Italian Art in Yugoslavia from 1961 to 1967: An Overlooked Chronicle

    Get PDF
In the 1950s and 1960s, the relationship between Italy and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia improved despite the Cold War. For the Italian artists involved in the New Tendencies, this new situation provided opportunities for recognition as an alternative to Art Informel, the dominant style in the international art market. Getulio Alviani, Enzo Mari and Eugenio Carmi, are three of the key Italian artists in this period who exhibited in Yugoslavian museums and galleries. Using new archival material, this paper sheds light on a unique postwar revival of Constructivism within a peripheral artist network far from New York and Paris

Dall'Italia alla Croazia e ritorno: nuove tendenze vs nuova tendenza.

Since 1959 an intellectual friendship between Umbro Apollonio and Vera Horvat Pintarić signed a fundamental step in the Italian - Croatian art relations during socialist Yugoslavia. That relationship intensified in 1963, through the exhibitions Nove tendencije held in Zagreb from 1961 to 1973, allowing Apollonio a direct knowledge of what was happening, who developed a personal critical theory that he named as the new tendency. Its primary actions were to recall the historical avant-garde, employing technologic materials, approaching industrial production and the will to modify social reality. Through the exchanged letters between Apollonio and Horvat Pintarić during the Sixties, this article aims at analyzing and reconstructing the decisive steps that brought Italian programmed art to Croatia and vice versa the knowledge of Yugoslav art to Italy. Furthermore, this study will compare the primary sources of the time with the subsequent historiographic and critical reworking of Lea Vergine, who in the 1980s would have played a fundamental role in relaunching the new trend, albeit in controversy with Horvat Pintarić.

Corporate governance and performance: An analysis of Italian listed companies

In recent years, both corporate governance and performance management have been subjected to considerable changes. In this dynamic context, it is interesting to study the evolution of the relationship between performance and governance. Does governance still affect performance? The purpose of this paper is to verify the presence and intensity (extent) of the relationship between corporate governance and performance in Italian listed companies by using both accounting and nonaccounting performance measures. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of prior firm performance on board composition and governance structure of some companies listed on the Italian stock exchange, analysing how a governance approach influences the performance of sample companies. For the research the methodology used is quantitative and we used regression analysis on a sample of 23 Italian listed companies: mechanical companies and public utilities to find that the company's performance was positively related to the size of the board. The empirical analysis conducted allowed us to verify the hypothesis according to which the increase in Corporate Governance Best Practices influences company performance. However, the results we have received do not allow us to arrive at completely unequivocal interpretations. The results showed we have received do not allow us to arrive at completely unequivocal interpretations; the main limit is the sample size used in this study was relatively small

First results on the evaluation of the ground-cover biodiversity in an agroforestry poultry system

The first results on the impact of hen grazing on ground cover composition and biodiversity of two hazelnut orchards (sites A and B) in the southern Italy are presented. The selected sites were characterized by different size and environmental conditions that were, respectively for A and B: area, 4 and 5 ha; altitude, 525 and 660 m a.s.l.; annual mean temperature, +12°C and +13°C; annual precipitation: 730 and 780 mm. Besides, ground covers of the sites were different for plant species presence and distribution. In each site three 120 m2 areas were considered, each of which was provided with a mobile coop (5 hens/m2) to house during the night ten 25-week-old commercial egg-laying chickens. The trial started the first decade of May 2019. The use of hen grazing affected quantitatively and qualitatively the herbaceous stratum of the study sites, as the number of taxa composing the ground cover decreased in both sites, whereas the relative frequencies varied (increased or decreased) according to the taxon. By computing different indices of alpha diversity, we observed significant differences in species richness and diversity after hen grazing only in one site. However, the value of the qualitative Sørensen index showed a high overlap in the assemblage of ground cover before and after hen grazing in both sites. By comparing the sites, we found that, at the beginning of the trial, the ground cover of one site was richer and more diverse compared to the other site; however, the reverse situation occurred after hen grazing. Overall, our results indicate that integrating fruit trees with poultry may play a positive role in an agroforestry context, mainly in terms of control of vegetation growth

repair of congenital mitral valve dysplasia in infants and children is it always possible

Objectives: Surgical management of congenital malformation of the mitral valve (MV) in the pediatric age group remains a therapeutic challenge for the wide spectrum of the morphological abnormalities and the high incidence of associated cardiac anomalies. We reviewed our experience so as to assess whether MV conservative surgery is always advisable and its results are superior to MV replacement. Methods: Thirty-four consecutive children (20 male and 14 female) with a mean age of 5.9 years (range 45 days‐18 years) treated surgically for congenital MV disease between January 1987 and June 1999. Four patients (11.7%) were under 12 months of age, while 21 patients (62%) were younger than 5 years. Twenty-two patients presented with MV incompetence (or prevalent incompetence), while 12 presented with stenosis (or prevalent stenosis). Associated cardiac lesions were present in 22 patients (62.8%). Results: Mitral valve reconstruction was possible in all. There were no operative deaths. Three patients required reoperation for MV restenosis (a re-repair in one and MV replacement with mechanical prosthesis in two) 4 months, 27 months and 5.6 years after repair with no operative deaths. There was only one late death for prosthetic valve thrombosis. Follow-up data reveal that the 33 surviving patients are asymptomatic and well 4 months‐12 years (mean 72 months) after surgery. At 12 years, actuarial survival and freedom from reoperation are 96.8 and 85.9%, respectively. Echocardiography performed in all of them shows no or mild incompetence or stenosis in 26 (78%), while residual moderate MV incompetence persists in six. Conclusions: Our experience indicates that MV reconstructive procedures in infants and children with congenital MV dysplasia may be effective and reliable with low mortality and low incidence of reoperation rate. Mitral valve repair should always be attempted, especially in infants, despite the frequent severity of MV dysplasia, to avoid the drawbacks of the currently available prostheses. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. RIP-Chip analysis supports different roles for AGO2 and GW182 proteins in recruiting and processing microRNA targets

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules mediating the translational repression and degradation of target mRNAs in the cell. Mature miRNAs are used as a template by the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to recognize the complementary mRNAs to be regulated. To discern further RISC functions, we analyzed the activities of two RISC proteins, AGO2 and GW182, in the MCF-7 human breast cancer cell lin

Estimation of the Aerodynamic Force Induced by Vaneless Diffuser Rotating Stall in Centrifugal Compressor Stages

    Get PDF
Abstract Rotating stall in centrifugal compressors not only adversely affects the performance before surge, but also can generate high subsynchronous vibrations, marking the minimum flow limit of a machine. Recent works presented an experimental approach to estimate the stall force induced by the unbalanced pressure field in a vaneless diffuser using dynamic pressure measurements. In this study, the results of a 3D-unsteady simulation of a radial stage model were used to estimate the stall force and to compare it with the approximation obtained with an "experimental-like" approach. Results showed that: a) the experimental approach, using an ensemble average approach for transposing data between time and space domains provides sufficiently accurate results; b) the momentum contribution, neglected in experiments, gives negligible contribution to the final intensity of the stall force
