1β.     Effects of contusion load on cervical spinal cord:A finite element study

    Injury of cervical spine is a common injury of locomotor system usually accompanied by spinal cord injury, however the injury mechanism of contusion load to the spinal cord is not clear. This study aims to investigate its injury mechanism associated with the contusion load, with different extents of spinal cord compression. A finite element model of cervical spinal cord was established and two scenarios of contusion injury loading conditions, i.e. back-to-front and front-to-back loads, were adopted. Four different compression displacements were applied to the middle section of the cervical spinal cord. The distributions of von Mises stress in middle transverse cross section were obtained from the finite element analysis. For the back-to-front loading scenario, the stress concentration was found in the area at and near the central canal and the damage may lead to the central canal syndrome from biomechanical point of view. With the front-to-back load, the maximum von Mises stress located in central canal area of gray matter when subject to 10% compression, whilst it appeared at the anterior horn when the compression increased. For the white matter, the maximum von Mises stress appeared in the area of the anterior funiculus. This leads to complicated symptoms given rise by damage to multiple locations in the cervical spinal cord. The illustrative results demonstrated the need of considering different loading scenarios in understanding the damage mechanisms of the cervical spinal cord, particularly when the loading conditions were given rise by different pathophysiological causes

    Effects of magnesium-modified biochar on soil organic carbon mineralization in citrus orchard

    In order to investigate the carbon sequestration potential of biochar on soil, citrus orchard soils with a forest age of 5 years was taken as the research object, citrus peel biochar (OBC) and magnesium-modified citrus peel biochar (OBC-mg) were selected as additive materials, and organic carbon mineralization experiments were carried out in citrus orchard soil. OBC and OBC-Mg were applied to citrus orchard soils at four application rates (0, 1, 2, and 4%), and incubated at a constant temperature for 100 days. Compared with CK, the cumulative mineralization of soil organic carbon decreased by 5.11% with 1% OBC and 2.14% with 1% OBC-Mg. The application of OBC and OBC-Mg significantly increased the content of soil organic carbon fraction, while the content of soil organic carbon fraction was higher in OBC-Mg treated soil than in OBC treated soil. Meanwhile, the cumulative mineralization of soil organic carbon was significantly and positively correlated with the activities of soil catalase, urease and sucrase. The enzyme activities increased with the cumulative mineralization of organic carbon, and the enzyme activities of the OBC-Mg treated soil were significantly higher than those of the OBC treated soil. The results indicated that the OBC-Mg treatment inhibited the organic carbon mineralization in citrus orchard soils and was more favorable to the increase of soil organic carbon fraction. The Mg-modified approach improved the carbon sequestration potential of biochar for citrus orchard soils and provided favorable support for the theory of soil carbon sink in orchards

    Optical and Ultraviolet Observations of the Very Young Type IIP SN 2014cx in NGC 337

    Extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations are presented for SN 2014cx, a type IIP supernova (SN) exploding in the nearby galaxy NGC 337. The observations are performed in optical and ultraviolet bands, covering from -20 to +400 days from the peak light. The stringent detection limit from prediscovery images suggests that this supernova was actually detected within about 1 day after explosion. Evolution of the very early-time light curve of SN 2014cx is similar to that predicted from a shock breakout and post-shock cooling decline before reaching the optical peak. Our photometric observations show that SN 2014cx has a plateau duration of ~ 100 days, an absolute V-band magnitude of ~ -16.5 mag at t~50 days, and a nickel mass of 0.056+-0.008 Msun. The spectral evolution of SN 2014cx resembles that of normal SNe IIP like SN 1999em and SN 2004et, except that it has a slightly higher expansion velocity (~ 4200 km/s at 50 days). From the cooling curve of photospheric temperature, we derive that the progenitor has a pre-explosion radius of ~ 640 Rsun, consistent with those obtained from SNEC modeling (~ 620 Rsun) and hydrodynamical modeling of the observables (~ 570 Rsun). Moreover, the hydrodynamical simulations yield a total explosion energy of ~ 0.4*10e51 erg, and an ejected mass of ~ 8 Msun. These results indicate that the immediate progenitor of SN 2014cx is likely a red supergiant star with a mass of ~ 10 Msun.Comment: 47 pages, 12 figures and 7 tables. Accepted by Ap

    Preparation and characteristics of the sulfonated chitosan derivatives electrodeposited onto 316l stainless steel surface

    In order to ameliorate the properties of corrosion resistance and achieve applications in anti-biofouling of 316L stainless steel (SS), a sulfated derivative of chitosan was deposited onto stainless steel surface by an electrochemical method. In detail, chitosan-catechol (CS-CT) was synthesised in the hydrochloric acid solution by the Mannich reaction and then electrodeposited on the surface of the polished 316L stainless steel. The chitosan-catechol deposited SS sample was further modified with maleic anhydride and sulfite. The grafting progress was monitored by FTIR, UV spectrophotometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Hydrophilicity and corrosion resistance of modified SS were characterized by water contact angle measurements, Tafel curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The morphology of the SS surface before and after the modification was investigated by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscope. Further, the anti-biofouling performance in terms of the anti-adsorption protein and anti-bacteria effects of all modified SS samples were estimated, and the modified 316L exhibits the capability of lower protein adsorption and improved antibacterial effect.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Genetic Diversity Analysis of Sapindus in China and Extraction of a Core Germplasm Collection Using EST-SSR Markers

    Sapindus is an important forest tree genus with utilization in biodiesel, biomedicine, and it harbors great potential for biochemical engineering applications. For advanced breeding of Sapindus, it is necessary to evaluate the genetic diversity and construct a rationally designed core germplasm collection. In this study, the genetic diversity and population structure of Sapindus were conducted with 18 expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers in order to establish a core germplasm collection from 161 Sapindus accessions. The population of Sapindus showed high genetic diversity and significant population structure. Interspecific genetic variation was significantly higher than intraspecific variation in the Sapindus mukorossi, Sapindus delavayi, and combined Sapindus rarak plus Sapindus rarak var. velutinus populations. S. mukorossi had abundant genetic variation and showed a specific pattern of geographical variation, whereas S. delavayi, S. rarak, and S. rarak var. velutinus showed less intraspecific variation. A core germplasm collection was created that contained 40% of genetic variation in the initial population, comprising 53 S. mukorossi and nine S. delavayi lineages, as well as single representatives of S. rarak and S. rarak var. velutinus. These results provide a germplasm basis and theoretical rationale for the efficient management, conservation, and utilization of Sapindus, as well as genetic resources for joint genomics research in the future.Peer reviewe
