Municipal Treated Wastewater Irrigation: Microbiological Risk Evaluation

    Get PDF
Municipal wastewater for irrigation, though treated, can contain substances and pathogens toxic for humans and animals. Pathogens, although not harmful from an agronomical aspect, undoubtedly represent a major concern with regards to sanitary and hygienic profile. In fact, vegetable crops irrigated with treated wastewater exalt the risk of infection since these products can also be eaten raw, as well as transformed or cooked. Practically, the evaluation of the microbiological risk is important to verify if the microbial limits imposed by law for treated municipal wastewater for irrigation, are valid, thus justifying the treatments costs, or if they are too low and, therefore, they don' t justify them. Different probabilistic models have been studied to assess the microbiological risk; among these, the Beta-Poisson model resulted the most reliable. Thus, the Dipartimento di Scienze delle Produzioni Vegetali of the University of Bari, which has been carrying out researches on irrigation with municipal filtered wastewater for several years, considered interesting to verify if the microbial limits imposed by the italian law n.185/03 are too severe, estimating the biological risk by the probabilistic Beta-Poisson model. Results of field trials on vegetable crops irrigated by municipal filtered wastewater, processed by the Beta-Poisson model, show that the probability to get infection and/or illness is extremely low, and that the actual italian microbial limits are excessively restrictive

Development of DTT single null divertor scenario

Abstract This paper focuses on scrape-off layer and divertor modelling of the medium-density single-null scenario of the Divertor Test Tokamak facility (DTT), under construction in Italy. The modelling was performed using the 2D coupled fluid-Monte Carlo code SOLEDGE2D-EIRENE. For DTT pump designing, neutral pressure at the pump aperture below the dome is calculated in deuterium-only cases as well as with impurity seeding with various puffing levels. This scenario analysis also allowed the characterization of detachment in DTT and the influence of pumping on detachment itself. Two different radiating impurities, neon and nitrogen, were tested in the high power scenario to evaluate the minimum impurity concentration required to achieve sustainable conditions at DTT divertor. The sensitivity of the model was studied by varying the impurity concentration; the model shows a hysteresis-like behaviour between the impurity influx and the total impurity content by which detachment is strongly influenced

First principles theory of chiral dichroism in electron microscopy applied to 3d ferromagnets

Recently it was demonstrated (Schattschneider et al., Nature 441 (2006), 486), that an analogue of the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiment can be performed with the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The new phenomenon has been named energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD). In this work we present a detailed ab initio study of the chiral dichroism in the Fe, Co and Ni transition elements. We discuss the methods used for the simulations together with the validity and accuracy of the treatment, which can, in principle, apply to any given crystalline specimen. The dependence of the dichroic signal on the sample thickness, accuracy of the detector position and the size of convergence and collection angles is calculated.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Physical Review

Enhanced Inflation in the Dirac-Born-Infeld framework

We consider the Einstein equations within the DBI scenario for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime without a cosmological constant. We derive the inflationary scenario by applying the symmetry transformations which preserve the form of the Friedmann and conservation equations. These form invariance transformations generate a symmetry group parametrized by the Lorentz factor \ga. We explicitly obtain an inflationary scenario by the cooperative effect of adding energy density into the Friedmann equation. For the case of a constant Lorentz factor, and under the slow roll assumption, we find the transformation rules for the scalar and tensor power spectra of perturbations as well as their ratio under the action of the form invariance symmetry group. Within this case and due to its relevance for the inflationary paradigm, we find the general solution of the dynamical equations for a DBI field driven by an exponential potential and show a broad set of inflationary solutions. The general solution can be split into three subsets and all these behave asymptotically as a power law solution at early and at late times.Comment: 9 pages, revtex 4.

Modern approach to the treatment of dry eye, a complex multifactorial disease: a P.I.C.A.S.S.O. board review

Dry eye disease (DED) is a growing public health concern affecting quality of life and visual function, with a significant socio-economic impact. It is characterised by the loss of homoeostasis, resulting in tear film instability, hyperosmolarity and inflammation of the ocular surface. If the innate immune response is unable to cope with internal bodily or environmental adverse conditions, the persistent, self-maintaining vicious circle of inflammation leads to the chronic form of the disease. Treatment of DED should be aimed at the restoration of the homoeostasis of the ocular surface system. A proper diagnostic approach is fundamental to define the relevance and importance of each of the DED main pathogenic factors, namely tear film instability, epithelial damage and inflammation. Consideration also needs to be given concerning two other pathogenic elements: lid margin changes and nerve damage. All the factors that maintain the vicious circle of DED in the patient's clinical presentation have to be considered and possibly treated simultaneously. The treatment should be long-lasting and personalised since it has to be adapted to the different clinical conditions observed along the course of the disease. Since DED treatment is frequently unable to provide fast and complete relief from symptoms, empathy with patients and willingness to explain to them the natural history of the disease are mandatory to improve patients' compliance. Furthermore, patients should be instructed about the possible need to increase the frequency and/or change the type of treatment according to the fluctuation of symptoms, following a preplanned rescue regimen

Development and laboratory testing of a self-excited synchronous machines without permanent magnets

    Get PDF
Today, self-excited synchronous machines are the object of increasing interest because they use neither brushes nor permanent magnets. In fact, the price of rare earth metals is considerably high and still raising. This is the main reason why researchers are looking for suitable alternatives to permanent magnets in the construction of rotating electrical machinery. This paper deals with the design and laboratory testing of a synchronous machine with an efficient layout and an economic construction. The proposed self-excited machine exploits the space harmonics of the magneto-motive force to produce the excitation field. The model analysis is based on the computation of the back EMFs that are associated to the magneto motive force components. The mathematical model suggests an easy way to decouple the rotor windings. The machine has been built and experimental tests have been performed in order to validate the electrical behavior

Bilateral Severe Corneal Ulcer in a Patient with Lung Adenocarcinoma Treated with Gefitinib

We describe the case of Gefitinib-related bilateral corneal perforation. An 86-year-old female patient had bilateral painless and progressive vision loss due to neurotrophic corneal ulcer, following a 2-month treatment with Gefitinib, a selective epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor for metastatic adenocarcinoma of the lung with confirmed EGFR gene mutation. She had no signs of ocular infection, inflammation, or lid problems to account for the development of corneal damage. Neurotrophic ulcer evolved into a frank perforation in one eye and an impending perforation on the other eye. EGFR inhibitors have been associated with dry eye, epithelial erosions, ulcerative keratitis, and corneal edema. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of bilateral severe corneal ulcer due to Gefitinib. The patient went on to have bilateral corneal graft surgery. This case aims to raise awareness among ophthalmologists and oncologists of the association between EGFR inhibitors, corneal neurotrophic ulcers, and possible evolution in corneal perforation

Microstructural and Mechanical Properties of Al2O3 and Al2O3/TiB2 Ceramics Consolidated by Plasma Pressure Compaction

Alumina oxide ceramics were produced by plasma pressure compaction (P2C) sintering process. Two types of pure α-alumina (Al2O3) and a mixture of alumina and titanium diboride (TiB2) powders were used as starting materials. Microstructure and mechanical properties, namely hardness, elastic modulus, and fracture toughness, were analyzed and correlated to the type of the sintered powders and the adopted manufacturing route. The microstructural development and the chemical composition variation induced by the sintering process were assessed by using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Nano-indentation and Chevron notch beam techniques were adopted to estimate the mechanical properties of the sintered ceramics. The conducted analyses show the capability of P2C technique to produce sound alumina ceramics. Pure alumina bulks exhibit a good level of compaction and mechanical properties close to those achievable with conventional sintering processes, such as hot isostatic pressing or spark plasma sintering. No significant alterations in the chemical composition of the ceramics were observed. The addition of the titanium diboride in the alumina powders caused a moderate increase in the grain size lowering the hardness and Young’s modulus of the sintered alumina and, at the same time, increased its fracture toughness to the occurrence of toughening mechanisms, like crack bridging and crack deflection
