A Practical Approach to Address Pornography Viewing at Olivet Nazarene University
The pornography industry gains new ground and pushes new limits every day in an effort to raise revenues and demand. When pornography is evaluated as an efficient business, the potential for dehumanization, physical and emotional degradation, and the deterioration of a personâs spiritual and relational health become possible. On a small, Christian campus like Olivet Nazarene University (ONU), discussing topics as harmful and popular as pornography should be simple. However, the mindset of fear and silence when admitting weakness as a Christian can deter progress. Through a voluntary survey distributed to current undergraduate students, an overview of the student knowledge, perceptions, and connections to pornography were found. This information was applied by consulting with spiritual leaders on campus to brainstorm realistic, feasible plans of action to most effectively enable students to defend against a culture in which pornography is increasingly prevalent. The results found that not only is pornography a highly shared and misunderstood problem at ONU, but there are many ways students, spiritual leaders, and faculty have attempted to focus on attacking the issue, many of which have failed to generate student response or have disbanded. The primary missing factor is effective collaboration, marked by good intentions but poor follow through. The concept of a Brothersâ Night is created to establish an atmosphere of communication that enables students to invest personally in conversation and progress. Brothersâ Night is a multi-tier approach which embraces the ability of a small, religious college to feel like a part of a family. There is no room for silent addiction or hypocritical Christianity as a part of the Christian brotherhood

VIX Futures Return Decomposition
University of Minnesota M.S. thesis. June 2019. Major: Applied Economics. Advisor: Glenn Pederson. 1 computer file (PDF); iv, 76 pages.VIX futures contracts have produced negative returns. I develop a method to decompose the daily returns of VIX futures contracts in to the return components of roll down and level. I show that roll down is the largest contributor to the negative returns. The return decomposition analysis is carried out across the VIX futures term structure which includes the one- to six-month VIX futures contracts. I use time series regressions to estimate the beta coefficients of the return components relative to the VIX. The results of the regression analyses are used to create a VIX curve strategy that is combined with the S&P 500 Index
Deutlich geringere HĂ€ufigkeiten an hochgradigen SchĂŒrfwunden (25,5 % bzw.
The goal of this study was to analyze incidence and severity of skin abrasions and teat necroses on nursing piglets held on different flooring systems in the farrowing pen. Those results and further influencing factors were taken into consideration in order to find methods to improve ways of animal husbandry for suckling piglets.
The study was carried out on 6 different farms and included 4,029 nursing piglets out of 384 litters. The piglets were individually examined on an average age of 5 days with special prospect of skin abrasions and teat necroses. Teat necroses were evaluated by the number of affected teats. The evaluation of skin abrasions was realised for each individual predisposed location on the limb, the sternum and the chin (0 = no abrasion, 1 to 3 = minor, moderate or severe abrasions). Afterwards these numerical evaluations were added (numbers between 0 and 24 were possible) and were categorized into a grade. Other influencing factors were also taken into consideration and evaluated (e.g. parity, litter size, gender, live weight, the occurrence of PPDS [postpartum dysgalactia syndrome], type of water supply for nursing piglets).
The highest prevalence of severe abrasions on the joints (44.2%) and most teat necroses (13.8%) occured on slats made of triangular section steel (when used underneath the sow and the piglets). Therefore this floor type has to be looked at critically out of welfare aspects.
A lower prevalence of severe abrasions (25.5% respectively 13.9%) and teat necroses (9.4% respectively 8.5%) were found on plastic slats respectively plastic coated steel slats. Those two floor types therefore are to be considered animal friendlier (when used in the piglet area).
The material on which the sow is standing is of less influence on the occurrence of skin alterations in nursing piglets than the material in the piglet area. The results of the combination of coated steel slats in the piglet area and cast iron slats underneath the sow was as good as plastic coated steel bars in the sow area (5.7% respectively 3.3% severe lesions), whereas on triangular section steel slats there was a higher incidence of skin wounds over the joints (13.7%).
An elevation of those slats used underneath the sow (ÂStep twoÂ) and the gender of the piglets didnÂŽt have an influence on the occurrence of skin alterations.
There was a correlation between the occurrence of teat necroses and the live weight of the piglets on the day of examination (on average day 5). Heavier piglets showed a greater number of necrotic teats. The considered cause of this effect is the greater mobility of those piglets in the nursing procedure. The most severe alterations were found on piglets held on triangular section steel slats when used in the piglet and the sow area (28.5% of the animals showed the statement Âteat necrosis and 23.7% showed more than one affected teat).
There was no explainable correlation found between the litter size at the day of examination and the severity or frequency of skin alterations.
Unexpectedly the parity of the sow was of no influence on the occurrence and severity of skin abrasions and teat necroses. Litters of gilts were definitely not affected any more than litters of multiparous sows.
Contrary to our expectations the occurrence of PPDS (postpartum dysgalactia syndrome) didnÂŽt influence the number or severity of skin alterations in this study. It is assumed that this result was dominated by other factors (e.g. flooring modality).
As a summary two statements can be made:
1. According to alterations on the integument of nursing piglets the highest impact is
made by the floor material in the farrowing pen.
2. There are further factors that can also influence the occurrence of lesions but in order to prevent them it is not sufficient to just optimize those factors.
The following recommendations for housing and management are meant to help prevent or at least minimize technopathies like skin abrasions and teat necrosis:
- When a new farrowing systems is built a material should be used in the piglet area that can limit the incidence of skin alterations to a minimum. At the moment preferably plastic coated metal slats should be used.
- The material underneath the sow in a newly built farrowing pen needs to be a compromise. The best material in order to prevent lesions on piglets is - according to the literature (EDWARDS and LIGHTFOOT 1986) - not recommended for the use in sow standing areas. Therefore cast iron can be used as an alternative.
- With regard to the occurrence and severity of skin lesions it is irrelevant if in a new farrowing barn a floor system below the sow is used that is raised (ÂStep twoÂ) or at ground level.
- In existing farrowing pens the age of the flooring is of less influence on skin alterations than the material itself.
The consideration of the following factors can also help to reduce the occurrence of skin abrasions and teat necroses:
- PPDS (postpartum dysgalactia syndrome) in sows should be reduced to a minimum by preventive procedures; if clinical signs occur lactating sows have to be treated right away.
- The access to Âopen water by offering piglet dishes with clean water within the first days of life shows positive effects on weight gain and can help to prevent alterations of the skin.
- The parity of sows doesnÂŽt have a mentionable influence on the occurrence of skin lesions or teat necrosis; an individual observation of the animals should be taken out.
- Piglets of a higher weight than their litter mates show more teat necroses; as long as there is no proof found that those teat necrosis are an unimportant injury on future breeding gilts the teats of breeding piglets should be covered by taped in the first few days
Shigella flexneri utilize the spectrin cytoskeleton during invasion and comet tail generation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The spectrin cytoskeleton is emerging as an important host cell target of enteric bacterial pathogens. Recent studies have identified a crucial role for spectrin and its associated proteins during key pathogenic processes of <it>Listeria monocytogenes </it>and <it>Salmonella </it>Typhimurium infections. Here we investigate the involvement of spectrin cytoskeletal components during the pathogenesis of the invasive pathogen <it>Shigella flexneri.</it></p> <p>Results</p> <p>Immunofluorescent microscopy reveals that protein 4.1 (p4.1), but not adducin or spectrin, is robustly recruited to sites of <it>S. flexneri </it>membrane ruffling during epithelial cell invasion. Through siRNA-mediated knockdowns, we identify an important role for spectrin and the associated proteins adducin and p4.1 during <it>S. flexneri </it>invasion. Following internalization, all three proteins are recruited to the internalized bacteria, however upon generation of actin-rich comet tails, we observed spectrin recruitment to those structures in the absence of adducin or p4.1.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings highlight the importance of the spectrin cytoskeletal network during <it>S. flexneri </it>pathogenesis and further demonstrate that pathogenic events that were once thought to exclusively recruit the actin cytoskeletal system require additional cytoskeletal networks.</p
Succession versus harvest in family businesses: The role of passion and family involvement in exit strategies
Through this research, I investigate the influence of leadership passion and family involvement on family businessesâ exit strategies (succession versus harvest). I execute two studies to do this: 1) a survey of 118 family business family managers, and 2) a survey of 33 private equity/investment professionals who acquire family businesses. In Study 1, I analyze how family leadership passion influences firmsâ strategic choices toward succession versus harvesting. I also investigate whether family involvement in firms moderates the relationship between leadership passion and exit strategy. In Study 2, I use a postdictive survey to uncover how private equity investors view the value of leadership passion and family involvement in their intent to invest in family firms
Smad2/3 potentiate cell identity conversions with master transcription factors
The exogenous expression of master transcription factors (TFs) to drive cell identity
changes is an exciting and powerful approach to cell and tissue engineering. Yet, the
generation of desired cell types is often plagued by inefficiency and inability to produce
mature cell types. Through investigations of the molecular mechanisms of induced
pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) generation, I discovered that expression of constitutively
active Smad2/3 (Smad2CA/3CA), together with the Yamanaka factors, could
dramatically improve the efficiency of reprogramming. Mechanistically, SMAD3
interacted with both co-activators and reprogramming factors, bridging their interaction
during reprogramming. Because SMAD2/3 interact with a multitude of master TFs in
different cell types, I tested the conversions of B cells to macrophages, myoblasts to
adipocytes, and human fibroblasts to neurons. Remarkably, each conversion system was
markedly enhanced when the master TFs were co-expressed with Smad3CA. These
results revealed the existence of shared molecular mechanisms underlying diverse TF-mediated
cellular conversions, and demonstrated SMAD2/3 as a widely applicable cofactor
that potentiates the generation of diverse cell types with profound efficiency and
maturity
