Toxicologic evaluation of the migration of a plasticizer, DI (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) from vinyl plastics

The intravenous administration of DEHP solubilized by means of a number of different detergents leads to respiratory distress and death in rats. At autopsy the lungs are grossly enlarged, edamatous, and hemorrhagic. Light and electron microscopic evaluation of the lungs indicate engorgement of the interalveolar septa with edema fluid and polymorphonuclear leucocytes, degranulation of the leukocytes, and progessive destruction of the endothelial and epithelial cells. Consistent with the conclusion that solubilized DEHP results in a syndrome of "shock lung" is the associated massive fall in arterial blood pressure and the prevention of the lung pathology by pretreatment with pharmacologic doses of an antiinflammatory steroid, methylprednisolone. Evidence is also presented that suggests that the DEHP inadvertently administered to humans during transfusions is also in a solubilized state in the plasma

Macroscopic detection of the strong stochasticity threshold in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains of oscillators

The largest Lyapunov exponent of a system composed by a heavy impurity embedded in a chain of anharmonic nearest-neighbor Fermi-Pasta-Ulam oscillators is numerically computed for various values of the impurity mass MM. A crossover between weak and strong chaos is obtained at the same value ϵT\epsilon_{_T} of the energy density ϵ\epsilon (energy per degree of freedom) for all the considered values of the impurity mass MM. The threshold \epsi lon_{_T} coincides with the value of the energy density ϵ\epsilon at which a change of scaling of the relaxation time of the momentum autocorrelation function of the impurity ocurrs and that was obtained in a previous work ~[M. Romero-Bastida and E. Braun, Phys. Rev. E {\bf65}, 036228 (2002)]. The complete Lyapunov spectrum does not depend significantly on the impurity mass MM. These results suggest that the impurity does not contribute significantly to the dynamical instability (chaos) of the chain and can be considered as a probe for the dynamics of the system to which the impurity is coupled. Finally, it is shown that the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the chain has a crossover from weak to strong chaos at the same value of the energy density that the crossover value ϵT\epsilon_{_T} of largest Lyapunov exponent. Implications of this result are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, revtex4 styl

How well do we know the neutron structure function?

We present a detailed analysis of the uncertainty in the neutron F2n structure function extracted from inclusive deuteron and proton deep-inelastic scattering data. The analysis includes experimental uncertainties as well as uncertainties associated with the deuteron wave function, nuclear smearing, and nucleon off-shell corrections. Consistently accounting for the Q^2 dependence of the data and calculations, and restricting the nuclear corrections to microscopic models of the deuteron, we find significantly smaller uncertainty in the extracted F2n/F2p ratio than in previous analyses. In addition to yielding an improved extraction of the neutron structure function, this analysis also provides an important baseline that will allow future, model-independent extractions of neutron structure to be used to examine nuclear medium effects in the the deuteron.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

Acute pulmonary pathology and sudden death in rats following the intravenous administration of the plasticizer, DI (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, solubilized with Tween surfactants

Intravenous administration of 200-300 mg/kg of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) solubilized in aqueous solutions of several Tween surfactants caused respiratory distress in rats. There was a dose-dependent lethality with death generally occurring within 90 minutes after injection. The lungs from DEHP:Tween treated animals were enlarged, generally darkened, and in some cases showed hemorrhagic congestion. Neither the overt symptoms nor the morphologic alterations resulting from DEHP:Tween administration could be reproduced by intravenous administration of aqueous Tween solutions alone. The absence of pulmonary abnormalities following the intravenous administration of DEHP as an aqueous emulsion given either alone or even as soon as 2 minutes after pretreatment with Tween 80, suggests that the specific in vivo interaction between DEHP and Tween surfactants depends on the prior formation of water-soluble micelles of DEHP

Three-dimensional calculation of shuttle charging in polar orbit

The charged particles environment in polar orbit can be of sufficient intensity to cause spacecraft charging. In order to gain a quantitative understanding of such effects, the Air Force is developing POLAR, a computer code which simulates in three dimensions the electrical interaction of large space vehicles with the polar ionospheric plasma. It models the physical processes of wake generation, ambient ion collection, precipitating auroral electron fluxes, and surface interactions, including secondary electron generation and backscattering, which lead to vehicle charging. These processes may be followed dynamically on a subsecond timescale so that the rapid passage through intense auroral arcs can be simulated. POLAR models the ambient plasma as isotropic Maxwellian electrons and ions (0+, H+), and allows for simultaneous precipitation of power-law, energetic Maxwellian, and accelerated Gaussian distributions of electrons. Magnetic field effects will be modeled in POLAR but are currently ignored

The ionization structure of the Orion nebula: Infrared line observations and models

Observations of the (O III) 52 and 88 micron lines and the (N III) 57 micron line have been made at 6 positions and the (Ne III) 36 micron line at 4 positions in the Orion Nebula to probe its ionization structure. The measurements, made with a -40" diameter beam, were spaced every 45" in a line south from and including the Trapezium. The wavelength of the (Ne III) line was measured to be 36.013 + or - 0.004 micron. Electron densities and abundance ratios of N(++)/O(++) have been calculated and compared to other radio and optical observations. Detailed one component and two component (bar plus halo) spherical models were calculated for exciting stars with effective temperatures of 37 to 40,000K and log g = 4.0 and 4.5. Both the new infrared observations and the visible line measurements of oxygen and nitrogen require T sub eff approx less than 37,000K. However, the double ionized neon requires a model with T sub eff more than or equal to 39,000K, which is more consistent with that inferred from the radio flux or spectral type. These differences in T sub eff are not due to effects of dust on the stellar radiation field, but are probably due to inaccuracies in the assumed stellar spectrum. The observed N(++)/O(++) ratio is almost twice the N(+)/O(+) ratio. The best fit models give N/H = 8.4 x 10 to the -5 power, O/H = 4.0 x 10 to the -4 power, and Ne/H = 1.3 x 10 to the -4 power. Thus neon and nitrogen are approximately solar, but oxygen is half solar in abundance. From the infrared O(++) lines it is concluded that the ionization bar results from an increase in column depth rather than from a local density enhancement
