    The article presents the concepts and the tools involved in the interactive design of artistic screens. The screen elements are derived from a small set of analytical contours provided by the screen designer. We present the requirements that these contours must satisfy in order to generate consistent screens. Software tools have been developed which provide automatic means for verifying and enforcing these constraints.     Specifying color differences in a linear color space (LEF)

    This work presents a novel way of generating color differences for synthesizing artistically screened color images. A single color is specified by interacting with the mouse alternately on a constant luminance plane and on a constant hue plane within the LEF color space (the orthogonal space formed by the RGB cube's black-white axis (L) and by its E and F chrominance axes). By interactively selecting a second color point, a color difference is specified. We present a method for extrapolating this color difference throughout all colors of the RGB cube so as to generate consistent color differences, i.e. smoothly varying similar color differences for different colors. The produced artistically screened color patches show that significant luminance differences always generate significant visually perceived differences, whereas significant hue and/or saturation differences do not always generate significant visually perceived differences

    How does the geodesic rule really work for global symmetry breaking first order phase transitions?

    The chain of events usually understood to lead to the formation of topological defects during phase transitions is known as the Kibble mechanism. A central component of the mechanism is the so-called ``geodesic rule''. Although in the Abelian Higgs model the validity of the geodesic rule has been questioned recently, it is known to be valid on energetic grounds for a global U(1) symmetry breaking transition. However, even for these globally symmetric models no dynamical analisys of the rule has been carried to this date, and some points as to how events proceed still remain obscure. This paper tries to clarify the dynamics of the geodesic rule in the context of a global U(1) model. With an appropriate ansatz for the field modulus we find a family of analytical expressions, phase walls, that accounts for both geodesic and nongeodesic configurations. We then show how the latter ones are unstable and decay into the former by nucleating pairs of defects. Finnally, we try to give a physical perspective of how the geodesic rule might really work in these transitions.Comment: 10 pages, 9 multiple figre

    Innovative methodology to transfer conventional GC-MS heroin profiling to UHPLC-MS/MS

    Nowadays, in forensic laboratories, heroin profiling is frequently carried out by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This analytical technique is well established, provides good sensitivity and reproducibility, and allows the use of large databases. Despite those benefits, recently introduced analytical techniques, such as ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC), could offer better chromatographic performance, which needs to be considered to increase the analysis throughput for heroin profiling. With the latter, chromatographic conditions were optimized through commercial modeling software and two atmospheric pressure ionization sources were evaluated. Data obtained from UHPLC-MS/MS were thus transferred, thanks to mathematical models to mimic GC-MS data. A calibration and a validation set of representative heroin samples were selected among the database to establish a transfer methodology and assess the models' abilities to transfer using principal component analysis and hierarchical classification analysis. These abilities were evaluated by computing the frequency of successful classification of UHPLC-MS/MS data among GC-MS database. Seven mathematical models were tested to adjust UHPLC-MS/MS data to GC-MS data. A simplified mathematical model was finally selected and offered a frequency of successful transfer equal to 95%.     Do bipolar subjects' responses to personality questionnaires lack reliability? Evidence from the PsyCoLaus study.

    Differences in personality scores between subjects with and without mood disorders might result from response biases rather than specific personality traits per se. The aim of this study was to compare subjects with bipolar disorders (BPD) to non-bipolar subjects in terms of response quality to the NEO-FFI. Using data from the population-based cohort study PsyCoLaus, subjects were compared in terms of responses to the NEO-FFI, and indices of response quality were calculated. Hierarchical regression analyses were performed and controlled for sociodemographic factors, depressive episodes, dysthymia, anxiety disorders and substance use disorders. Consistent with the literature, subjects with BPD had higher scores in neuroticism and openness, and lower scores in conscientiousness. However, significant differences were measured for response reliability and validity. In particular, the indices of response quality including response reliability were lower in subjects with BPD suggesting that bipolar subjects might have more difficulty in providing consistent answers throughout questionnaires. However, regression models resulted in small associations between mania/hypomania and response quality, and showed that differences in response quality were mainly attributable to correlates of BPD instead of the presence of mania/hypomania itself.     Single-run separation of closely related cationic and anionic compounds by CE-ESI-MS: application to the simultaneous analysis of melamine and its analogs in milk

    In recent years, two adulteration incidents concerning the addition of melamine, a nitrogen-rich industrial small polar compound, to pet food and infant formula products have occurred in China. These issues prompted laboratories to develop methods for the analysis of melamine and related compounds in a wide variety of food products and ingredients. In this context, a CE-ESI-MS method was developed to simultaneously analyze melamine and its related products (ammeline, ammelide and cyanuric acid) that possess close physico-chemical properties. This method allows the simultaneous analysis of both cations and anions in a single run, using CE to divide the run into two time segments in normal polarity mode. For this purpose, ESI polarity was switched once during the run, increasing sensitivity and data quality. The method was applied to spiked powdered milk and melamine-contaminated powdered milk, with two sample preparation procedures

    Psychiatric symptoms and response quality to self-rated personality tests: Evidence from the PsyCoLaus study.

    Despite the fact that research has demonstrated consistent associations between self-rated measures of personality dimensions and mental disorders, little has been undertaken to investigate the relation between psychiatric symptoms and response patterns to self-rated tests. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between psychiatric symptoms and response quality using indices from our functional method. A sample of 1,784 participants from a Swiss population-based cohort completed a personality inventory (NEO-FFI) and a symptom checklist of 90 items (SCL-90-R). Different indices of response quality were calculated based on the responses given to the NEO-FFI. Associations among the responses to indices of response quality, sociodemographic characteristics and the SCL-90-R dimensions were then established. Psychiatric symptoms were associated with several important differences in response quality, questioning subjects' ability to provide valid information using self-rated instruments. As suggested by authors, psychiatric symptoms seem associated with differences in personality scores. Nonetheless, our study shows that symptoms are also related to differences in terms of response patterns as sources of differences in personality scores. This could constitute a bias for clinical assessment. Future studies could still determine whether certain subpopulations of subjects are more unable to provide valid information to self-rated questionnaires than others

    Possible large phase in psi(2S) -> 1-0- Decays

    The strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes are analyzed on the basis of the measurements of J/psi, psi(2S) -> 1-0- in e+e- experiments. The currently available experimental information is revised with inclusion of the contribution from e+e- -> gamma * -> 1-0- . The study shows that a large phase around minus 90 degree between the strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes could not be ruled out by the experimental data for psi(2S).Comment: 4 page
