    Operations management system

    The objective of an operations management system is to provide an orderly and efficient method to operate and maintain aerospace vehicles. Concepts are described for an operations management system and the key technologies are highlighted which will be required if this capability is brought to fruition. Without this automation and decision aiding capability, the growing complexity of avionics will result in an unmanageable workload for the operator, ultimately threatening mission success or survivability of the aircraft or space system. The key technologies include expert system application to operational tasks such as replanning, equipment diagnostics and checkout, global system management, and advanced man machine interfaces. The economical development of operations management systems, which are largely software, will require advancements in other technological areas such as software engineering and computer hardware

    A Bayesian spatio-temporal model of panel design data: airborne particle number concentration in Brisbane, Australia

    This paper outlines a methodology for semi-parametric spatio-temporal modelling of data which is dense in time but sparse in space, obtained from a split panel design, the most feasible approach to covering space and time with limited equipment. The data are hourly averaged particle number concentration (PNC) and were collected, as part of the Ultrafine Particles from Transport Emissions and Child Health (UPTECH) project. Two weeks of continuous measurements were taken at each of a number of government primary schools in the Brisbane Metropolitan Area. The monitoring equipment was taken to each school sequentially. The school data are augmented by data from long term monitoring stations at three locations in Brisbane, Australia. Fitting the model helps describe the spatial and temporal variability at a subset of the UPTECH schools and the long-term monitoring sites. The temporal variation is modelled hierarchically with penalised random walk terms, one common to all sites and a term accounting for the remaining temporal trend at each site. Parameter estimates and their uncertainty are computed in a computationally efficient approximate Bayesian inference environment, R-INLA. The temporal part of the model explains daily and weekly cycles in PNC at the schools, which can be used to estimate the exposure of school children to ultrafine particles (UFPs) emitted by vehicles. At each school and long-term monitoring site, peaks in PNC can be attributed to the morning and afternoon rush hour traffic and new particle formation events. The spatial component of the model describes the school to school variation in mean PNC at each school and within each school ground. It is shown how the spatial model can be expanded to identify spatial patterns at the city scale with the inclusion of more spatial locations.Comment: Draft of this paper presented at ISBA 2012 as poster, part of UPTECH projec

    A Teacher\u27s Trouble: Risk, Responsibility and Rebellion

    What follows is an edited transcript of a session at the 1995 Annual Meeting of the Association of American Law Schools, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, January 7, 1995. The meeting was a joint plenary session of the AALS Section on Professional Responsibility and the Section on Clinical Legal Education. The meeting was planned and the role plays were written by Professors Margaret Martin Barry and Lisa Lerman of The Catholic University of America and Professor Homer La Rue of Howard University. The purpose of the program was to foster interaction among teachers of professional responsibility and clinical teachers about issues that arise in both clinical and non-clinical teaching. As Professor Sandy Ogilvy of Catholic University said in introducing the session, the planners wanted to bring together the perspective on the profession of the professional responsibility teachers, with the expertise in teaching methodology of the clinicians, with the thought that each group would be interested in what the other group had to say. Interesting ethical issues arise daily in clinical programs, and the planners wanted to encourage cross-fertilization between these two fields and increased collaboration within law schools between clinical teachers and teachers of professional responsibility. In developing the three role plays presented in this program, the planners selected issues that raise ethical or professional dilemmas for the law teachers as well as for their students. The transcript of this discussion explores only some of the issues potentially raised by the role play scenarios. The editors of the Clinical Law Review invite readers to submit commentary reacting to the issues raised in this discussion, or raising other issues suggested by the role plays but not fully discussed by the participants. The Review will consider such submissions for possible publication in its next issue. Readers might also consider initiating further dialogue with colleagues through one of the relevant internet listservs (lawclinic, legalethics or lawprof); such dialogue also may be submitted for possible publication

    A compact two-dimensional grating coupler used as a polarization splitter

    We demonstrate a novel polarization splitter based on a two-dimensional grating etched in a silicon-on-insulator waveguide. The device couples orthogonal modes from a single-mode optical fiber into identical modes of two planar ridge waveguides. The extinction ratio is better than 18 dB in the wavelength range of 1530-1560 nm and the coupling efficiency is approximately 20%. The device is very compact and couples light only to transverse-electric modes of the planar waveguides. Therefore, it may be used in a polarization diversity configuration to implement a polarization insensitive photonic integrated circuit based on photonic crystal waveguides
