A Circumstellar Disc in a High-Mass Star Forming Region

We present an edge-on Keplerian disc model to explain the main component of the 12.2 and 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission detected toward NGC7538-IRS1 N. The brightness distribution and spectrum of the line of bright masers are successfully modeled with high amplification of background radio continuum emission along velocity coherent paths through a maser disc. The bend seen in the position-velocity diagram is a characteristic signature of differentially rotating discs. For a central mass of 30 solar masses, suggested by other observations, our model fixes the masing disc to have inner and outer radii of about 350 AU and 1000 AU.Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

Correlation of qEEG with PET in schizophrenia

    Get PDF
PET relative metabolism was correlated with quantitative EEG in 9 schizophrenic patients. The PET metabolic regions of interest were the frontal lobes, thalamus and basal ganglia, and right and left temporal lobes. Significant positive correlations were seen for the frontal lobes and delta EEG power, and alpha power with subcortical metabolism. The physiologic plausibility of those correlations is discussed with reference to the possible effect of neuroleptic medication

Calculation And Verification Of Torsional Natural Frequencies For Turbomachinery Equipment Strings

    Get PDF
PaperPg. 151-156.The analytical techniques used to design turbomachinery equipment strings from a torsional dynamics standpoint are discussed. Consideration is also given to both torsional natural frequency placement and potential excitation sources. Three cases are presented wherein the torsional natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated via Holzer Transfer Matrix computer code and the frequencies then verified by measurement on the actual hardware. The accuracy of both analytical and measuring techniques is discussed from the aspect of the minimum acceptable interference margins for acceptable equipment operation

Multidimensionality of Entrepreneurial Firm-level Processes: Do the Dimensions Covary?

    Get PDF
Covariance (or not) among the first-order dimensions of firm-level entrepreneurial processes underpins a fundamental and non-trivial difference between the entrepreneurial orientation and entrepreneurial posture constructs. Utilizing a typology developed for multi-dimensional constructs, we operationalized each construct according to its specific conceptualization (relationships among the dimensions) and compared and contrasted each construct in an identical nomological network. Although we found support for both theories, the entrepreneurial orientation construct was more robust in explaining additional variance in growth. Additionally, our findings suggest that the means through which the first-order dimensions are operationalized—latent vs. summates— significantly affect the analysis

Non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy, sudden death and implantable defibrillators: a review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Objective: The recent Danish Study to Assess the Efficacy of ICDs in Patients with Non-ischemic Systolic Heart Failure on Mortality (DANISH) trial suggested that implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) do not reduce overall mortality in patients with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy (NICM), despite reducing sudden cardiac death. We performed an updated meta-analysis to examine the impact of ICD therapy on mortality in NICM patients. Methods: A systematic search for studies that examined the effect of ICDs on outcomes in NICM was performed. Our analysis compared patients randomised to an ICD with those randomised to no ICD, and examined the endpoint of overall mortality. Results: Six primary prevention trials and two secondary prevention trials were identified that met the pre-specified search criteria. Using a fixed-effects model, analysis of primary prevention trials revealed a reduction in overall mortality with ICD therapy (RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.65 to 0.91). Conclusions: Although our updated meta-analysis demonstrates a survival benefit of ICD therapy, the effect is substantively weakened by the inclusion of the DANISH trial—which is both the largest and most recent of the analysed trials—indicating that the residual pooled benefit of ICDs may reflect the risk of sudden death in older trials which included patients treated sub-optimally by contemporary standards. As such, these data must be interpreted cautiously. The results of the DANISH trial emphasise that there is no ‘one size fits all’ indication for primary prevention ICDs in NICM patients, and clinicians must consider age and comorbidity on an individual basis when determining whether a defibrillator is appropriate

An Anniversary Best Uncelebrated: The 75th Year of the Presidential Succession Act of 1947

    Get PDF
On July 18, 1947, President Harry Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act into law. The 1947 Act placed the Speaker of the House and the Senate president pro tempore in the presidential line of succession. Seventy-five years later, the statute needs major revision. Although the 1947 Act has not been used, the nation’s good fortune may change at any moment, especially given ever-present threats to the health and safety of the president and vice president. This Article argues that Congress should revise the 1947 law in several ways, most notably by making Cabinet secretaries, in most circumstances, the immediate successors to the presidency after the vice president

Amesbury Early College Program: Second-Year Outcomes

    Get PDF
This program involves creating five-year longitudinal community-based program evaluation reports annually based on outcomes for early college program for academically average students in grades 10-12, in a suburban high school partnership with MA community college. The Mixed methodology employed uses surveys and interviews and quantitative student data to illuminate program design, measure student outcomes, investigate changes in teaching practice and examine effective leadership practices. The two-year results show impressive credit accumulation and improved college readiness skills in students. It also shows that strong support mechanisms promote student success. This Program is now being replicated in other communities

Project-Based Learning Approach in Teaching Information and Communications Technology

    Get PDF
The idea of outcomes-based education shifts educators from content-deliverer to project manager, facilitating the investigation of learning approaches and focusing on deeper learning to develop students’ essential skills for their career readiness. This study established the effectiveness of the project-based learning (PBL) approach in teaching topics on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) among selected students of three programs at President Ramon Magsaysay State University (PRMSU), Iba, Zambales during 2nd semester SY 2018-2019. The study employed a descriptive research method to describe and interpret the present condition and relate to the desired objectives. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in analyzing data gathered. The study findings conclude that student-respondents had a “Fair” level of performance in ICT topics during the pre-test while “Very Good” after using the PBL approach; the PBL approach was effectively based on the result analysis of mean, frequency counts, standard deviation, and t-test computation. The variance test analysis revealed a significant improvement in students’ performance on ICT topics, as reflected in the post-test result. Recommendations are provided

Successes and Challenges of Being Interim Leaders During a Pandemic

    Get PDF
Background Assuming an interim leadership role presents personal opportunities for professional growth and organizational challenges. These challenges may stem from the temporary nature of the position and a lack of clear direction or decision-making authority. External forces, in this case the COVID-19 pandemic, also contribute to interim leaders\u27 challenges. Library administration at a large public research university with multiple interim positions worked to identify potential challenges and possible solutions for those designated to interim leadership roles. Description This session will describe a plan created to facilitate the transition into and out of interim positions, set expectations for these roles, and ensure clear communication across interim positions at all levels of the organization. The session will be from the perspective of two librarians designated to co-lead a department over a period of 13 months. The department consisted of six librarians with liaison responsibilities, a staff member, a library intern (hourly staff), and a student worker . Emphasis will be placed on describing the challenges of supervising and motivating the department during a time of transition and uncertainty. There will also be a discussion on how continuing responsibilities were prioritized/balanced with interim leadership responsibilities. This was a critical consideration when creating the reporting and responsibility structure. Conclusions The plan related to interim leadership was a success and provided both interim department heads with an opportunity to grow professionally. As a result, both interim leaders transitioned smoothly back into their roles within the department while making a meaningful contribution to the department\u27s direction. During the period of interim leadership, there were two notable accomplishments. A five-year plan tool/program was created to mentor those in the department regarding their professional growth. In addition, a mission statement was created that gave the members of the department a clear idea of the purpose of the work of the department
