State-space model identification and feedback control of unsteady aerodynamic forces
Unsteady aerodynamic models are necessary to accurately simulate forces and
develop feedback controllers for wings in agile motion; however, these models
are often high dimensional or incompatible with modern control techniques.
Recently, reduced-order unsteady aerodynamic models have been developed for a
pitching and plunging airfoil by linearizing the discretized Navier-Stokes
equation with lift-force output. In this work, we extend these reduced-order
models to include multiple inputs (pitch, plunge, and surge) and explicit
parameterization by the pitch-axis location, inspired by Theodorsen's model.
Next, we investigate the na\"{\i}ve application of system identification
techniques to input--output data and the resulting pitfalls, such as unstable
or inaccurate models. Finally, robust feedback controllers are constructed
based on these low-dimensional state-space models for simulations of a rigid
flat plate at Reynolds number 100. Various controllers are implemented for
models linearized at base angles of attack , and . The resulting control laws are
able to track an aggressive reference lift trajectory while attenuating sensor
noise and compensating for strong nonlinearities.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figure
Characterizing and correcting for the effect of sensor noise in the dynamic mode decomposition
Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) provides a practical means of extracting
insightful dynamical information from fluids datasets. Like any data processing
technique, DMD's usefulness is limited by its ability to extract real and
accurate dynamical features from noise-corrupted data. Here we show
analytically that DMD is biased to sensor noise, and quantify how this bias
depends on the size and noise level of the data. We present three modifications
to DMD that can be used to remove this bias: (i) a direct correction of the
identified bias using known noise properties, (ii) combining the results of
performing DMD forwards and backwards in time, and (iii) a total
least-squares-inspired algorithm. We discuss the relative merits of each
algorithm, and demonstrate the performance of these modifications on a range of
synthetic, numerical, and experimental datasets. We further compare our

Blended e-learning skeleton of conversation: improving formative assessment in undergraduate dissertation supervision
The supervision of undergraduate student dissertations is an area in need of research. Although some studies have already addressed this, these are primarily based on academic staff responses. This study contributes to knowledge by gathering the responses of students and focusing on formative electronic assessment. Data was collected using a student focus group and student questionnaire. The findings suggest that good supervisor-student communication is crucial to the supervision process and a number of students felt unhappy with this aspect. It is suggested that to improve the undergraduate student dissertation experience, a combination of face-to-face and electronic formative assessment is used. In addition, the Blended E-learning Skeleton of Conversation model provides a sound theoretical framework that could guide supervisors and students in the supervision process. This model is advocated for use in dissertation module design and in supervisor development
Ex vivo expansion of immature 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide-resistant progenitor cells from G-CSF-mobilized peripheral blood
AbstractThe application of ex vivo expansion to cell products pharmacologically purged in vitro may provide sufficient numbers of cells for rapid engraftment in a product with reduced tumor burden. To pursue this possibility we evaluated the effect of 4-hydroperoxycyclophosphamide (4-HC) treatment on granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized peripheral blood stem cells (G-PBSC) and their subsequent expansion potential. A small number of G-PBSC CD34+ cells are resistant to 4-HC and are phenotypically and functionally immature. 4-HC-resistant G-PBSC cells are CD34+ bright, CD38+/-, DR(lo), CD13(lo), CD33-, CD71-, and rhodamine dull. In six experiments, treating G-PBSC with 60 microg/mL of 4-HC at 37 degrees C for 30 minutes reduced the number of colony-forming units (CFUs) per 5000 CD34+ cells by 96.3% (from 1333 +/- 137 to 46.5 +/- 11). This purging also reduced the frequency of 5-week long-term culture initiating cells (LTC-ICs) from 1/39 (range 1/27 to 1/62) to <1/1680 (range 1/1180 to 1/2420). Ex vivo expansion cultures were used to compare the proliferative potential of treated and untreated CD34+ cells. These cells were cultured with either the HS-5 stromal cell line serum-deprived conditioned media supplemented with 10 ng/mL kit ligand (HS-5CM/KL) or a recombinant growth factor mix (GFmix) containing 10 ng/mL each of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-3, IL-6, KL, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, and 3 U/mL of erythropoietin. Culturing untreated CD34+ G-PBSC with 10% HS-5CM/KL increased total nucleated cells by 460-fold after 15 days. Progenitors, which were measured as CFUs, also increased by 47-fold over the same period. More significantly, culturing the 4-HC-treated CD34+ cells with HS-5/KL increased CFUs 98-fold and the nucleated cells increased 4573-fold. The absolute number of CFUs present after expansion of the 4-HC-resistant cells with HS-5CM/KL was threefold higher than that detected before purging and significantly higher than that obtained with GFmix. These data indicate that G-PBSC contain a very immature pool of cells not detectable using the 5-week LTC-IC assay, but have extremely high proliferative potential. Additionally, pharmacological purging of G-PBSC greatly reduces mature cells while retaining an immature population. Also significant is the finding that supernatant from the HS-5 bone marrow stromal cell line plus KL can fully regenerate progenitors from the 4-HC-resistant CD34+ G-PBSC.Biol Blood Marrow Transplant 1998;4(2):61-8

Future eDestination Marketing: Perspective of an Australian Tourism Stakeholder Network.
Tourism destinations are difficult to manage because of the complex relationships of their diverse public and private stakeholders. At the same time, strategic marketing efforts are important for destinations to foster positive consequences of tourism, particularly given the range of opportunities and challenges created by the emergence of social media that destinations can use advantageously. This article aims to explore future eDestination marketing from Australian tourism stakeholder network perspectives. Workshops were convened in July 2012 in Melbourne, Australia, for select stakeholders invited to contribute to the futures national tourism technology strategy. They presented a stakeholder network approach to futures strategy development that aims to contribute to that used in recent national tourism plans and strategies for Australia developed by the government. From Exploration of Classism to Anticlassist Counseling: Implications for Counselors and Counselor Educators
Classism is a recently studied, but historically present, form of oppression. Despite much attention to inclusion of underrepresented clients in counseling literature, there has been little focus on the presence of classism in academic settings. In an effort to close this gap, a study of 202 individuals, aged 18 to 38, was conducted to explore the relationships among perceived classism, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Only 4.5% of the participants had never experienced any incidents of classism. African American individuals were more likely to experience interpersonal classism and working class/poor individuals were more likely to experience interpersonal and systemic classism. Recommendations for counselors, specifically, college counselors working with young adult students, facing classism are also discussed
